The group was founded in 1979 by Bernardo Bonezzi (Madrid, 1964-2012 ), who even before the age of fourteen had led a band called Morbus Acre and formed part of the seminal group of the Madrid scene Kaka de Luxe. The Zombies pooled influences of glam rock (Lou Reed, David Bowie, Brian Eno ) and new wave (Talking Heads, B- 52's ). They signed to RCA , who released the group's first single, the catchy "Groenland", a song that still remains among the best-known Spanish pop songs of the 80, and is present in numerous compilations of music from the decade.
Encouraged by the success of the single, they recorded their first album, 'Extraños juegos', one of the most successful pop albums of the 80s. However, following the release of the second LP, 'La muralla china', Bonezzi decided to leave the group in 1982 to pursue other projects.

Can't let us be
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But talk don't bother me
People talk about breaking off
Scatter up my name
Sticks and stones may break my bones
I've been abused
In my home
I've been abused
I've been abused right from the start
People talk about breaking off
Can't let us be
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But talk don't bother me
Oh, oh, oh
I've been abused
Out of my home
I've been abused
I've been abused right from the start
People talk about breaking off
Can't let us be
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But talk don't bother me
Oh, oh, oh
I've been abused
In my home
I've been abused
I've been abused right from the start
People talk about breaking off
Can't let us be
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But talk don't bother me
The song "Sticks and Stones" by Zombies talks about facing verbal abuse and harassment from people. The lyrics suggest that people might try to defame or break the singer's spirit, but they are determined to soldier on and not let negative words affect them. The lines "People talk about breaking off, Can't let us be" show the singer's refusal to be deterred by gossips or hearsays. The singer acknowledges that "Sticks and stones may break my bones, But talk don't bother me," indicating that they are aware of the power words have, but are choosing not to allow themselves to be weakened by them.
The song also hints at past physical abuse, perhaps from an abusive family member, with the line "I've been abused in my home." The phrase suggests a history of trauma that could still be haunting the singer. The song's title refers to the old adage, 'sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never harm me,' often used as a mantra for people facing verbal abuse.
Overall, the song is about resilience and strength in the face of negative words and past traumas. The singer is declaring that they won't let anyone break them, and is determined to stand tall despite the negativity.

Takes balls to tackle a Ray Charles classic the way the Zombies do here. Not better but a bold interpretation rather than a simple copy.

I always thought this drum beat sounds a bit odd. I can't wrap my head around if it is a little shuffle feel to it or if it's juts the accsenting of the hi-hat that makes it a bit swingy. It' great either way!
