I believe warlocks can pick up an invocation at lvl 7 called sculpture of flesh which allows them to cast polymorph on themselves once per long rest using their spell slot.

Quandrix Student as actually a good background for the Monkey King.

Sun Wukong’s first master on his quest for immortality (and the one who gave him his name), Master Subodhi, taught him many things that work as part of that background.

You would just say the focus was not on the math aspect of the background, but more on the arcana, nature, and metaphysical aspects as the text describes.

My friends and I semi-regularly play lvl 20 One-Shots. We did one where we played myth inspired characters.

My Wu-Kong were 6 levels Astral Self Monk. 4 Levels of Echo Knight Fighter and 10 levels Moon Druid. I could mimic Wukongs Stunning Spell. His Transformations and even his doppelgangers (Echo Knight and Conjure Animal). Druid Spells actually cover a lot of Wukongs abilities, especially with Tasha's Extra Spells for Druid

Wukong has many abilities and skill which makes him hard to build in DnD in my personal experience, seeing your interpretation is very neat. Echo Knight, Circle of Stars/Moon, Trickery domain, Kensei, Hexblade, Swashbuckler can all make Wukong in some aspect. It depends on how you view the character.

5 years ago when the black myth trailer was first circling the lots, i made an echo knight fighter, celestial warlock Changeling for my Wukong build, improved pact blade let me use heavy weapons for more damage and ranged weapons for a re-flavored extending staff.

Playing as the monkey king is a joy in of itself.

I can see only one home brew thing that would make the build even better. Asking the dm to home brew your quarter staff to use the damage die of a great club as at least in the translation I read he wields it like a cudgel most of the time.. so he uses this elegant staff mostly like a big scary club and it is a very heavy staff. (Understatement of a life time. Well over 10000 pounds.)

My favorite mutliclass that I use way too often, Hexblade + paladin anything. Smites upon smites…charisma for everything necessary…

Made a Wukong character before a few times personally I prefer going bugbear. With the new 5.5 monk you get the free reaction dodge so hadozee dodge isn't as needed.

I think new monk is pretty solid with a few levels in druid for the transforming but loving the guide 😊

This one is tricky since if you try to put too much into it you won't be able to accomplish anything. I personally did consider the need for transformations as a primary aspect so, what if you just went Warlock until you unlocked the final tier of spells and took the Heavily Armored Feat since you gain Medium Armor Proficiency with Hexblade, so you'd get the Heavy Armor Prof w/ a +1 to STR. Polymorph and Alter Self as your Eldritch Invocations along with True Polymorph at the final tier would allow you to take the form and abilities of other creatures.

I'd also see if I could squeeze in three levels of Echo Knight so I get the duplicates, which can be paired up with Mirror Image to create the image of multiple monkeys.

You could actually triple smite, because divine and eldritch smite don’t use your bonus action, are not spells and are not concentration, so you could use both of those and add In banishing smite at the same time.

That is a pretty good background choice. I think it’s better than noble. According to the book, Journey to the West, he spent many years under the tutelage of a great Taoist Immortal who taught him the techniques to achieve enlightenment and immortality, the 72 transformations, various magic spells, and his cloud somersault among other things.

If I remember right he only wore the armor after getting it from the dragon kings up until he was buried under Five Elements Mountain. Once he got out 500 years later he no longer had the armor and instantly killed a tiger for its skin as clothing. When he began his journey he became a Buddhist monk. I haven’t played the game yet, I want to, so I’m not sure if this changes things because over heard it doesn’t take place during the book.

The Wukong build I tried out was a Rune Knight for the size and the flame rune mixed with Bestial Barbarian for the active tail. It wasn't perfect but it was cool.

@@dndbuilds since they say that 2024 PHB is backwards compatible, does that mean a paladin can take the eldritch adept feat to gain the new pact of the blade invocation?

If yes then the paladin 6 bard/sorcerer 14 would have a 9th lvl spell slot, ability to use charisma for melee attacks and aura of protection.

Also put the cartomancer feat on this build and now we can cast high level spells with casting time of one action like wish once per day as a bonus action.

I don't think you can make Sun Wukong as a Player Character, he's just got too much. Magic, A literal dozen Immortalities stacked on top of each other, Martial Arts, Unlimited Wildshape, both in forms and duration. Plus, y'know, the flying cloud and the staff with a canonical weight (17,550 lbs) so heavy 99.99999% of players couldn't lift it without a STR score of 1000 minimum.

Using 2024 phb I'd personally go fighter eldritch knight 7/trickery domain cleric 13 because sun wukong is a bit of a trickster he's very blunt and matter of fact so that means dumping Charisma and mainly investing in Wisdom (magic initiate origin feat to get shillelagh which functionally could normally be a twig you have at the ready to grow into a full on staff get 14 dex for Medium armor and invest the rest in Constitution because you're gonna be up close and personal with people, now I recommended eldritch knight because 1 it's really good in the new players handbook getting the extra attack that bladesinger gets and because you can use it to flesh out his kit with stuff you probably wouldn't get from trickery cleric however if you want to lean heavier into his clone ability I'd recommend instead investing 6 levels of echo knight fighter instead of the 7 levels of eldritch knight (so you get the echo, extra attack and a feat) and then 14 levels of trickstery cleric however you have the option of skipping the level 6 fighter feat if you want to get an 8th level spell slot

Son Wukong is a very arrogant person with a lot of pride.... I'd say Tenser's Transformation would be his way of saying "I can beat you without using my magic!" kind of Spell. It gives you a big boost in exchange for Spellcasting and you have to make a Saving Throw if you loose concentration.

Instead of Tough at the end, I would choose Mobile. You're leaping and out of combat all the time, and while Far Step allows you teleport around, you don't have infinite spells. Son likes to kite enemies.

Would the broom of flying (uncommon magic item from DMG) be a good item to reflavour into the nimbus?

It has 50 ft flying speed and you can use a command word to call it to you if its within 1 mile distance.

Plus it doesn't have any limit on its flight unlike the winged boots.

Ngl, my main thought was 5 in Fighter (probably Battlemaster or Champion or Echo Knight) and 15 in Trickery Domain cleric.

The Domain spells work for it, Disguise self to look like other people, Mirror image (and invoke duplicity) for clones, Polymorph to turn into animals, and regular spells like Detect Evil and Good to see disguised demons and such.

Plus Cleric has a lot of spells to make yourself crazy durable and strong with buffs.

A lot of Journey to the West and the adventure they go on ties a lot to religion so I figured Cleric would be a way to go.

Huh... that's old school and that'd actually be interesting. Dying Will Flames, the X-Burner and Zero Point Breakthrough, maybe like a Fire and Ice combination with some healing. A Dragon Monk can handle some aspects of that if you want to be able to use Fire and Ice and Fly without resorting to a spell casting class, or if you want to go for Barbarian to represent the enhanced toughness. And if you do want spellcasting then there are options. I'd say Paladin but you can't smite on punches.
