Colorblind
dresden dolls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

i love you like a brother
and i love you like a child
and i love you like a lover
and i love you dumb and colorblind
and i love you like a mother
even after all you've done
and i love you like no other
but i know
you're not the one...

and i loved you in bright orange
and in violet and in green
and i loved you in such colors
as your eyes have never ever seen
and i loved the way you acted
but your one trick pony's dead
and i loved you unprotected
but you only love in
red

i know its dark for good
i never listen when i should
you only see in black and white
so go on back to your own kind
and i'll go back to mine

i love you like a brother
and i love you like a child
and i love you like a lover
and i love you dumb and colorblind
and i love you like a mother
even after all she's done

and i love you like no other
but i know youre not the one...

Overall Meaning

The Dresden Dolls' song "Colorblind" is a raw and emotional exploration of a complicated and troubled love. The lyrics express the singer's conflicting feelings of love and frustration towards their partner. The first stanza reveals the various ways in which the singer loves their partner, including "like a brother," "like a child," "like a lover," and "dumb and colorblind" - suggesting a deep, blind, and unrequited love. However, the singer also acknowledges that their partner is not "the one," leading to a sense of resignation and sadness.

The second stanza continues the theme of love expressed through color imagery, with the singer describing their love for their partner in various shades of orange, violet, and green. However, the stanza then takes a darker turn when the singer declares that their partner's "one trick pony's dead," suggesting that they are tired of their partner's repetitive behaviors. The final lines of the stanza reveal the partner's love is fleeting, as they "only love in red," suggesting a limited and superficial love.

The final stanza is more candid and direct, with the singer telling their partner to go back to their own kind and indicating that they themselves will return to their own people. This suggests that the relationship is not sustainable and that the two individuals are not compatible in the long run. However, the chorus repeats the various ways in which the singer loves their partner, indicating that despite their struggles and differences, there is still a deep love and caring between them.

Overall, "Colorblind" is a powerful and introspective portrayal of a complex and troubled love. The use of color imagery and repetition emphasizes the intensity of the emotions involved, while the abrupt shifts in tone convey the confusion and complications of the relationship.

@VivicaHemlock

The way i interpret this song is that she loves him in so many different ways because hes the world to her. "you only love in red." could mean that he only lusts for her...or that the only way he can show his love for her is to lash out at her.

@kierstencreates958

Agreed, it could also portray blood, if there is violence involved.
