I was following the
I was following the
I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red
Tied 'round their throats
To keep their little heads
From falling in the snow.
And I turned 'round and there you go.
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow red
As strawberries in the summertime.
I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red
Tied 'round their throats
To keep their little heads
From falling in the snow.
And I turned 'round and there you go.
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow red
As strawberries in the summertime.
I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red
Tied 'round their throats
To keep their little heads
From falling in the snow.
And I turned 'round and there you go.
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow red
As strawberries in the summertime.
The lyrics of "White Winter Hymnal" by Fleet Foxes tell the story of a winter scene with a group of people walking through the snow, wearing red scarves and coats to keep warm. The singer is following the group, when he turns around and sees a boy named Michael fall into the snow, turning it red like strawberries. The song speaks to the passage of time and the cyclical nature of life, connecting the innocence and joy of childhood with the bleakness of winter and the inevitability of death.
The repeated refrain of "I was following the pack" highlights the idea of conformity and the pressure to fit in with societal norms. The imagery of the red scarf symbolizes both warmth and the danger of suffocation or loss of identity. The contrast between the red scarves and white snow creates a vivid visual of the winter landscape, while the reference to strawberries in the summertime adds a touch of nostalgia and sweetness to the scene.
Overall, "White Winter Hymnal" is a hauntingly beautiful and deeply introspective song that explores themes of identity, conformity, and mortality, utilizing the evocative imagery of a winter landscape to paint a resonant picture of the human experience.

It's what's called a round in choral singing and she does it beyond justice vs. Fleet Foxes. A round is supposed to make you feel like you can sing it for an hour. But Birdys version is genius in its haunting. It's with few pop peers.
