While singing the song on tour she told the audience the subject of the song:
"Have you ever looked into the eyes of someone who hates you? That’s what this song is about."
Unlike many of Dodie’s previous studio-produced songs, “Monster” is produced with far less acoustic instrumentation.
She also explained in a video celebrating the release of "Human":
"This is written about a very specific frame in my life. In which I sat opposite of someone who I once loved and who once loved me (in a way) and realised now was the moment they started to hate me."
In her video “dance party” dodie explained:
"I wrote this song in sections.
I had random ideas and stuck them all together and eventually had verses, a bridge, and a chorus!"
She also went on to explain the evolution of the bridge of the song:
"There’s a sort of rap in the middle which at first I actually tried to speak it and then realised I should never try to rap lmao so I sang it instead."

Being awfully loud for an introvert
Get out of my room, smile wiped clean
Isn't it weird to be so mean?
I'm guessing that I've grown horns
I guess I'm human no more
I can tell I've rotted in your brain
You think I'm a crazy bitch
I craft my words to fit your head
'Cause no one listens to the dead
So maybe I will talk to you
The only way I know how to
Mhm, I've said my speech
Mhm, through sharpened teeth
You break the rules and spikes grow from your skin
Please let the devil in
A meter apart, we blankly stare
We shout in our heads, "Are you still in there?"
Well, this ends bad then, we knew it would
So we won't eat our words, 'cause they don't taste good
I'm guessing that I've grown horns
I guess I'm human no more
I can tell I've rotted in your brain
Oh, how easily passion twists
You think I'm a crazy bitch
A thousand words are left unsaid
'Cause no one listens to the dead
So maybe I will talk to you
The only way I know how to
Mhm, I've said my speech
Mhm, through sharpened teeth
You break the rules and spikes grow from your skin
Oh, I think it might be worth a try
Oh, am I ready to let this die?
Mhm, a monster's here
Mhm, you plug your ears
But hey, you might just listen to it sing
Please let the devil in
We won't eat our words
They don't taste so good
We won't eat our words
They don't taste so good
Look, we know that I've seen this before
High and mighty, at the top of your list
Adoring every move, now my rank is sinking
But we're both guilty of black or white thinking
And through my red eyes, you look pale
All of your scars are looking more like scales
Two ugly creatures, two sinister preachers
Blind to the past, like a couple of monsters
Just a couple of monsters
(We won't eat our words) so maybe I will talk to you
(They don't taste so good) the only way I know how to
(We won't eat our words) mhm, you've said your speech
Mhm, through sharpened teeth
(They don't taste so good) you break the rules and spikes grow from your skin
(We won't eat our words) oh, I think it might be worth a try
(They don't taste so good) oh, am I ready to let this die?
(We won't eat our words) mhm, a monster's here
Mhm, you plug your ears
(They don't taste so good) but hey, you might just listen to it sing
Please let the devil in
We won't eat our words
They don't taste so good
We won't eat our words
They don't taste so good
The song "Monster" by dodie is a melancholy reflection on the aftermath of a toxic relationship. The first verse begins with the singer asking her partner to describe how it feels to hurt someone who is an introvert, despite seemingly being the louder one in the relationship. She then wonders if she's grown horns and lost her humanity, feeling like she's completely rotted in her partner's brain. She also notes how passion twists and distorts everything and how crafting her words to fit the other person's perception is meaningless, as no one ever listens to the dead.
The second verse is about the final showdown between the two people. The singer is standing a meter apart from her partner, and the tension between them is palpable. They both know that the relationship is ending badly, and that they cannot take back the hurtful words they've said to each other. The singer realizes that both of them have acted like monsters in their own way, with their ugly flaws on full display.
Overall, "Monster" is a poignant and relatable song that explores the pain and disillusionment of a relationship's demise.

You've held power and authority over me
Adoring every move, now my rank is sinking

Your flaws are becoming more and more pronounced and unattractive
Two ugly creatures, two sinister preachers
We're both becoming monsters in each other's eyes
Blind to the past, like a couple of monsters
