Going Back Home
dr. feelgood/Dr Feelgood Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I bought Kerouac a beer and I roadied for the Stones
I know everybody here but I'm going home alone
Peter Pan's going to pee his pants when he learns we are through
You can go where you want to but I'm going back to blue

Going back to blue that's just something I thought I'd never do
You can go where you want to but I'm going back to blue
It's a mystery to me how this bloody thing went down
Ancient history to me since she blew out of this town
Full blast turned to half passed and then I just got numb
You can go where you want to but I'm going back to blue

Going back to blue that's just something I thought I'd never do
You can go where you want to but I'm going back to blue

Pain to Portland and back again
Send the bad news to Pendleton
I put my foot down but I slipped on the ice
I want to tell her that I love her
But I wont tell her twice

You can go where you want to but I'm going back to blue
Going back to blue that's just something I thought I'd never do

You can go where you want to but I'm going back to blue
You can go where you want to but I'm going back to blue

Overall Meaning

In the song "Going Back Home" by Dr. Feelgood, the lyrics describe a sense of nostalgia and longing for the past. The singer reminisces about his experiences on the road, including buying a beer for Jack Kerouac and working as a roadie for the Stones. Despite being familiar with the people and places around him, he is still alone and feels disconnected from his surroundings. He references the character of Peter Pan and suggests that he too would be shocked at the changes that have occurred since the singer has been away.

The chorus, "Going back to blue, that's just something I thought I'd never do," implies that the singer is returning to a sense of sadness or melancholy that he thought he had left behind. He acknowledges that it's a mystery to him how things ended up this way with his lost love, but it's now simply part of history. The singer talks about the long journey he took from Pain to Portland and back again, as well as sending bad news to Pendleton. He had intended to put his foot down but slipped on the ice, and now he regrets not telling his loved one that he loved her twice.

Overall, the song seems to be about the pain of realizing that you can never truly go back home, and that sometimes the road ahead is different from what you expected. It's a reflection on nostalgia, longing, and missed opportunity.

This is where punk came from. A superb live band that never got the success they deserved.

@timphillips9954

The best track on you tube? I'm not sure, but it's in the top three!

@colinpeck8257

Better than the Stones,
Status Quo, Dire Straights..
Underrated, great, honest musicians, will be playing them at my funeral..

@leeinwis

Not better than Dire Straights, you only remember there commercial stuff .

@Pierre-ml9ck

@@leeinwis Or QUO, and to say better than a band with 60 years selling out US baseball stadiums is ludicrous. They were damn good though. Stones are the greatest band ever (Beatles never played stadiums) so even being thought of with the Stones is magic.

@wolfgangflywheel4307

These guys were honest... Lee Brilleaux looks like he changed the oil in his car before walking on stage. What a great band!!!

@languagetruthandlogic3556

Too right - I have always copied the scruffy style - brilliant music!
