Anthem Pt. 2
blink-182 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything has fallen to pieces
The Earth is dying, help me Jesus
We need guidance, we've been misled
Young and hostile but not stupid

Corporate leaders, politicians
Kids can't vote, adults elect them
Laws that rule the school and workplace
Signs that caution sixteen's unsafe

We really need to see this through
We never wanted to be abused
We'll never give up, it's no use
If we're fucked up, you're to blame

Let this train wreck burn more slowly
Kids are victims in this story
Drown the youth with useless warnings
Teenage rules, they're fucked and boring

We really need to see this through
We never wanted to be abused
We'll never give up, it's no use
If we're fucked up, you're to blame

Everything has fallen to pieces
Everything has fallen to pieces
Everything has fallen to pieces
Everything has fallen to

We really need to see this through
We never wanted to be abused

We'll never give up, it's no use
If we're fucked up, you're to blame

Overall Meaning

The song "Anthem Part 2" by blink-182 is a commentary on the state of the world and the youth's disillusionment with the systems in place. The opening lines, "Everything has fallen to pieces, Earth is dying help me Jesus, we need guidance, we've been misled," express a sense of despair and hopelessness towards the state of the world. The use of "Jesus" represents a cry for help and guidance from a higher power. The following lines, "Young and hostile but not stupid, corporate leaders, politicians...mobs that rule the school and workplace, signs that caution, sixteen's unsafe," highlight the various entities that young people feel are controlling them, and how they are being prevented from having a say in their own lives.

The chorus, "We really need to see this through, we never wanted to be abused, we'll never give up, it's no use, if we're f***ed up, you're to blame," expresses a sense of defiance and a call-to-action for the youth to take control of their lives and fight against the forces that are working against them. The song also touches on the idea of adult responsibility, with the line "if we're f***ed up, you're to blame," holding the older generations accountable for the state of the world and the problems faced by the youth.

When this album came out I was 14 and my mum used to often give me and my friends a lift from time to time and we would blare this album out. She actually quite liked blink by the end of it.. anyway. One time she had to take her car to the manufacturers garage for a repair, the song must have been on Please Take Me Home when she handed over the keys for repair.

The next day my dad goes back to collect the car..

'Interesting music your wife listens to' Said the mechanic.

He said, and i quote 'we pulled the car in the garage and blaring out at full volume was a song about a dog and a man. The mechanic (chuckling as he said it) said the worst thing was people on the forecourt could hear it and had a look of disgust.

Nothing made me laugh more than my dad retelling that tail the other night.

True. It’s so fucking good

Sagittarius experience

Can't believe this song is 20 years old now and it still sounds good in 2021 as it did in 2001. Timeless.

man. nostalgic. this album got me through middle school the scariest time in my life. my mother's death, my dad's addiction and getting separated from my older sister while being bounced around extended families homes, this was the only thing constant in my life that I could escape to.
