Heart's All Gone
blink-182 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take off the gloves
We fell in love by the side of the road
This desert will break you down
The veins you cut
Your smoking tongue is the end of us all
But you only care about
Fame and fortune
Watching others tortured
Casting your reflection
Grocery store perfection
This is the last time
Sent to the front line
With dirty boots on the ground
You said I'll make this all mine

You seemed so sweet at the start
But the start's all wrong
You say you speak from your heart
But your heart's all gone
Yeah your heart's all gone

Blackjack and architect
Let's drink ourselves to death
The crimes of everyone
Passed down from father to son
Hopeless and destitute
Destroyed by gratitude
Your strongest lines of defense
Are all just self-inflicted wounds

You seemed so sweet at the start
But the start's all wrong
You say you speak from your heart
But your heart's all gone

You seemed so sweet at the start
But the start's all wrong
You say you speak from your heart
But your heart's all gone
Yeah your heart's all gone

You seemed so sweet at the start
But the start's all wrong
You say you speak from your heart
But your heart's all gone

You seemed so sweet at the start
But the start's all wrong
You say you speak from your heart

But your heart's all gone
Yeah your heart's all gone

Overall Meaning

The song "Heart's All Gone" by blink-182 is a fast-paced, energetic punk-rock anthem that explores themes of love, loss, and disillusionment. The lyrics describe a relationship that begins with promises of romance and devotion but quickly devolves into a toxic cycle of self-destruction and neglect. The opening line, "Take off the gloves," suggests a willingness to engage in a raw, unfiltered confrontation, while the reference to falling in love "by the side of the road" hints at a connection forged in a liminal space between possibility and risk. However, the subsequent lines paint a darker picture, with the "desert" representing a harsh, unforgiving environment that can erode even the strongest bonds. The "veins you cut" and "smoking tongue" of the other person suggest an addiction or self-destructive behavior that ultimately destroys the relationship.

The chorus repeats the phrase "You seemed so sweet at the start / But the start's all wrong / You say you speak from your heart / But your heart's all gone," emphasizing the disappointment and disillusionment the singer feels as the relationship deteriorates. The following verses further develop this theme, with references to drinking ("Let's drink ourselves to death") and generational cycles of trauma ("Passed down from father to son"). The final lines emphasize the self-destructive tendencies of the other person, with "self-inflicted wounds" serving as the only defense mechanism.

Overall, "Heart's All Gone" is a raw, powerful statement about the pitfalls of love and the dangers of becoming too invested in someone else's downward spiral. The fast tempo and aggressive tone of the music add to the sense of urgency and desperation that permeates the lyrics.

It's disgusting how under rated this album was.

Sorry but i wouln't call it underrated. I'm a big Blink 182 fan since my adolescent years. I love all of their albums, but as i think Neighborhoods was a good one, it wasn't a great, different or outstanding effort. It just isn't up there with Blink 182 or with TOYPAJ. Let's not even talk about how this one compares with Enema of The State or Dude Ranch.

I get that point of view. This album just reminds me of where I was at in my life when it came out, so it gets bonus points from me hahaha

Nah, Ryan, I kinda agree with you. I don't think you can judge any Blink against any Blink album. Enema of the State is now one of my least favorite hind sight as they've grown....but it took that album to grow and I loved it when I was a kid. I'm 30 now. Their newer works relate to me more. Neighborhoods was good, but that it wasn't celebrated like Enema of the State may have been due to Jerry Finn's death. He helped Blink achieve what they did. Blink's music is era-istic. Early on, their immaturity was awesome....loved the dick jokes and stupidity (as in funny videos). The self-titled and Neighborhoods albums both just felt like a change in that demeanor. I feel like I've grown up with the band. Immaturity, some maturity, and a bit more mature...will always be a fan of this band. This all being said, I listened to Enema the other day....and thoroughly enjoyed the hell out of it. If you like it and think it's awesome, fuck it.

How exactly was it even recorded? I thought dogs eating dogs was just for that blink 182 christmas thing they had for it.

Ryan Rathwell

It was recorded in separate studios for the most part (With the exception of 3 or 4 songs) due to Mark Hoppus living in London, while Tom and Travis lived in California.
Dogs Eating Dogs was a follow up EP they released a year later in December. Boxing Day was a Christmas song, but the other tracks aren't. It's actually a very solid EP. If you haven't already, check it out!

"Neighbourhoods" is like wine, it gets better with time. People weren't ready for this album, including myself. Sometime later, I loved it and still do! ❤

This song is definitely designed to show off Travis' drumming. Love it!
