The Wolves & The Ravens
by Rogue Valley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the morning, by the sea
As the fog clears from the sand
Have no money in my hand
Have no home, I have no land

But it doesn't trouble me
As I lay beside the fire
I am easy to inspire
There is little I require

I wasn't yours and you weren't mine
Though I've wished from time to time
We had found a common ground
Your force was such a welcome sound

How the emptiness would fill
With the waves and with your song
People find where they belong
Or keep on

Through the never-ending maze
Where the way is seldom clear
There is no map or compass near
Drive a ship back in the steer

Through the bleak and early morn
Where a stronger will is sworn
Where the moon moves so slow
And I seem to never let you go

When my hands are old and ache
And my memory flickers dim
And my bones don't hold my skin
There's no place I haven't been

I recall the days were few
That is all that I can do

Feel the carvings in the tree
That give shape for you and me

Overall Meaning

The verses of Rogue Valley's song 'The Wolves & The Ravens' describe a wandering, free-spirited narrator who finds contentment in the simple pleasures of life. The singer is without material possessions, but feels no concern as they lie by a fire and take inspiration from their surroundings. They reflect on a past relationship that was never truly theirs, but still remembers the comfort found in the wild and the sound of the other person's voice. The chorus states that in life, people will either find where they belong, or keep searching for it endlessly. The song then continues to describe the difficulties faced in life, feeling as though there is no clear direction and no guidance, but the singer continues to persist and never lets go. They end by looking back on their life and the memories they hold dear, appreciating the experiences they've had.

The lyrics paint a picture of a person who is content with the present, despite not having a clear direction in life. They take inspiration from their environment and embrace the freedom of not being tied down to any particular place. The idea of finding a place where one belongs is presented as an ongoing journey, rather than a final destination. The song presents a hopeful message that even though life can be difficult and unpredictable, it is still possible to find joy and meaning in the present moment.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty seriously had one of the best soundtracks for a movie

Leanne Brown

It's my favorite soundtrack ever by far!

Eph Pro

Agreed! But I wonder what type of music is this called? I love this kind of spiritual and traveling feel of songs. Very inspiring.

Mel Man

It's ridiculous how good the soundtracks were. And I was just finding them one after the other.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is perhaps one of the most grounded movies I have ever seen. Instead of some action film or drama it genuinely feels like your just watching a relatable guy moving through life, and finding adventure and love in a unique way. I salute you those who made this film.

Could not agree MORE with you if I tried! I've watched it over 50 times, and each time, it moves me as if it were the first. I always wonder why it was a ticket failure. As far as I'm concerned, I will watch it at least 5 times a year!

I was having an anxiety attack right before I discovered this song. My limbs were tense, my head spun, my breathing was heavy, and I felt ready to run for my life.
Then I listened to this. Immediately I began to calm down to the point where I just collapsed on my bed and began to cry. I felt that I was safe; that everything was going to be OK.
Thank you for this.

This song has always had a special place in my heart but the meaning of it has changed over the years for me.

I was with my ex bf for almost 5 years before we decided to separate. It was mutual since we just grew apart. We were still friends and he was one of the only people I can call “best friends”. Just a few days ago, he passed away unexpectedly. It was so sudden and I was so shocked and heartbroken.

His favorite movie was The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and this was his favorite song. He even told me he wanted to get a tattoo of a wolf and a raven because of it.

Along this journey, the song has come a long way with me. From music I used to always listen to in the car, to a reminder of all the good moments I had with him, and now it represents someone I cared so dearly. I come back to listen to this again because of him and I believe I will always think of him whenever I hear this song.
