New Hope
blink-182 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got her in my head
At night when I go to bed
And I know it sounds lame, but
She's the girl of my dreams

And of course I'd do anything for her
I'd search the moons of Endor
I'd even walk naked through
The deserts of Tatooine

Princess Leia, where are you tonight?
And who's laying there by your side?
Every night I fall asleep with you
And I wake up alone

And even though I'm not as cool as Han
I still want to be your man
You're exactly the kind of
Alderranian that I need

But when you were available, I was
Drinking Colt 45's with Lando
I was hanging out in the cantina
On Mos Eisley

Princess Leia, where are you tonight?
And who's laying there by your side?
Every night I fall asleep with you
And I wake up alone

Princess Leia
Princess Leia

Princess Leia, where are you tonight?
And who's laying there by your side?

Every night I fall asleep with you
And I wake up alone

Overall Meaning

In "A New Hope," Blink-182's Mark Hoppus sings, "I've got her in my head, at night when I go to bed And I know it sounds lame, but she's the girl of my dreams." While listening to this song, it's apparent that Hoppus has developed a huge crush on Princess Leia, the iconic character from the Star Wars franchise. This song is essentially a love letter to the character, and Hoppus is singing about how he would do anything to be with her.

Hoppus talks about how he would search the moons of Endor and walk naked through the deserts of Tatooine if it meant being with Princess Leia. He’s so infatuated with her that he even sings about how he falls asleep every night with her in his mind, only to wake up alone. Hoppus admits he’s not as cool as Han Solo, but he still wants to be Princess Leia's man. He praises her for being exactly the kind of "Alderranian" he needs.

The song ends with Hoppus lamenting about drinking Colt 45’s with Lando and hanging out in the cantina on Mos Eisley when Princess Leia was available. Overall, the song is a humorous take on a serious issue that many people can relate to: having a crush on a fictional character.
