I first learned of this excellent dish in 1985 on Lefkada at Harrylou's Souvlaki by the Monastery. It was then and still is one of the best tasting in all of Greece.

Sovlaki is a simple dish, but very hard to duplicate. No one outside of Greece can make it as good as people in Greece do.

Everyone I know from the island who have left...come back to Harry's, because they can't get good souvlaki outside of Greece.

I searched in Athens for a week to find the best. After eating at several places, I found Sofia's by Victoria Square to be the best.

In Tarpon Springs, Florida there is a small stand on the pier behind the Greek Island Import and Export Shop that comes very close to the flavor.

I used to try to make Greek Souvlaki, but it's never compares to what I have eaten in Greece. Now I just try to make good Souvlaki.

I can eat 5 or 6 if I don't eat all the bread and potatas and drink all the Mythos.

The traditional method, Placed on bread and wrapped in parchment, is the best. The juices soak into the bread.

The first historian,, Herodotus, wrote about Souvlaki

Yes, I will try it and let you know!
I have discussed this with my extended family on Lefkada. We think it may be the way pigs are raised in Greece. Much better meat than other places.

Also I think it may be the wood used for charcoal.

What is the charcoal you use made from?
Is it Olive wood?

@Nick Arhithya I've been eating the non restaurant souvlaki since the 80's. Pork, chicken and lamb, at restaurants, I believe have always been available since then.

Now certain Middle Eastern peoples do not eat pork and since Greece was under Turkish rule for ~400 years, until the 19th century, lamb probably was more common.
Almost every kantina, roadside stop, etc is only going to have pork or chicken in the last 37 years from my travels in country.

Relax...these people are trying to save and share a tradition as they experienced it.

Apparently you're not in Greece if you don't have your own personal knowledge of this food in Greece.

Pork , chicken, lamb, doesn't matter and isn't the point of the video.

Fantastic Video. I realised how all these years I had been doing it wrong. Not the marinating, not the 1/4 turn technique, but the ouzo for "orexi" and the wine for digestion. Just joking. Well done guys.
