Somebody To Love
airplane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the truth is found to be lies
And all the joy within you dies
Don't you want somebody to love
Don't you need somebody to love
Wouldn't you love somebody to love
You better find somebody to love
Love, love
When the garden flowers, baby are dead, yes and
Your mind, your mind is so full of red
Don't you want somebody to love
Don't you need somebody to love
Wouldn't you love somebody to love
You better find somebody to love

Your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his
Yeah, but in your head, baby
I'm afraid you don't know where it is
Don't you want somebody to love
Don't you need somebody to love
Wouldn't you love somebody to love
You better find somebody to love

Tears are running down
They're all running down your breast
And your friends, baby
They treat you like a guest
Don't you want somebody to love
Don't you need somebody to love

Wouldn't you love somebody to love
You better find somebody to love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Somebody To Love" by Jefferson Airplane speak to the universal human desire for love, companionship, and understanding. The song is a call for those who have lost faith in relationships, those who are disillusioned and feel alone, to find someone to love. The first stanza indicates the realization that everything one believed to be true has turned out to be false, leading to a feeling of emptiness and a need for love. The repetition of "Don't you want somebody to love? Don't you need somebody to love?" emphasizes the urgency and necessity of finding love.

The second stanza uses the metaphor of a dead garden to depict the state of the singer's mind. The color red, symbolizing passion and intensity, is overwhelming and potentially dangerous. This connects with the idea that love can be all-consuming, transforming, and even destructive in its power. The theme of searching for a connection is prominent in this section as well, with repeated use of the phrase "you better find somebody to love".

The third stanza considers the idea that the singer's eyes may resemble someone else's, but his/her mind and heart are not in line with this person. The idea of misunderstanding and being misunderstood is again present, with the singer having a sense of fear and uncertainty as to where his/her emotions and thoughts lie. Finally, the last stanza speaks to the isolation and loneliness felt by the singer, even among friends. This suggests that true love is the only remedy for this feeling of being an outsider.

Overall, "Somebody To Love" communicates the need for human connection and the transformative power of love. It is a reminder of the importance of finding someone to love and to be loved by, a universal message that continues to resonate with listeners around the world.

I swear, Grace's voice could bend steel. The psychedelic album of the 60's !

Ya think!? THE most powerful female voice in the rock era by far. She had no equal. When Grace Slick hit the scene folks weren't quite ready for it, and I think that was the appeal. The sheer power of Slick's delivery was a force to be reckoned with. Follows her personality too. Unafraid, unafraid of laughing at herself as well as the Establishment. She was a partyer and probably the life of the party. Almost didn't need drugs when you were around Grace Slick.

What a folk band does when they get bored. Very early psychedelia; recorded Nov., '66

I like Grace. She started a riot at West German concert by taunting the fans. On alcohol, drugs no doubt.
