Dammit
blink-182 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's alright to tell me what you think about me
I won't try to argue or hold it against you
I know that you're leaving, you must have your reasons
The season is calling, your pictures are falling down

The steps that I retrace, the sad look on your face
The timing and structure, did you hear he fucked her?
A day late, a buck short, I'm writing the report
On losing and failing, when I move, I'm flailing now

And it's happened once again
I'll turn to a friend
Someone that understands
Sees through the master plan
But everybody's gone
And I've been here for too long
To face this on my own
Well, I guess this is growing up
Well, I guess this is growing up

And maybe I'll see you at a movie sneak preview
You'll show up and walk by on the arm of that guy
And I'll smile and you'll wave, we'll pretend it's okay
The charade, it won't last, when he's gone I won't come back

And it'll happen once again
You'll turn to a friend
Someone that understands
And sees through the master plan
But everybody's gone
And you've been there for too long
To face this on your own
Well, I guess this is growing up

Well, I guess this is growing up
Well, I guess this is growing up
Well, I guess this is growing up

Well, I guess this is growing up
Well, I guess this is growing up

Overall Meaning

Blink-182's song "Dammit" is an emotional reflection on life's transitions and the challenges of growing up. The opening lines "It's alright to tell me what you think about me / I won't try to argue or hold it against you" suggests that the singer is trying to come to terms with the fact that he is no longer a carefree teenager and that people will have their own opinions about him. The following lines "I know that you're leaving, you must have your reasons / The season is calling, your pictures are falling down" suggest that the person he is referring to is moving on, either physically or emotionally, and he is left to deal with the aftermath.

The chorus "And it's happened once again / I'll turn to a friend / Someone that understands / Sees through the master plan / But everybody's gone / And I've been here for too long / To face this on my own / Well, I guess this is growing up" highlights the theme of loneliness and isolation. The singer is struggling to come to terms with the fact that he is growing up and that he cannot rely on his friends and acquaintances in the same way he used to. He is left feeling detached and disconnected from those around him.

The second verse "And maybe I'll see you at a movie sneak preview / You'll show up and walk by on the arm of that guy / And I'll smile and you'll wave, we'll pretend it's okay / The charade, it won't last, when he's gone I won't come back" continues the theme of nostalgia and the effort to come to terms with the changes that come with growing up. The singer is trying to maintain a veneer of normalcy even as his world is changing around him, and this so-called "charade" is ultimately unsustainable.

Feels kinda weirdly amazing listening to this when you've... 'grown up'

@mattybarker1058

Haha. Facts. How long you been holding this in your back pocket?

I remember my girlfriend breaking up with me in my dad's car in 2002. I said, "I guess this is growing up." We both laughed. Then I bought her Carls Jr before never having sex with her again.

I think you mean classic blink 182. It’s not the OG lineup if Scott is missing.
