Say My Name
Zyra ODESZA Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wanna go so what'd you say
When you gonna let me know
If you give a damn about me
'Cause you got my hands tied
In my defense I always fall for confidence
And your compliments look good on me

'Cause nobody knows it better
Than the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter
And while you're watching
You may think that she doesn't matter
But no one knows you better, oh yeah

I wanna dance, I wanna dance with you
So take a chance, take a chance, oh yeah
I wanna dance, I wanna dance with you
So take a chance, take a chance, oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah

I need a sign or a signal
I've overthought everything I can think of into symbol
I need the coat and your jacket
And the remnants of your cigarette packet

I wanna go so what'd you say
When you gonna let me know
If you give a damn about me
'Cause you got my hands tied
In my defense I always fall for confidence
And your compliments look good on me

'Cause nobody knows it better
Than the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter
And while you're watching
You may think that she doesn't matter
But no one knows you better

I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance with you
So take a chance, take a chance, oh yeah
I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance with you
I wanna dance, I wanna dance, oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah

Oh yeah
Oh yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to ODESZA's "Say My Name" are about the desire for a deeper connection with someone. The singer wants to know if the person they are interested in cares about them or if they are just playing games, as they feel trapped and helpless in the situation. Despite this, they are drawn to the person's confidence and compliments which make them feel good.

The chorus emphasizes the theme of feeling invisible and judged by others. The mention of "the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter" alludes to Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of the same name, in which the singer is shamed and ostracized by her community. The singer compares themselves to this character, feeling like an outsider despite being in the same room as the person they desire. The second half of the chorus flips the script by suggesting that, despite their outer façade, they understand the person better than anyone else does.

The second verse continues the theme of needing a sign or indication that the person truly cares. The singer has analyzed every symbol and gesture and wants something tangible to prove that their feelings are returned. The mention of the coat and cigarette packet is possibly a reference to a specific memory or moment shared between the two.

Overall, "Say My Name" is a song about the desperation for validation and connection in a potentially one-sided relationship.

This song is like a strange mixture of nostalgia, sad times, happy memories, and good vibes. It's hard to describe, but I'm sure y'all get it.

Went ODESZA's concert in last summer with my "crush" (was way more than just crush). The first song they played was this. Still remember the awesome performance they've showed that night. I really felt alive when I was there. Unfortunately the relationship didn't go well, we are separated like nothing happened. But every time I play this, It reminds me that magical night. That melancholic emotions..
