The band got its first big break in the BRU Rock Hunt, an annual Battle of the Bands run by Providence commercial alternative/indie rock station 95.5 WBRU.
They have an uncanny ability to blend rock - from new wave to progressive - with ska, punk balladry, and a bit of baroque into something highly original. Miller's direct and personal songwriting derives from an unquestionable pop sensibility, while the band's sophisticated arrangements and intricate instrumentals give their songs an expansive and psychedelic edge. The band further distinguishes itself by using the electric violin as a lead instrument. Described by The Village Voice as "a cross between Eddie Van Halen and Papa John Creach," violinist Spencer Swain adds swirling textures and searing melodies that range from the pretty to the profane.
Members of the band include Eli Miller (Vocals/Guitar), John Zox (Drums/Percussion), Spencer Swain (Violin/Vocals), and Dan Edinberg (Bass/Vocals/Keys). Former members include Eli Batalion.
Currently, the band has produced three albums: Take Me Home which was released by Armo Records in 2003, The Wait which was released by SideOneDummy Records in 2006 and Line in the Sand which was released by SideOneDummy Records in 2008. The band quietly disbanded in 2009, reuniting for concerts at Lupo's in their hometown of Providence in August 2011 and October 2014.
Don't Believe in Love
Zox Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like lovers on a sinking ship
We float in the yard all night
And when the light hit the window
You said I made you feel safe
I wanted to cry
I know what you want from me
Must me something wrong with me
I don't believe in love
I don't believe in love
We drove into town
Just to have something to do
And drank till I knew you'd drive me home
You caught my eye in the mirror and said
Happiness is a place like this
I wanted to cry
I know what you want from me
Baby I am trying to believe
Must me something wrong with me
I don't believe in love
I don't believe in love
In Zox's "Don't Believe in Love," the lyrics describe a relationship that is fragile and unstable, with the singer struggling to believe in love. The first verse sets the scene with the couple being the "last ones awake," and compares their situation to "lovers on a sinking ship." Despite this, they choose to spend the night outside, floating in a yard. When the sun rises and the light hits the window, the singer's partner says that they feel safe with them, which makes the singer want to cry. This could suggest that the singer feels overwhelmed and unsure of how to handle their partner's vulnerability, or that they have trouble expressing their emotions.
In the second verse, the couple drives into town to find something to do, and ends up drinking until the singer is too intoxicated to drive. In the rearview mirror, the singer's partner catches their eye and says that happiness is being in that moment. Once again, the singer is moved to tears. However, throughout the song, the singer admits that they do not believe in love and feel that there is something wrong with them. They are conflicted between their desire to love and be loved, and their belief that love is not worth pursuing.
