Thank you very much for this video and quick delivery! I felt compelled to add that I agree with everything else said, but not having my arms up helped me not suffocate in a crowd crush situation. It did cost a lot of my energy trying to buy a few inches so my chest could expand enough to breathe, but I honestly believe that it made a big difference as before that I felt like I was SURELY going to pass out from the weight of literally 10000 elbows in my ribs. This was at aftershock in 2018, sacramento.

Edit: I am a stupid. What he said by "arms up" is EXACTLY what I somehow instinctually did and I am almost 100 percent positive saved me from passing out. Yeah it's a bit confusing to say "arms up" when you're at a concert that usually means like, way up over your head lol. But no, exactly as the diagram shows, is exactly what I had to do. I'm extremely thankful my brain figured that out on the fly. Just be aware it's gonna be very tiring to keep your arms even a few inches from your ribs.

I've been to Lalapalooza and Coachella and still, the only crowd crush I've ever been in was when I was 13 at a punk show, where someone instigated a "falling down" mosh pit. Thank goodness for that giant Samoan dude who plucked me out of the mass of humans and put me safely on the other side of a 4' chain link fence

To all those lost in the 2022 Halloween crush in the Itaewon district, Seoul, Sth Korea.. may you rest in peace.

I was caught in a heavy crush with friends a few years ago after a New Year's fireworks display in the city of Melbourne, Australia. Struggling to hold up my friend's 8yo daughter in my aching arms, to keep her from being trampled in the crowd, whilst having to yell at idiots trying to push through us. A very scary night.

@h8GWBî - The 'idiots' I referred to were not simply caught up in the crush. They were a couple of louts who'd decided "fuck this.. we're getting out of here, and to hell with everyone else.." They pushed, shoved and elbowed their way through the packed crowd, not caring about anyone.

On a more serious note, I'd recommend putting very young children on a shoulder. Elderly folks should take extra heed of the 'leave early' advice, since the mid-crush advice isn't gonna help if someone has osteoporosis.

Without going too far into details, I was caught in a crowd crush at the RFK Stadium DC Metro station. There was a special event in Washington, and buses were arriving from all over the country, bringing tens of thousands of people. There were supposed to be extra trains, but the Metro system delayed running them for over an hour. At the subway station, both escalators (at each end of the platform) were headed DOWN. There was no way to exit the station via escalator, and no extra trains were coming to remove the growing crowd on the platform. As I and some friends came down the escalator, I could see that the platform was already dangerously overcrowded. Suddenly, halfway down to the platform, women began screaming and the first person panicked. A man began running back up the escalator, and I could tell a stampede was seconds away. I yelled at him, "STOP RIGHT THERE!" He reacted like he had been slapped, but he came out of his panic. Next, I yelled down to the people on the platform, "Somebody hit the emergency shutoff, THE RED BUTTON!" Someone did this, and a potentially deadly bit of mismanagement turned back into an ordinary subway station with a staircase at either end. I don't know how many lives my quick action saved, but I was mostly concerned with saving MINE, as the panicked, no-longer-fully-human mob of people would surely have trampled and probably killed me.

I was in a serious crush at a rock concert in the 80's and was in front against the barrier in front of the stage. We were begging security to get people to back up, but they didn't care. Some a few feet back were able to get lifted up and were carried above to the front and out, but we couldn't get out. I was telling them we couldn't breathe, but they didn't care. That's what was so bad. After the band came on people began pulling back and tho several people had fainted noone was killed. Last concert I ever went to

Fun (?) fact - fear of crowds and crowded places is actually a form of agoraphobia, not claustrophobia like most people assume. I have it and crowd crushes are my biggest fear, I always have to be able to see an exit (or at worst be near a window), and even watching this video has made my heart race a bit. I've always found crowd mapping an interesting subject especially because crowd behavior straddles that line between conscious and unconscious behavior. This is one of the calls I hope I never get as a coroner. Mass fatality incidents are bad enough, but this has always struck me as a particularly brutal death.

I’ve been working concert security for the past 10 years, often in the pit at the front of stage. I would never recommend being at the front, the crowd density usually doubles or even triples over the course of the night. All of the late comers keep pushing forward, forcing the front to condense. Have had to help many a smaller person over the barricade when they were getting too squished to breathe. While most venues have Emts on hand, do not expect them to be able to help you, they are probably already helping some dimwit who fell down a flight of stairs or jumped off a balcony.

It's also worth noting that AstroWorld had a horrific layout that trapped people between barriers. Layouts matter. Looking up the venue's layout ahead of time (if possible) is a good idea.

I'm my youth I went to many concerts. I can tell you first hand, when a crowd rushes the stage, it's very intense. I've had clothes ripped, cuts and bruises. Ontop of that it's suffocating. Stay safe✌️

I've never been in a full-on crush, but I have found myself walking away from a Main Stage area just as a headline act starts playing and suddenly it's bloody hard to move through/against the crowd who instantly all want to be right in the spot you just left, like trying to swim against a strong tide. The experience wasn't alarming enough to panic me into feeling that I'd get crushed, but it did give me some hint of what that might be like. In this instance I was able to "swim sideways against the current" until I reached the side of the crowded walkway, and I basically "sheltered in place" next to a rubbish bin for a couple of minutes until the flow of people died down.

I was pretty young then, these days I prefer the "to avoid a crowd crush, don't be in a crowd" advice. :)

@Brooke G Dr J. was spot on, you must try and remain calm and do whatever you can to reach a less congested spot. Although as pointed out in the video, definitely try and avoid choke points like corridors, doorways and stairwells where panicked people will inevitably pile up. If you panic and rush blindly at an exit, you're likely to get caught in that pile-up; safety might lie in a different direction, or it might indeed be best to try and get out as quickly as possible. You can't make those sort of judgements with any kind of assurance if you're panicked. I'm just glad that I'm around average height, an ex-partner of mine is 4'6", she was understandably very nervous about large crowds.

I watched an indepth vid by Swoop here on YT about the Travis Scott Astroworld crowd crush and what you describe, leaving as the main stage acts were coming on and people were flooding in, was a huge contributor to that deadly crush (along with barriers and other issues). It's terrifying. Glad you had a plan and did well.

Thank you for this video. I had no idea that there were actual steps to help survive these other than don’t panic. Fascinating Horror has done several videos on crowd crushes, to the point where the comments are now all about folks being much more aware of the dangers. Crowds have always made me nervous, this video helps deal with that.

I remember when I was a kid, my mom took me and my siblings to a convention center. I don't remember if it was a health, police, or Hispanic fair event. What I did know is that the crowd waiting to enter was huge and there was no organization not even a line to the entrance, just a big blob of people. We were way close to one another and thanks to my size, I was only as tall as half on an adult. I don't blame my mom for this for even she didn't know this was about to happen but when they opened the doors, people surged forward way too fast. We got separated and I was scared as I felt I was being crushed. Luckily some people had enough sense and pulled me and my siblings above the crowd. The guy held me above until pass the entrance before he dropped me off to the side where it was safe and then ran to wherever he was going. Same happened to my siblings. My mom found is a couple minutes later in a panic and was thankful we were alright. I haven't thought about that day until I hear stories about crowd crushes and then it comes back to me.

I messed up years ago and watched the Station Night Club fire video and it literally scared me for life! I haven't looked at a bar or any small space ever the same. I am always aware of the exits and I stay close to them. I also stay on the perimeter of the crowd, never near the middle and plan to go the opposite way of the crowd if something happens.

I did the exact same thing like five or six years ago. I don't consider myself easily shaken but that video ruined my life. I worry constantly about traffic flow and blind alleys and bottle necks in subways and train stations while I commute to and from work every day. I have looked at lines for concerts and events I've paid to go to and turned around and left if I don't think the venue has enough exits. And, most notably, probably similar to you, I've watched so many videos about crowd crush. So many.

Crowd crushes are similar to what one experiences when crushed by an anaconda: every time one breathes out the snake tightens its grip, in the end one simply can no longer inhale enough to sustain life. The same happens when one is in a tight group of people.

When crowds panic to get outside (like in a nightclub fire) they typically try to exit wherever they came in. Identify an alternate exit and go for that, not the front door.

I was at a club concert where the band was over an hour late. After a while, somehow the fluency of the crowd directed us towards front stage and I started to get crushed up against the stage. Luckily for me, a bouncer on the stage lifted me out! No injuries, but it was definitely painful to my ribs area. It wasn't a big venue so I couldn't imagine anything beyond that!

Thank you for info on surviving crowd crushes. I try not to put myself in this situation but have found myself in a couple and one was with my 81yr old Mom who used a cane to walk; it was very scary as my Mom could not move as fast as the crowd around us so I stayed rt next to my Mom with my arms out to protect her as the crowd flowed around us. I also know that if this had been a true panic situation and not just a mass exodus from a Toby Keith concert, we would have been trampled. Lesson I learned is to let Mom watch her favorite stars on TV in the safety of her own home!

While I haven't been in an actual crowd crush, I was in a situation where I had to turn around, and make my way through the crowd to a less congested area. This occurred at Cal Jam II, at the since demolished Ontario Motor Speedway. Late at night when Aerosmith took the stage, lots of people were trying to get up close to the stage, and the area I was in was packed like sardines. Shoulder to shoulder, and you had no space in front or behind you to move around. There was approximately 350,000 people packed into the infield of the racetrack, if that gives some clarification. That's an experience I did once, but would never be part of a crowd that size again. Love your channel, keep up the great work !

I thought by "arms up" he was saying "arms straight up like you're reaching for the sky" which is absolutely the wrong thing to do. I realized what he meant when I saw the cartoon. Fist in opposite hand, just above the belly button, elbows out wide. The arms are incredibly strong in this position and it protects the space your ribcage needs to expand. I'm saying this from experience.

Yeah, "arms up" is a very misleading phrase. I thought exactly the same as you. I wonder if "elbows out" is slightly better, though that doesn't include the important aspect of first in opposite hand. Is there a term for the stance they're describing? This was a great video! I think it would be awesome if you could cover this more and if you could find footage of locations that experienced a crowd crush and any damage that occurred to infrastructure or more detailed info on how people were injured.

I always thought most injuries were due to people falling and then having a "stampede" happen. Imagine if a viewer is ever helped with this info!

I was once in an almost crush. We were waiting in “line” to enter edc, which wasn’t a line at all but more of a blob to get through the tiny little choke point of a gate. People at the back were getting pissed that it was taking so long and started telling people to just shove in. They were screaming, shoving and pushing people forward as hard as they could. I literally couldn’t breath for a few seconds and also started panicking.

Once I found my breath I started screaming “STOP” to them as loudly as I could. Luckily the temporary barrier fell over once the push had enough force and we got through unharmed. Probably one of the scariest moments of my life. I’m not sure what would have happen if it was a permanent wall rather than a little metal fence that we were pushed against. Took a couple hours for me to stop shaking and be able to enjoy the night after that.

The next night we went through the same entrance and they had set up hundreds of metal chain fences, forming an actual LINE to prevent it happening again.

Ive been been in large crowds, mosh pits before and being in a situation were there is litterly people up against your shoulders and all around you is scary but staying calm, hydrated, and taking in big breaths and having an exit strategy is the best way to stay good and heathy in a concert or event.

I hate crowds, and always try to stay as close to the exit as I can when I go anywhere where I have to sit for any period of time. This just confirms my paranoia. Regardless, thank you for the information.

I almost got crushed at a music festival years ago, I got jammed against a turnstile with a crowd behind me after the main arena didn’t open at the time expected and a main act was within minutes of starting.
A police officer on the other side of the turnstile literally reefed me out and over it, I don’t even know how he did it. I think he must’ve seen the fear of death in my eyes. I believe he saved my life that day.
I know after he did it I remember thanking him for saving me but I wish I remembered what he looked like or even his name so I could’ve thanked him properly

As a teenager at my first show I put myself right in front of the stage, not knowing for a slender female that was as bad plan.
The moment the band came on I had my ribs smashed into the metal barrier, and the few seconds before the pressure let up were terrifying. I really thought I’d be suffocated before anyone noticed....and this was a small venue with a relatively small crowd.

Music was and is a big part of my life, but I’ll never willingly be in that position again.

I love your videos! Great work! I’ve often wondered if chanting something like “stop” or “calm” and getting the people around you to chant with you, until the whole crowd is chanting… might that knock awareness back into people’s panicked senses? Chanting is soothing and rhythmic and repetition would catch attention. I mean, remember that scene from Finding Nemo? There’s a lot of power in chanting!

I’ve also wondered if training people to do this, the way we train people to stop, drop, and roll, would be helpful. I know lots of people don’t remember to do this, especially in a panic. But at least if you heard someone chanting stop, you’d be familiar with it and know you should stop and chant too.

The last time I went to a massive gathering, it was so poorly organized that we ended up standing in a dense crowd for long over an hour. It occurred to me that any loud sound could lead to a deadly running panic. I knew about running panics having once been in a malfunctioning elevator. But that's another story. After that crowd experience, I decided that I would never attend a large event again. Never.

Yikes. Imagine what it is like if you're in a wheelchair? I know special events and concerts may have special seating, but clearly a crowd crush can happen anywhere.

I’ve been to more live events than I can remember as my long time bf was a professional sound engineer and I often went with him to shows. At one concert event, at a large club on the East Coast, I genuinely believed I might die or be gravely injured. The show was grossly over-sold and packed beyond belief. It was so bad, people filled the stairwells between the first and second floors, a major fire violation. Typically, I watched shows from behind the sound board or in the sound booth, but I was a fan of the headliner and wanted to watch them from as close as possible to the stage. Before the band went on, I squeezed my way through the crowd to get as close to the stage as I could. As soon as they ran on stage and picked up their instruments, everyone came down the stairs and pushed into the crowd on the main floor - total crush situation. I was being crushed from all directions with my clothes and long hair being being pulled in every direction and ripped. The “arms up” advice in this video happened instinctually; I brought my arms up around my chest in an attempt to protect my ability to breathe. My feet weren’t even on the floor; I was like a piece of debris in a trash compactor. Their were people standing on top of the bars to escape the crowd and luckily, a couple guys saw my distress and pulled me up and out of the throng. It was INSANE! My shirt was torn up and I lost large clumps of hair but at least that’s all I lost. Very scary!

It's amazing how few people you need to make a crush, given the right circumstances. I was in an airport (I think Heathrow) once and there was a double escalator set up where two escalators ran parallel to each other, both going up, followed by a small landing and 180° turn onto another two escalators going up. Except they had blocked off one of the two upper escalators for maintenance. So everyone from the left escalator stepped off on the landing, and then had to try and integrate with traffic from the right hand side escalator. And of course the landing was only big enough for maybe ten people. There were probably only thirty people on the escalators in total, but the bottleneck was bad enough that one woman fell. Which of course meant that everyone behind her had to try and stop, which you can't do at a moment's notice on an escalator. Fortunately someone managed to grab her and pull her to the side. The staff were thoroughly disinterested when people told them what was happening 🤦🏻‍♀️

If possible go up. Get on top of something. Table, barrier, speaker whatever. It’s gotten me out of a couple tricky crowd situations in the past. Especially in small spaces above the crowd has more air.

I was at a Cramps concert in the early 90’s. It had a couple of hundred people but I was at the stage. There were sawhorses up that had pinch points in them. Need to say, I had my hands on those points and the crowd started to push and I had my right ring finger pinched and crushed. Luckily I got my finger out with some decent damage. It could’ve been much worse! Thanks for the great videos!

Crowd crush was part of what lead to the many deaths in the Coconut Grove fire in Boston, MA as well as the Station Night Club fire. People couldn't get out the doors the crush was so great.

At a concert once I wasn't being crushed but I felt like there wasn't enough oxygen in the air. Idk if that's a real thing that can happen but I wasn't having anxiety or anything just felt like the air didn't have enough O2.

I was a teenager in the 1970s and went to a Lot of concerts. Only 2 or 3 "general admission" ..kind of scary when you have 20000 people at an arena. Lucky, I was never near a crush but I have a couple of friends who barely escaped. I went to a concert when I was 50, told my 2 friends to get away from any mosh pit a as quickly as possible. Sure enough, large mosh pit that got violent. Looking for escape routes all the time. Good information on your video.

Crowd crush happened at The Station nightclub on the evening of February 20, 2003, in West Warwick, Rhode Island, United States, killing 100 people and injuring 230. The fire was caused by pyrotechnics set off by the tour manager of the evening's headlining band, Great White, which ignited flammable acoustic foam in the walls and ceilings surrounding the stage. People fleeing for the single unlocked door converged into a bottleneck and eventually no one could escape. Horrific. Best Regards

Wonderful topic and timely information. Considering that large crowds are coming back, and the newly discovered selfish and uncaring national attitude, the potential for crowd crush are more likely now than ever. The Station Fire was way more deadly because of crowd crush.

I'm a steward part time and a few weeks ago I was in the middle of a festival at the mixer stand, a colleague on top of the stand had seen some sort of panic in and amongst this crowd of 17000 people, claiming someone had a medical emergency, me being the idiot I was decided to take one steward and run into that crowd trying to move people while using a lot of energy to get to that person, lucky about half way in I realised I was struggling to breath and starting to feel dizzy, I realised I had made a huge mistake and error of judgment so I started to make my way down the side of the crowd and luckily just about got out and into a less crowded area, I got to medics and told them the situation so they then went in. I was sat outside behind main stage for about half a hour feeling not so well I was pale and confused. It could of been a lot worse but its made me realise the dangers of the job I do not just that but also the fact is if you was actually in that situation where it was all chaos it would be seriously scary.

2000 warped tour exhausted and dehydrated when dropkick murphys came on crowd surged forward. for a moment legit thought I was going down and was going to be trampled to death as everyone surged forward and backward. go with the flow is great way to put it as i tried to make it to the edge while getting knocked around. I always try to stay on the edge of huge crowds now.

One of my personal fears, along with stampedes and mobs. I generally try avoiding crowds whenever possible but can't avoid them entirely. Hell, just having the power go out at Wal-Mart brings a crowd of customers to the front. Fires can happen, panic can happen, getting crowded into back areas at a store when a tornado siren goes off, etc.
By 11 my kid had picked up that whenever I go anywhere, there's 2 things I look for at entry: exits and bathrooms. Further in I start noting fire alarms. I always think about the scene in Stephen King's Insomnia where the mom keeps her and her son seated when crowds rush the exits, to let the people thin out while she finds a less occupied exit.

crowd crushes have always been one of the most fascinating disasters to me. the idea of humans just becoming herd animals because there are too many for individual minds to make a difference. the dynamics of it are so interesting. i would definitely love to see these covered here.

also one of my big fears because im already claustrophobic as well as nervous around people.

I've been in one.. whilst holding an 8yo in my arms to keep them from being trampled. Part of what makes it so terrifying is that even people just a few metres away from where you are being crushed, can be utterly unaware of what's happening to those nearby, and may therefore still be pushing forward, making things even worse.

If you do get knocked down try to land o your side and try to pull your legs up into a fetal position. This will give you breathing room, Know all the exits and head for the one that others are not heading towards. Most people will try to leave the same way they came in. Find an exit that is away from that area.

Large crowds scare me honestly, the worst thing is how quick they can form, you might not even notice and suddently you are in a big hall with thousands of other people at a convention or something else. It doesnt even matter if you know where the exits are cause you aint gonna be able to decide. A paniced crowd does not act smart or rational, you can argue with it as much as you can argue with the sea or a tornado.

I've been at many shows in the "mosh-pit" and usually the norm is always help a fallen brother or sister! And for the most part it does happen!
but in those few times where drunkeness and stupidity meet? Well that usually leads toi disaster? I was at one show where the crowd for whatever reason started pushing purward and the people at the front of the stage were being pushed into the high barriers they put at these events now,well thanks to the band and their singer ,he stopped the show because he could see the rush begin and went over the speakers for people to stop, calm down ,and slowly walk back making a sure fire problem stop! Many of the people in the front were pulled out and thankfully no one was hurt, but you hear of these things going wrong because of panicky people!
