The group was founded in 1979 by Bernardo Bonezzi (Madrid, 1964-2012 ), who even before the age of fourteen had led a band called Morbus Acre and formed part of the seminal group of the Madrid scene Kaka de Luxe. The Zombies pooled influences of glam rock (Lou Reed, David Bowie, Brian Eno ) and new wave (Talking Heads, B- 52's ). They signed to RCA , who released the group's first single, the catchy "Groenland", a song that still remains among the best-known Spanish pop songs of the 80, and is present in numerous compilations of music from the decade.
Encouraged by the success of the single, they recorded their first album, 'Extraños juegos', one of the most successful pop albums of the 80s. However, following the release of the second LP, 'La muralla china', Bonezzi decided to leave the group in 1982 to pursue other projects.

The bees are jumping and the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich and your mama's good looking
Would you hush, pretty baby, don't you cry
One of these mornings you're going to wake up singing
There you're going to spread wings and take to the sky
But till that morning ain't nothing, nothing going to harm you
It's summertime and the living is easy
The bees are jumping and the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich and your mama's good looking
Would you hush, pretty baby, don't you cry
The opening verse of The Zombies’ song “Summertime” is a classic. The song's lyrics convey a sense of summer ease and relaxedness. The first two lines indicate the abundance of nature during the summer season. The phrase “the cotton is high” is a reference to the high cotton fields, which are at the peak of their growth in the summertime. The next two lines take on a more light-hearted and playful tone. The lyrics refer to someone’s privileged and attractive birthright, the words "Your daddy's rich and your mama's good looking." The final line of the verse, “Would you hush, pretty baby, don’t you cry?” could be seen as a nod to the carefree feeling of summer that is being described in the song.
In the second verse of “Summertime,” The Zombies delve into a somewhat more emotional space. The words “One of these mornings you’re going to wake up singing, there you’re going to spread your wings and take to the sky” are uplifting and aspirational. It indicates a future filled with unlimited possibilities. The next two lines make it clear that the song’s protagonist is being looked after by loving and protective parents, who ensure that nothing would hurt them until they’re ready to fly on their own.
Overall, “Summertime” by The Zombies, whose slow and melancholic style became characteristic of their music, talks about the unbridled freedom of youth. The song's evocative lyrics and nostalgic sound seem to be entrenched in a longing for a time gone by, with a gentle reminder of unfulfilled dreams that one day could reach the sky.
