I'm just scratching the hell out of my head regarding the bandog's purpose here. APTB-type gameness in a larger dog to me doesn't make sense for protection work.

I think I get the bit about the claim that the original bulldog was a catch dog which he equates with the idea of catching/holding intruders, and that Stratton himself also believes the APBT is in fact the original bulldog. While in category the APBT is a catch dog or gripper, a catch dog really has differerent performance requirements than a dogfighting dog, a catch dog that's doing it's job in the case of bull-baiting is gripping/holding in place, which is what the original bull-baiting bulldog was bred for. It's not employing much of a prey drive, which is required for dogfighting.

In this context bull-baiting isn't fighting, it's submission. The APBT is bred to do something quite different to the bull-baiter, to go past holding and include a prey drive to maim and kill through hold and shake. How can they be the same dogs when obviously breeders will be selectively breeding for those differing performance requirements?

As bull-baiting went illegal they looked to pit rating and dogfighting. To me the idea of the terrier being mixed in with original bulldog to eventually create the APBT makes sense on a lot more levels than the APBT being the original bulldog. And the artwork of the original bulldog I've seen clearly has a different more "bulldog" bracyophalic muzzle than the APBT.

He seeems to imply the mastiff isn't "game"/driven enough for protection work. The English mastiff was bred as a large game catch dog hound. An English mastiff can do exactly what he's looking for, grip the intruder, take him to ground and just hold him there perfectly without going any further until the owner tells it to release, which will be when the owner has organized something besides the dog for the intruder. The English mastiff will also do active blocking of suspect people.

It sounds like we're trying to create a solution for something that's already been solved. Pure mastiff and existing protection dog breeds will be far better for protection work than something with APBT gameness.

As for stranger aloofness, there are already large breeds that have been bred for centuries for aloofness with strangers, and such dogs have more than enough drive to catch intruders. We're trying to reinvent the wheel here, but not only that, trying to use the wrong wheel-making materials and then transmute those wrong materials into the right materials when the right material already exist.

I like the bandog, but to me what we're creating here with selecting for APBT gameness plus stranger aloofness is a courageous high prey-drive "fighter" that's dangerous to the public and is more prone to murdering instead of catching/holding intruders than a dedicated protection dog. Existing protection dogs are already loyal and will die to protection their family without the APBT drive/gameness. Maybe there're more aspects to the program I'm not aware of, but that's what I got out of how things were explained in this interview.

Mighty fine video. I was recommended this yesterday. I watched two videos interviewing Mr. Robinson about nine months ago, but I had no idea that this fellow was interviewed again. He has some of the finest bandogs I have ever seen. I wish dogs like these got more attention than dogs like the Hulk from Dark Dynasty K9s. No disrespect to the breeder of Hulk, but how big you can make a dog is not what folks should be focusing on when creating a dog. It is much more about performance. I see he mentioned the origin of the pit bull here. Robinson has the admittedly more mainstream theory that pit bulls are a mix of terrier and the old bull baiting bulldog and challenges the theory of Mr. Stratton that they are the original bull baiting bulldog. To be honest, I do not believe anyone knows for complete certain the history nor does it really matter at the end of the day. That being said, with absolutely no disrespect to the knowledgeable Mr. Robinson, I would be more likely to side with someone that has been involved strictly with the pit bull breed for decades over someone that specializes in another breed that utilizes the pit bull blood to add to their dogs when it comes to information on pit bulls. I would imagine that, just like with the greyhound, a lot of time went into the traits. I would imagine that the gameness of the pit bull that is not seen in any other dog to the same level or degree probably took more than 150 years. It would make sense that they would have had a head start in catch work and fighting bulls. I know Robison mentions the smaller size of some pit bulls also, but pit bulls can and have ranged in size. Some are around 30 lbs, while others can be around 70 lbs. It is possible that folks started breeding the bulldog down in size a bit when dog fighting started, because size was less of a factor when the opponents will always be the same size. It also sounds like the original bulldogs were not all that large as some folks would think.
Another historian that is pretty learned in pit bulls is Diane Jessup. As she has said, "The dog called 'English bulldog' today is a show bred animal developed well AFTER baiting was banned. Dogs with the bracycephalic nose and short, wide, deformed body of the show bulldog never were typical of animals used for bullbaiting. Rather, the true bull-dog was a 40 to 65 pound dog, long of leg, with a strong, medium, working muzzle, and a long, thin tapering tail. The watercolor above is by Thomas Rowlandson [1756-1827], who sketched scenes of English life, and often drew butchers, baiters, dog fighters and their dogs. The above is entitled The Bull Bait and shows the riff raff typical of baiting sports and their bull-dogs; identical to today's American pit bull."

In regards to Hulk that dog isn’t considered a Bandog. Hulk is registered as a working Pit Bulldog. Some new thing to discern between the Bandog ( an unregistered type ), a American Bully XXl , American PitBull Terriers and the Pit Bulldog.

I love Lee's YouTube channel but I have to point out that every one of those dogs is working exclusively in prey drive and playing a tug game. There is no displays of any true defensive drive in his dogs... You can also see that most of these dogs are sleeve happy

Very true. Protection dogs need a variety of training scenarios to prevent equipment bias. Maybe he does that, but I haven't seen any videos but sleeve work.

Finally someone knows the true gospel of a bandog. Long before the age of the internet I imported a Tosa Inu. People did not know what it was, period. People are to young to even know about the Coby bloodline from years past. Now due to the internet its all about colors, and how many shows it won. I listen to breeders and I can tell they don't know crap about crap because all they're selling is crap. It all about colors, how many shows it won then they wonder how someone broke into their backyard and stole the dog (PERIOD).

It's not about reinventing the wheel It's more about fixing it. Most people breed from show dog stock not working dog stock. You have some good points but show dogs have taken over right along unethical breeders.

The whole "game bred bandog" schtick that Robinson pushes is all just marketing that I hope people aren't getting hooked by. His dogs look like solid protection dogs, but they don't look much better than many other bandog/protection dog breeders out there. There are plenty of other dogs out there that can withstand tons of stress and punishment and still hold a bite, and he doesn't even define how a "game-bred bandog" would even act. You wouldn't even want a truly dead-game protection dog that you have to choke unconscious to get off a bite every time. Lee's dogs look great, but a lot of what he sells is all marketing hype, which is why he is able to sell his dogs at the ridiculous prices he charges.

It depends on what kind of mass if you get the Cane Corso have all the traits that you are speaking of the agility traits of knowing it's family and being very worried of strangers and unafraid to attack I will not want my dog to walk on when it attacks ones have very powerful powerful jaws not locking them but getting bone protection bite at their bite when attacking the thing about a Cane Corso it could be 140 lb and have the agility of a panther

How exactly is a dog game bred if it’s not a game dog ( fighting dog ) with game pedigree. Gameness is the dog willingness to give its all without. Quitting despite the amount of pain/suffering it’s enduring. Gameness is is pure drive, pure focus to the elimination of another dog.
Game dogs should never be used as family protection dogs. They are too hot blooded, easy to invoke and nice far to often to nice to strangers.
Hunting dogs and guardian breeds are game dog they are simply dogs with drive which is not the same as be game.

None of my APBT were good guard dogs... All my pits LOVED people and would probably help a burglar carry out our valuables.... But God help them if they attacked our family... That being said I've NEVER used my dogs as guardor protection dogs, that's my job and I can guarantee you, me and my equipment are much more effective then any dog, to protect my home and family.

@Battle Bred K9s how big is he trying to go? Seems like large Scott bulldog and Apbt mix would work well. Isn't a mastiff historically for roaming large areas in packs and putting down threats. Very independent thinking.
Also one of the best traits about pits is they can be handled while working. Purposely people friendly. I'm interested to see what he comes up with.

My grandfather bred game bred German short-haired pointers and rabbit dogs , hot blood, cold blood, Salukis crosses. Now his definition of dead game described the dogs willingness to hunt and die doing it. Run a rabbit for 7 minutes at full speed and as long as he can see it he's chasing and same with pointers point and flush from sun up to sun down never ever laying down and refusing to hunt.

I have much respect for Lee Robinson, but in the world of guard/protection dogs, this is a solved problem. You can rattle off a 1/2 dozen breeds off the top of your head that can do everything he’s aiming for with his ‘game bandogs’. Rottweiler, Presa Canario, Boerboel, Doberman, Cane Corso, Akita, and most of the shepherd breeds. All meet most, if not all, the requirements of a home guardian he’s aiming for in his dogs. And all can be trained to a high level of proficiency for this task.

BTW. APBT is my all time favorite breed! And apparently Lee knows what he is doing with the use of them! However, if I were to ever breed bandogs for human application & animal applications, I would think APBT would bring too much human "niceness" to the equation, where by using dogs like Am Staff, Am. Bulldog, English Bull terrier etc... can bring a lot of the same attributes (toughness, athleticism, wind, etc) that the APBT brings without being so people friendly. They dont bring gameness, but the high level gameness (staying in combat for over an hour) is usually only reserved for 1 activity). Just my observation! And I do like Lee's dogs. These are just questions for debate.

I agree. I have much respect for what Lee has accomplished. However, IDK if you need to use a game bred dog (use of game bred APBT) to accomplish what his goal is ......effective home guardian PP dog who is chill with all family members AND can excel at hog hunting. I look at people like Cali Catchers, who tests his dogs HARD with hogs (and are great with family and all kids), and A+ protection dogs...and a lot of these dogs have zero terrier in them. Some are Boerboel, some Neo/corso italian matstff, some Tosa, etc. Anybody who knows knows that these dogs knows that he tests them hard on tough terrain and do great. Not saying Lee's dogs cant do what Cali's do, but what can Lee's dogs do that Cali's cannot? Which begs the question, why the need for game bred APBT?

Richard straton believes the apbt specifically the gamebred apbt is the original bulldog no crosses . The gamebred apbt is a breed onto itself... some historians believe the apbt maybe a century old not 150 years.

If you do some research on the old southern bulldogs the dogs that went south right of the ship with immigrants to work farms etc that will lead you to bulldogs hence why southerners called apbt bulldogs.

The fondation dogs for most of all the game lines always leads back to big dogs 65 plus lbs now if there were being crossed they would've been much smaller dogs. The crossing started with the akc and ukc show dogs .

Yes, he does believe that. I respect him, but I disagree...as I believe it is a terrier cross, as stated in this video...for a few reasons, I know some old dogmen that when they were young dogmen they were elbow to elbow to old dogmen of their time, and they were taught that, plus the Bull-n-Terrier references, plus there are registered dogs that were less than 20#.

Now let’s understand one thing it’s possible to breed game dogs. The American Bulldog on the “ painter blood line” is living proof the problem is getting one of that strain. The Johnson blood is different ( he added Saint Bernard) the other proof is when you make Presa pit Bull mastiff Neo however the problem is getting the same results ( offspring) can be difficult. Remember it took them 25, years to make Dogo Argentinian just to give you a better idea. There’s great dogs around the world were people still use them as baiting dogs those dogs would be of great selection if you could get them. Some dogs are late bloomers so sometimes people think they have a useless dog and many dogs have been ruined.

Something that wasn’t spoke on was that some “PR” blood can work. Lineage gives you an idea but the proof is the dog in front of you. The dog he threw shade on bred off of Gamblers GrCh Virgil may not be purely gamebred but his performance speaks for itself.

I like the look of his dogs but I’m not entirely convinced about the working ability tbh. Would like to see a dog enter some sort of trial. A dog in its own environment biting a sleeve and not letting go when it hears the sound of a whip just doesn’t do much to convince me. Would like to see the dogs put in different situations and under more pressure. I want to like his dogs as I see many bandogs being bred just for looks. Just be nice to see the dogs tested more IMO.

I have a bandog and it is exactly as you described. Sport dog that will bite a sleeve in a rehearsed routine. She is not a protection dog. Idk if these are the same but I wouldn't trust anyone again without extensive proof and a variety of different training scenarios.
