Take On Me
a‐ha Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're talking away
I don't know what
I'm to say I'll say it anyway
Today's another day to find you
Shying away
I'll be coming for your love, okay?

Take on me, (take on me)
Take me on, (take on me)
I'll be gone
In a day or two

So needless to say
I'm odds and ends
I'll be stumbling away
Slowly learning that life is OK
Say after me
It's no better to be safe than sorry

Take on me, (take on me)
Take me on, (take on me)
I'll be gone
In a day or two

Oh the things that you say
Is it live or
Just to play my worries away
You're all the things I've got to remember
You're shying away
I'll be coming for you anyway

Take on me, (take on me)
Take me on, (take on me)
I'll be gone
In a day

(Take on me, take on me)
(Take me on, take on me)
I'll be gone (take on me)
In a day (take me on, take on me)
(Take on me, take on me)

(Take me on, take on me)
(Take on me)

Overall Meaning

The song "Take on Me" by a-ha is about two people who are attracted to each other but are struggling to connect. The first verse starts with the couple talking and the singer confessing that they don't know what to say, but they're going to speak anyway. The chorus then comes in: "Take on me" and "take me on" essentially means that the singer wants the person they're talking to (presumably a love interest) to take them on as a partner. They promise that they'll be gone in a day or two, which could suggest that the singer is a transient figure and won't be around for long.

The second verse reiterates the ambiguity in the couple's relationship. The singer thinks they're "odds and ends" and "stumbling away" but will try to come back for their love interest anyway. They then say "Say after me/ It's no better to be safe than sorry," which could suggest that they want their love interest to take a risk and give their relationship a chance. The chorus repeats with a bridge that references the things love interests say to placate the singer. At the end, the chorus repeats with "I'll be gone in a day" and a final "Take on me."

UNBELIEVABLE - he is not only hitting the high notes, he's singing in the exact same key as in 1985. Most singers drop the key lower and lower over the years and even then they have trouble.

Back when singers could sing without a computer software. Still rocking after 35 years of the original release!

I remember this video blowing my mind when I was a teenager in the 80s . What a great time to grow up. After all these years things change but the music keeps us young. This mans voice is still amazing wow really takes me back wish I could stay there.

JAYMES2568

Take on me was released as a single three times and only became a hit when it was combined with ‘that video’!!
