Dreaming
andrew Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was singing with the choir on the train
I was a traveling man, I did not yet have a name
I was a 1960's movie, I was a one-night love story
I was a "you'll never see me again"

I was moving too fast to see
All the paintings in Paris or the sunrise in Barcelona
I was too broke, too shallow to dive deep
Too busy carrying the weight of everything

Young with nowhere to be
But you can't get far for free
This ain't no rookie dreaming
This ain't no rookie dreaming

I was on the hunt for visions out of reach
All those daydreaming mornings
All the wishful goodnight thinking
I have steered through every dark alley
In hopes of a light at the end I could see

Young with nowhere to be
But you can't get far for free
This ain't no rookie dreaming
This ain't no rookie dreaming

I am sitting all alone on this train
I am a passenger to somewhere, I do not yet know the name

I am a 1960's movie, I am an unwritten story
I am a "when will I see you again?"

Overall Meaning

In "Dreaming," Andrew sings about being a traveler who is still searching for his identity. He describes himself as a part of a choir singing on the train, but he still doesn't have a name. In addition to his anonymous status, he identifies as a "1960s movie," a romantic story that only lasts for one night. He seems to be living in a fleeting moment that could end at any time, and he's aware that he may never find himself again.

Andrew is always busy moving, but he admits that he's moving so rapidly that he's missing some of life's most beautiful moments, such as the paintings in Paris and the sunrise in Barcelona. He's preoccupied with carrying the weight of his responsibilities, and he's too broke and shallow to dive deeper into himself. He acknowledges that he's young and free, but he can't go anywhere without paying the price.

Although he's aware of his free spirit, Andrew doesn't consider himself a beginner when it comes to dreaming. He notes that he's been on the search for dreams that haven't yet materialized, and he's spent time wandering through alleyways in search of a light. However, he emphasizes that this search isn't easy, and he's not dreaming like a rookie would.

In the final section of the song, Andrew reflects on his current position. He finds himself sitting alone on the train as a passenger headed for an unknown destination. He views himself as an unwritten story, a remnant of a past romance that could start anew. Overall, the song portrays the confusion and beauty of young, independent dreamers who are trying to find their footing in the world.
