I turned on the engine in the morning and my clutch felt very soft when i pushed it in with no pressure and i could not get it in gear.
The clutch pedal returned ok.
The next day i tried pressing the clutch in & out lots of times but still the same with a very soft clutch pedal with a little pressure felt at the very bottom of the pedal travel.
Anyway later that day i checked for leaks and found nothing anywhere and topped up with brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir to full and was previously about 3mm from the full mark.
I had not checked it for a while and put it down to pad wear with it going down a little.
So i put the top back on the reservoir then got back in the car and the clutch was perfect again with the first press with full pressure and then i drove the car around with no issues.
I have had a pattern clutch & concentric slave fitted 12 months ago and done 5,000 miles with it.
Also i have had a pattern clutch master cylinder fitted 6 years ago.
Can you please tell me what the problem is as this is very puzzling.

Hey Scotty, great video, thanks for sharing! I replaced both master and slave in my gf's 01 tacoma (a rope tied to the clutch did the trick for a couple months, no issues shifting at all! :D), bled the line pretty well I think, and it shifted into first gear fine for a day or two. Now we're getting a violent shaking and a pretty horrific noise (not all the time, but most times) when we release the clutch while in first gear, but the rest seem fine. It feels like the guts of the truck are going to fall out onto the road! Any ideas or things to look into? Thanks! You're the man!

I've found it easier to start the metal lines BEFORE I fully tighten the brake/clutch cylinders. It gives a little play so they're easier to get started. Thanks for doing these vids, VERY helpful.

+TacoSaladSport It would be better to provide the number of hours needed for the job, Then just multiply by the hourly rate of the mechanics in your part of the world. Cost of the parts will vary too much with the make and model to be helpful. Plus you still have to pay for those parts whether you do it yourself or someone does it for you.

I just finished replacing master and slave clutch cylinder, but I have to also replace the hydraulic hose that connect to the slave cylinder because the previous guy that replaced the slave 10 years ago over tighten it that I end up rounding off the nut even with a flared open wrench. Hey Scotty, this just happen to my 2004 Honda Civic Si. It's a little different though, when driving the clutch will get stuck to the floor having a hard time shifting out of first/reverse. However, when it's parked and turned off it works just like normal. I couldn't find a leak anywhere so I called a mechanic to come and check on it and he couldn't find a leak either. He drove it around a parking lot for a bit and the clutch started sticking. He says it my be a hydraulic leak in the line and is saying that he can fix that for me, but can't guarantee that it'll fix the clutch either. So he's said that if he's replacing the lines that he might as well replace the clutch itself and that may be able to solve the issue. I want to know what you think about that, is he trying to scam me or is there another problem with the car, thank you in advance.

You got really lucky on that slave cylinder being external.
I had to change one on an 2002 Ford Focus last year and OT was internal and figured that since I had to go so far as tear the transmission apart, may as well replace the clutch and throw out bearing since the vehicle had 85+k miles anyway.

Hey Scotty I just had my motor swap done with a new clutch installed and I noticed the clutch engagement was rough i went and adjusted the master cylinder myself and the problem went away. But now the car revs it self. When decelerating with the A/c on I just bled the clutch recently and the pedal feel stills okay. I started the car up and it sounded like metal or something flying off and pinging as soon as I started the car. It still drives and runs as it should but I’m worried. I started it up again today when it was cold it sounded like the clutch was a small squeaking like cricket noise until I depressed my foot on the clutch as I drove it the sound went away.

Scotty, what should I look for on a front end suspension to locate a steering wheel vibration after hitting bumps around 60-70 mph? It drives completely fine at speeds above or below. Wheel should be balanced, I'll have to clean the hub surface today. Sway bar end links do twist, but don't move up or down.

+Scotty Kilmer turns out to be a worn axle. There's about 1/4" of play. Really thought it was the sway bar links but after a closer inspection all of the bushings are in good condition.

My Nissan Spec-V used to do this only when it was really hot out and I was in traffic for a long time. It started when it only had like 60,000 km on it and sometimes it would feel like there was air in it until it was like an inch from the floor and I felt the resistance. Really weird, I never figured it out because it rarely happened so it was hard to reproduce...I just dealt with it lol

Why not use a hose with a one way check valve on the bleeder valve? This way you can pump the clutch until you need more brake fluid in the reservoir.

Scotty, it appears on my car that the clutch master cylinder does not have its own fluid reservoir but a hose attaches it to the same reservoir as the brake master cylinder. Would I also have to bleed the brakes after replacing these parts you've replaced in this video?

Hey Scotty is it necessary to clean out the part where the clutch slave cylinder bolts into? Cause mine was all dirty but I just left all the crud there and bolted the new one in anyway. Didn't seem to have any leaks.

Hi Scotty I'm a small time mechanic I'm a big fan of your I watch a lot of your videos, anyways just for assurance of you install a clutch and pressure plate at wat angle should the fingers be in because the one I'm setting up the finger go from a straight out position to a flat position is anything wrong there

There doesn't appear to be any external fluid leaks in the clutch master & slave cylinder assemblies rather it appears to be the fact that the piston in the master cylinder is stuck.
Yes ! I have saved quite a few hundred bucks by doing the work myself on my clutch, I've had an issue with a sticking clutch slave cylinder which caused the clutch not to fully engage when the clutch pedal was released in my car which has the T56 Tremec setup bolted up to the Chevy LS1 engine,the piston eventually freed itself up after bleeding the clutch system.
The fluid looks dirty so I'd say some sludge is jamming up the piston inside the bore so maybe a couple of new seals (if available) and/or dismantling then washing it out with methylated spirits would work,then the system can be bled after assembling.
I've had to be careful with the GM master cylinder,while I can order aftermarket wiper seals for them (I can't find OEM seals for the newer ones) the clutch pedal height must be at an equal distance from the floor as to what the brake pedal is or else excessive force will cause brake fluid to be forced past the wiper seals so I saved myself a lot of money be simply adjusting the clutch pedal height for the master cylinder which has cured the leak & no new wiper seals were needed.
Yes! , a mechanic would probably do it the way mentioned in the video if no seals were available but I wouldn't (my brother Scott would),I have been trying to eradicate oil leaks from the engine (Chevy LS1) in my car,the oil pan & valley cover gaskets I have replaced along with the front crankshaft oil seal,there was still an oil leak coming from the top of the motor which I traced back to the oil filler neck being too loose in the valve cover so I used silicone sealant to stop that.
There was still the odd drip coming from the bottom of the Bell housing which has slowed up as of late meaning oil could've been sitting inside of the starter motor or something,I checked it twice by idling it facing uphill for 5 - 10 minutes & there has been no drips coming from the rear the second time around whereas there was the first time I did it,I bought a new rear main oil seal in lieu of replacing it but if it stops completely I won't worry about it.
I just want to keep what Little money I have in my bank account as it seems to be virtually impossible to keep money in that account with what money I'm on (government handouts) & my brothers working.

Hey Scotty. I fixed the accumulator leak I had , and put a new a/c compressor in. I don't know why but my clutch is sticking . Could the belt be too tight ? Or do I need more freon or do i need to put more coolant in. Some dos leak out when I put freon in for some reason.

What would the problem be if the clutch won't depress? It'll go down once, come back up, then lock firm. The clutch is brand spankin' new. Also, it's a hydraulic clutch.

I had the fingers on the clutch seized on me one time on a old mud truck. Pedal stuck almost to the floor and figured it was the linkage jammed up. Look at it and it looked fine. I then removed the inspection cover and saw that I could move the clutch disc by hand. Taking my trusty aerokroil and carefully spraying all the fingers and not the clutch itself I started it and work the clutch and it freed right up. After my leg got tired and I jammed on it real good a few times out of anger 😂

Man, my 2007 Volvo's clutch is a pretty different story. The slavecylinder is around the gearbox's axel, and I needed to take the whole gearbox off to get to it.
Scott, what do you think about dualmassflywheels? If I replace it with a ordinary flywheel, could it damage the engine on a long run?

Very good video!! My pedal does not stick to the floor as in your video, but there is little resistance as I press it to the floor! I pumped it 10 times and managed to get my car back into gear, but today, after topping up the clutch fluid, and pumping the pedal again, it hardly goes into gear at all! time for a new Master and slave cillinder do you think? anyways, June 2016 i bought a 1998 Honda accord 4dr 2.0 Ltr RHD. Auto trans.. it came with a million issues due to the previous owner not servicing it often enough. i wont tell you all the issues in details it'll be too long for here. in September 2016. theres almost a 3sec delay before it changes gear whenever i accelerate hard. October i changed the oil but not the filter because i was told the filter is built in the transmission which is expensive to get done. after oil change it works smoothly an changes very quickly but only for a few hours or maybe a day then it goes back to rough shifting. when I try to reverse it slams very hard and loud into reverse as if a big 2 ton iron fell from the sky. thats hw loud and embarrasing it is. the trick part is if i shut off the car wait a few secs then start it up back, it changes smoothly again. i bought a bottle of Lubguard and pour it in. it works fine the next morning then issues again nex couple hrs. fastfooward to December 2016. i changed the oil in my engine from 10/30 to 20/50 grade and i also changed cam seal and engine water pump. From then on the car has been driving nicely an shifting nicely but i still feel alittle rough change when i make a sudden stop then drive off immediately. it struggles or vibrate to go from low gear to the nex immediately. i have to be patient listening to it with a delay then press gas without rushing it to change. if i rush it and accellerate it will slam into gear very roughly and then it jus continue being rough gearing down and up unless i stop and shut off the car and turn it back on. what do you think?

Fixed mine free. I jammed up the master cylinder 2 days ago it didn't release the clutch on an old jeep. I removed the master cylinder and the plunger was stuck open. Cleaned it up best I could. Then I heated the piston chamber with a butane torch for less than a minute. It poped out (because its spring loaded). I cleaned the bore out good. Re-assemble. bleed. Drive. It cost 2 ounces of oil.

I've had the sticking clutch pedal on my '88 VW Jetta. But it didn't have a hydraulic clutch, the clutch was operated via a cable. And this cable was bad (they are known to do that), so the small individual wires it consisted off were ripped. Not all of them, but enough so they would stick out and make the clutch pedal not always go back. Quite annoying to drive like this... ;)

My car's clutch sticks to the floor after a few minutes drive or when the engine is up to normal temp. It's all fine and dandy at first though. No leaks from the Master or Slave. What could be the most common cause of this? The car has 90,000+ Kilometers on it. Never changed the clutch fluid ever since I bought it brand new back in 2005. Old dirty fluid maybe? I did have it worked on by a local mechanic to have the clutch pressure plate, lining and release bearing changed to new ones.

Hey Scotty, My clutch pedal is way too light all the way to the floor but travels back to the up position. I suspect the Slave cylinder is busted because the bottom of the transmission where it is located is leaking. But if the slave cylinder is busted how is the clutch pedal returning back to the up position if there is such pressure loss?
I will hopefully know tomorrow but I was interested in any input.

Mr. Scott, I have a 1994 Ford f150, today I was driving it and I went to push the clutch in and it became stuck halfway of being pressed, I pushed it again and it broke something, and the only thing that fell out was a black plastic piece with three white pieces inside of it. Any chance you might know what it could be, I have been looking at clutch assemblies all evening and cant seem to find it any where. I just replaced the clutch master and slave cylinder 6 months ago and I doubt that it could be that

Scotty, how would I know if it's my master slave cylinder or master clutch cylinder? The break fluid in our 2016 jeep renegade sport was completely emptied out the reservoir and the clutch goes to the floor but doesn't come back up. The Jeep worked fine the previous day no clutch shifting problems or nothing. I recently had the clutch replaced, but not the master cylinder or slave cylinder.

That's all good if it's the booster or the slave cylinder. In most cases on older vehicle that look like they've been sitting like that one. It's a stuck clutch disc or the flywheel needs to be resurfaced. Looks like you got lucky on that Toyota

Hi Scotty, I have a 2007 VW rabbit standard transmission, sometimes when I try to engage 3rd or 4th gear it's kind of hard and even I have to release clutch and press it again to engage it, do you think that I need new clutch or something???? Thx

Scotty my clutch on my Saab 9-3 from 2000 wont release properly (I think) It has done 2000miles and drove perfect until someone launched my car from a standstill. When flooring my car it wont go in next gear, normal daily driving no issues. Mounts are good. When downshifting from 3 to 2 or from 5 to 4 i hear a grinding noise which goes away when releasing the clutch.

hi Scotty I just bought a 2007 Chevy Silverado classic style. well the clutch pedal squeaks so loud when you press it and when it releases I know it's the pedal because it does it even with the engine off. I believe it's a hydraulic it has a plastic tube behind the pedal into some kind of connector. I tried spraying the silicone grease and still squeaks any advice will help

Hello Mr.Kilmer. I have a 2000 GMC Sonoma rear wheel drive, 5 speed transmission with a 2.2 4cylinder engine and I was driving home last night and as I pressed the clutch to go to 2nd gear I noticed the clutch pedal was hard to press and stuck to the floor. I turned the engine off to take a look to under the hood to see if I needed fluid in the clutch master cylinder and it was still full and dirty so I got back in to start the truck and even though the clutch pedal was stuck to the floor the engine would not crank or start. So I got back out of the truck to look under it that night and noticed some wetness on the ground in what appeared to be in the front of the transmission where it meets the oil pan I thought. So I had the old truck towed home that night and was able to get it jacked up today and noticed the line that goes into the side of the transmission with the o-ring around it and a clip around it was just hanging there out of place so I pushed it back in place and now the clutch pedal is not as hard and has very little play, but I still can't press the clutch enough to start the truck of even turn or crank the engine. Could it need transmission fluid pumped into the transmission or need bleeding from the clutch master cylinder? Mr Kilmer with your expertise please give me your advice on how to get my 2000 GMC Sonoma rear wheel drive, 5 speed transmission with a 4 cylinder engine up and driving again? Thanks!

I tried doing a clutch replacement by myself and it was just taking to long so when I went to put the wheels back on (before I put the clutch fork/rod back in) inhad my father help by holding the brake, but the first time he hit the clutch pedal first and now that had the clutch replaced, the clutch pedal won't come back up... Will this method help?

After replacing my clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder the pedal doesn't come up as high as it used to (Only comes up about 3/4 of the normal or previous distance) , it doesn't stick to the floor but still doesn't seem quite right, does that mean one of my new parts is defective, the fluid level seems to stay constant in the reservoir. Thanks
