I Don
Zoot Sims Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I need your love so badly, I love you, oh, so madly
But I don't stand a ghost of a chance with you!
I thought at last I'd found you, but other lovers surround you
And "I don't stand a ghost of a chance with you!"
If you'd surrender just for a tender kiss or two
You might discover, that I'm the lover meant for you
And I'd be true, but what's the good of scheming
I know I must be dreaming

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Ghost of a Chance" by Zoot Sims express unrequited love as the singer laments his inability to win the heart of the one he loves. The opening lines state the singer's deep love and desire for the object of his affection, but he quickly acknowledges the futility of his pursuit, declaring he doesn't stand a ghost of a chance with her. The singer had hoped to find love with this person, but discovers that she's already surrounded by other lovers, and he knows it's unlikely that he will ever have a chance with her.

The singer continues to plead his case, fantasizing about a moment of surrender between the two where he could steal a tender kiss or two, in hopes that she would discover he is the lover meant for her. However, he knows that he is likely just dreaming and allowing himself to scheme fruitlessly. The lyrics to "Ghost of a Chance" are a poignant portrayal of unrequited love and the feeling of being powerless in the face of desire.

Despite a hopelessly out of tune piano this is a stunning performance by all the players. Sims and Broomeyer were among the best of their time and play beautifully here.  Pianist John Williams gave up playing Jazz and went into banking too soon to be very widely recognized for his talent, but he makes a gallant showing here as he wrestles that terrible instrument almost into submission.
