In a YouTube video dodie made for the song she explained:
"I wrote this about a best friend who helped me find myself again after feeling lost in an unhealthy relationship. It’s called “Ready Now” because I am."
In the introduction of her April 29, 2019 YouTube video, dodie wrote of the song:
"'This is a song I wrote for the new Moomin Valley series! (It has a long intro because I wrote it to fit a scene and it needed a bit of wiggle room)
It was written for the episode; “The Invisible Child” (one of my fave childhood stories!)
This is truly a dream come true – to write to fit a beautiful narrative.
I wrote this about a best friend who helped me find myself again after feeling lost in an unhealthy relationship. It’s called “Ready Now” because I am.'"

All this time
I′d forgotten
People are kind
I was hurting
And you knew
So you showed me
You said, "I will listen
Tell it all
When you're finished
We′ll talk more"
But I didn't know how
So we took it in turns
And to my surprise
We found my words
Feet firm on the ground
We stood hand in hand
The world seemed to tell me
That I have a plan
Together, we sang
"I'm ready, now"
Something new
Something strange
Ten feet taller
I had changed
I believe you
I′m not wrong
Oh, it suits me
To feel strong
You said, "I will listen
Tell me it all
You don′t like the ending
Then we'll find one that′s yours"
Oh, how did you know
That's all we need?
A promise of hope
Is enough to feel free
Feet firm on the ground
We stood hand in hand
And I told the world
That I have a plan
Together, we sang
"I′m ready, now"
The lyrics to dodie's song Ready Now touch on themes of vulnerability, trust, and healing. The singer addresses another person who has helped them through a difficult time. The first stanza speaks to an experience of feeling seen and known by someone else after having buried their true emotions for a long time. The lyrics "you saw through me, all this time, I'd forgotten, people are kind" convey a sense of relief that someone finally sees through their facade and reminds them that there are still good people in the world.
The chorus of the song, "feet firm on the ground, we stood hand in hand, the world seemed to tell me that I have a plan, together we sang 'I'm ready, now'" emphasizes the importance of having a support system and finding a sense of purpose. The singer and the person they address come together to create a sense of stability and strength, which allows the singer to feel ready to face the future with a renewed sense of self-assurance.
The second verse continues to highlight the importance of listening and supporting others. The lyrics "I was hurting and you knew, so you showed me what to do" convey a sense of empathy and care for another person. The singer credits this person for giving them the space and encouragement to find their voice. The song ends by reflecting on the power of hope in helping someone find their way forward.

You saw through me
You understood me on a deeper level
All this time
For a long time
I'd forgotten
I had lost sight of
People are kind
People are compassionate
I was hurting
I was in emotional pain
And you knew
And you understood
So you showed me
So you guided me
What to do
What steps to take to heal
You said, 'I will listen
You promised to hear me out
Tell it all
Share everything
When you're finished
When you're ready
We'll talk more'
We'll continue the conversation
But I didn't know how
But I wasn't sure how to express myself
So we took it in turns
So we shared the conversation
And to my surprise
And it was unexpected
We found my words
I was able to articulate my thoughts
Feet firm on the ground
Confident
We stood hand in hand
We supported each other
The world seemed to tell me
The universe gave me a sign
That I have a plan
I have a purpose, a direction
Together, we sang
Together, we lifted our spirits
'I'm ready, now'
I'm ready to move forward
Something new
A change
Something strange
Something unfamiliar
Ten feet taller
More confident, empowered
I had changed
I was transformed
I believe you
I trust you
I'm not wrong
I'm valid in my feelings
Oh, it suits me
It feels right for me
To feel strong
To feel empowered
You said, 'I will listen
You promised to give me your full attention
Tell me it all
Share all of your thoughts
You don't like the ending
You're not satisfied with how things turned out
Then we'll find one that's yours'
Then we'll work to create a better outcome
Oh, how did you know
I'm surprised you understood me so well
That's all we need?
Is that really enough?
A promise of hope
A commitment for a better future
Is enough to feel free
Gives me a sense of liberation
And I told the world
I shared my transformation with others
That I have a plan
That I have direction and purpose
Together, we sang
Together with support and joy
'I'm ready, now'
I'm ready for what's next

Okay so freshman year of high school, like fresh off the middle school boat, I had a really big crush on this guy. He was about a month younger than me. I was shy and awkward and when we started talking, I kind of turned a blind eye to the way he was treating me. He put me down all the time and he corrected me when I wasn't wrong and made me feel like garbage, but he asked me out and I'd had a crush on him so we went out. He immediately started calling me his girlfriend and he was kind of possessive, which gave me large amounts of anxiety, so I "broke up" with him even though we weren't really together. Coming from a middle school as toxic and horrible as mine was, recieving the same treatment somewhere that was supposed to be better honestly broke me. I blamed myself for a year and a half and told myself that I was too sensitive and it kind of ruined me in terms of dating.
There was this one guy and he was so sweet and amazing and funny, and he treated me like an actual person so I developed feelings for him. He apparently saw me the same way, so last year (junior year) he asked me out. I said yes, but that anxiety just kicked back up again and I called it off, which was one of me biggest mistakes. I did like him a lot, but my experience with dating got the better of me and I decided it wasn't time.
I kept hanging out with the newer guy, and I discovered that I still had feelings for him not too long ago. I've kind of accepted the fact that freshman year I was treated like garbage and it wasn't my fault for being unhappy.
This song came out, and when I listened to it, it spoke to me. I've come so far in these last few years, and I decided that I didn't want my bad experiences to rule me for the rest of my life.
So, at the end of my senior year, I asked that guy out. We have a date this Saturday. 🖤

"feet firm on the ground.

Together we sang. I'm ready now"
I relate to this so well with my best friend. Every time I hear your voice I remember that love isn't impossible anymore
I love you, Dodie
Times have been a bit shaky lately. But my feet are now firm on the ground with my best friend's support
It makes me feel good when I can stand hand and hand with him and walk through all the things I couldn't have faced alone.
Sometimes, he'll say something that speaks volumes. But he'll simply tell me "you've got this" and I know the world has given me a plan.
Sometimes, our communication is listening to music and not worrying. We sit in his car and crank up the volume and feel ourselves being human. Together we sang
We've missed our chances on heaven a few times and he always holds my hand when we walk through hell together.
He helped me find my words. He made me realize; I'm ready now
He'll never see this, but I hope he knows I love him even though his friends are convinced we're dating
