Innocence
noredirectBjork Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I once had no fears
None at all
And then when
I had some

To my surprise
I grew to like both
Scared or brave
Without them

The thrill of fear
Thought I'd never admit it
The thrill of fear
Now greatly enjoyed with courage

When I once was
Untouchable
Innocence roared
Still amazes

When I once was
Innocent
It's still here
But in different places

Neurosis
Only
Attaches
Itself to
Fertile
Ground
Where it can flourish

The thrill of fear
Thought I'd never admit it
The thrill of fear
Now greatly enjoyed with courage

When I once was
Fearless
Innocence roared
Still amazes

Untouchable
Innocence
It's still here
But in different places

Fear is a powerful drug
Overcome it and
You think that you can do
Anything

Should I
Save myself
For later
Or generously give

Fear of
Losing
Energy
Is draining

It locks up your chest
Shuts down the heart
Miserly
And stingy
Let's open up, share

When I once was
Fearless
Innocence roared
Still amazes

Untouchable
Innocence

It's still here
But in different places

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Innocence" by Bjork encapsulate the exploration of the relationship between fear and bravery, and their coexistence in one's life. The song begins with Bjork recalling a time in her life when she had no fears, but as she encountered fearful situations, she became accustomed to both being afraid and being fearless. She reveals how the thrill of fear has become something she enjoys, especially when coupled with courage.

The song then delves into the idea that neurosis attaches itself to fertile ground where it can flourish, highlighting the importance of being brave in order to avoid being consumed by fear. Bjork emphasizes how fear can lock up one's chest and shut down their heart, leading to a drain on their energy. However, once fear is overcome, the potential to believe in oneself and do anything is realized.

Throughout "Innocence," Bjork reflects on her past innocence and how it has shifted and transposed into various aspects of her life in different ways. Ultimately, the song is an introspective meditation on growing up, facing fears, and the inevitable changes that come along with that.

Teenagers can learn a lot about this series. Mother's love is irreplaceable and unconditional ♥️🥺 I miss my mom in heaven 😔

@LiveLoveLaugh102310

I agree hence her mom is also part of the problem, I think. Her husband ridiculed and humiliated her in front of their kids their entire marriage and she took it, allowed it even. Hence why Ela is partly the way that she is, it afffected her psychology regarding relationships.
