Bug Eyes
dredg Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Bring back those good old days
Nothing feels right
Nothing ever goes my way
I threw my future away

Now I'll walk alone out here in the cold
Wandering astray
Where's my future
Gonna need a home

You'd expect the same now wouldn't you
Wouldn't you

Your journey back to birth
Is haunting you
It's haunting you
Your departure from the Earth
Is haunting you
It's haunting you

Only those who accept
Will find that acceptance in return
We have been trimmed down like hedges
Told just to sit

And wilt and spit at each other from a distance
With constant resistance from you
Gonna need a home
You'd expect the same now wouldn't you
Wouldn't you

Your journey back to birth
Is haunting you
It's haunting you
Your departure from the Earth
Is haunting you
It's haunting you

It's been ten years strong
That's much too long
It's time to do something good for my health
Time to do something good myself

It's been ten years strong
That's much too long
It's time to do something good for my health
Time to do something good myself

I've wasted all of this time
I've wasted all of this time

Your journey back to birth
It's haunting you
It's haunting you
Your departure from the Earth

It's haunting you
It's haunting you
Your journey back to birth
It's haunting you

It's haunting you
Your departure from the Earth

It's haunting you
It's haunting you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of dredg's song Bug Eyes seem to be about feeling lost, stuck, and unable to move forward in life. The song opens with a desire to go back to a time when things were simpler and easier ("bring back those good old days"), but acknowledges that nothing feels right in the present, and nothing ever goes the singer's way. The line "I threw my future away" suggests that the singer made choices they regretted, and it is this sense of regret and lost opportunity that haunts them. The song goes on to explore ideas of acceptance and resistance, suggesting that those who are able to accept their circumstances will find acceptance in return. However, there is also a sense of frustration with the world and with oneself, and a desire to break free from the limitations that are holding the singer back.

The repeated lines "your journey back to birth is haunting you" and "your departure from the Earth is haunting you" seem to refer to the idea of life being a journey from birth to death. The idea of this journey being "haunting" suggests that the singer is afraid of what will happen when they reach the end of their own journey, and that they are preoccupied with thoughts of what might have been. The final lines of the song ("It's been ten years strong, that's much too long, it's time to do something good for my health, time to do something good myself") suggest a renewed commitment to making positive changes and moving forward in life.

Overall, Bug Eyes is a powerful and thought-provoking song that explores themes of regret, frustration, and a desire for change. The haunting imagery of birth and death adds a sense of urgency to the song, and the repeated lines create a sense of obsession and fixation on the part of the singer. The song's ultimate message seems to be one of hope and renewal, with the singer acknowledging that it's time to take action and do something good for themselves.

I listened to this song for the first time 12 years ago.
Back in the day i didn't understood the lyrics, but the music felt like a nostalgia knife going directly into my soul.
Now that im 33 years, i really think the lyrics fit into me.
Dredg makes me think about my life.
This first verse is like a mirror to me:

Bring back those good old days
Nothing feels right, nothing ever goes my way
I threw my future away
Now I'll walk alone, out here in the cold
Wandering astray
Where's my future?

Thanks Dredg, for creating music that brings me back to those good old days every time i listen to it.
Please, come to Mexico before my departure from the earth...

This has been my birthday week and this song has been ringing in my head and I haven't had a chance to play it due to work commitments and being mentally exhausted to enjoy and cherish the sounds to move my heart.

This song I hold near to my heart from the message I have interpreted as being the awakening of the true self and seeing what life is about and what is most important to find connection.

Sadly, life passes us so quickly and we lose the focus of the journey and to enjoy the innocence and celebration of the greatest gift we ever have, life.

At times life is very difficult and challenging, but it is up to us to embrace change and to make this journey a blessed one and to ensure that we find happiness and attainment, even if we are alone.

This new year of my life I will focus on my personal connection for growth on all arenas, omit negativity, and to find the blessings in each day to celebrate and enjoy to make my circle happy and balanced to influence others.

Blessings to the band Dredg, and to whomever reads this first post of my new year of life to celebrate.

They're awesome humans, on top of that. I was lucky to meet and eat with them before a show in Houston about 10 years ago. Really down to earth and friendly dudes. We shared Chinese and then they walked me into the venue with them so I wouldn't have to wait in line :)

I saw Dredg open for the Deftones in 2002. Had no idea who they were (was there for Deftones). They blew my mind with a 40 minute set. Became an instant fan. Still listening in 2022. Such a beautiful band.

@jgonsuron

Pay no attention to the man in the corner. The GOD LEVEL drummer that not only drives the track, but plays a piano WHILE DRUMMING. And watch while he breaks a stick during the shoot, dumps it, and keeps time. Dino Campanella is next level mastery.

@kingprone7846

it looks at 3:50 like the bass guitarist got a broken string too
