A couple of years later, the passionate funk drummer began to abuse his computer as a musical instrument, enabling him to realise his musical ideas without a band.

His sound is mainly influenced by early Chicago techno & acid house, Wolfgang Voigt's Studio 1 series, as well as vintage video games. In 2002, Singapore, he released his first 12", as head and producer of the subversive performer-collective daftN0!ze, a blend of raw funk beats and rave elements.

He runs the monthly radio show synapse.fm together with two friends for over eight years and the show has gained local reputation due to a wide choice of crazy artists and dance music styles.

Stefan recently moved to Basle due to his job as postproduction engineer and sound designer and works for various commercial customers all over Switzerland.

The Technik Museum Sinsheim in Germany has both the Concorde and the Russian Tupolev Tu-144 displayed on poles. You can look at them from a distance next to one another, from underneath close up, or climb the stairs and go inside. The entire museum is worth the visit.

The Cold War is definitely my favorite period of history. Yes the Cold War was filled with conflict, division, and bloodshed but it gave superpowers an excuse to advance in technology. To outdo each other. It's like watching a tennis match seeing two countries go back and forth between each other. I mean just look at the Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984 Olympics as an example of the Cold War. The Moscow 1980 emblem had a communist star, the mascot was the national animal, and we boycotted the games. Then Los Angeles 1984 came around and the US went all "AMERICA, F YEAH" on it with an emblem with stars in the most patriotic way possible, a mascot that was the national animal in the most patriotic way possible with a Lady Liberty torch and Uncle Sam hat, and the Soviets boycotted the games.

Being of both Russian and Cuban descent (my mom's side left Cuba years before the revolution because of Batista and his treatment of the lower classes), I've made it a goal to learn about the cultures/histories of the countries of my heritage and two of those countries being Cuba and Russia, I learned a lot about the Cold War. Whether you like history or not, can't help but admit that it's incredible to go back in time in a certain period, learn of achievements at the time, and see how much we've changed since then.

"The Irony of Fate" Sounds like the name of a great classic Soviet movie (1976): Ирония судьбы. But another irony of the Concorde and Tu-144 crashes (being 27 years apart but only a couple of kilometres from each other) is that they were both the subject of cover-ups by the French.

The TU-144 didn't have as good flying dynamics as Concorde and, while performing its display (in very overcast weather) the Tu-144 had to take avoiding action while encountering a French jet - sent up to take photos of the Tu-144 while it performed. No one thought to tell the Tu-144 flight crew that a French Mirage was occupying the same air space and, when the Russian pilot was suprised to encounter it, the avoiding action took the TU-144 outside the operating parameters of the aircraft.

The Concorde crash in 2000 was subject to a massive cover-up by both Air France and the French Government. Although the metal strip (left on the runway by a recently departed DC-10) is ofted cited as the sole cause of the accident, that particular Concorde was already in some difficulty before it even hit the DC-10 fragment on the runway - due to very bad maintence by Air France, and also because of very poor decision-making/choices made by the Concorde flight crew on the day. John Hutchinson's expert detailed analysis of the crash is probably the most impartial and credible account of exactly why the crash happened.

My father flew on both (i have only flwon on Concorde and only 3 times) and he was terrified the first time he flew on the Russian one, because of the noise and because some bits were made of wood in the passengers area, like the tablets and harm rest , which seemed really rustic but also really odd for a modern airplane. But one thing was sure, the food was apparently far better on the russian one than on BA or Airfrance and the cabin crew was far nicer too.

There was a documentary on tv here in the UK on what Concorde was like a few years back. The type of people that flew on it was pretty varied. People that flew all the time, occasional and people who saved up and made it part of the holiday. It flew alot, for a long time and with two different companies, someone must have been buying tickets

It was a very short flight but at a price the average person could afford, so anyone could have a shot on concorde. It was like a little joy ride on a supersonic plane 😊

I once was taken to new york and back to London by my boss on concord so i didn't pay for it (that's 2) and i once had my regular flight cancelled on a NYC Paris flight (i had a business class ticket which i had upgraded to a first class, and when the flight was cancelled we were proposed an upgrade on Concorde by Airfrance for an additional 6 000 francs. I had to go back to Paris and the company agreed to cover half of it so i took it. I would have never spent 25 000 francs on a flight !
But yes i did work for a very wealthy company.

I have flown on both the Concorde and the Tu144. The interior of the Tu-144 was loud, sure, but it was quite possible to carry on conversations and the plane was quite comfortable. The windows were much larger than the tiny Concord widows and made for quite a view when at altitude.

@John Valentine Well, first of all, if we look the noise levels in the Tu-144s cabin, which were in the range of 90-95 dB [1] versus a normal conversation, which is 60 dB [2]. (Ever tried talking next to a running Harley?) Secondly, you are correct, the Tu-144s windows were larger than Concordes, (But given that windows in aviation pose a structural vulnerability, is that really such a good thing?) Now, I must admit; I've never flown on either, though my grandfather has flown on Concorde. (Make of that what you will.)

Frankly speaking, not Tu-144 but Tu-144D is the Soviet Concorde. The latter had made freight flights for several years but they decided not to reopen passenger flights after Brezhnev's death. The technical experience was later used to produce Tu-160 bomber.

Spoiler alert from the Aviation Maintenance Industry. The MAX is a very good plane. The mishaps were pilot error. The crashes revolve around a single switch on the cockpit. It has been around since the original 737. The different instruments mean pilots needed some additional training that was never done by those airlines. Most of the commotion is by media not understanding it.

The first TUPOLEV TU-144 which flew on December 31, 1968 had the ogival delta wings like Concorde and was indeed very similar. This is where all the espionage accusations came from western media. It was a "proof of concept" model which was the TU-144A. The Soviets realized that this aircraft, which flew very well, could in no way be certified for civilian passenger transport because of its very high approach and landing speed. After a few test flights the Soviets came to the conclusion that ANOTHER different plane had to be built, the TU-144A was scraped and they started to build the others, the TU-144B and after the C we know today with double delta wings and which took into account the approach and landing procedures and patterns. Westerners (French and English) came to the same conclusions with the first Concorde prototype, ANOTHER PLANE HAD TO BE MADE. The French agreed to build another aircraft but the British did not, the McMillan government had already canceled the TSR2 supersonic tatical bomber project (which used the same Olympus Concorde engines and plenty of technology to be applid in Concorde) and the Harold Wilson government continued to reorganize (and partly nationalize) the entire British aviation industry with the cancellation of many ongoing and operational projects. For the English a new Concorde was not possible. They had to continue with the Concorde as it was in the state it was, with all its faults and problems, or else cancel it as the English wanted. It was decided to continue the Concorde project as is the first prototype.

The Boeing SST full scale mockup used to be in a museum near Orlando. I remember seeing the tail sticking out of the building as a kid on trips to DisneyWorld. In the 90s/00s I would drive up to see space shuttle launches at Kennedy Space center. On one such trip I saw parts of the SST fuselage chopped up in a storage yard right next to the road near the space center. It was pretty sad to see.

Back in 1971, I was stationed in Berlin close to the Wall and about a mile from Schoenefeld Airport over in East Berlin. Our work site had a 100' tall tower with a deck at the top, so we had a pretty decent view of Schoenefeld. When the Paris Air Show took place, the Russians flew the Tu-144 and the Mi-14 (Homer) helicopter into Berlin on the way to Paris. We got a good look at both aircraft. The 144 was a pretty plane, and it was one of the few Russian airliners I saw in Europe during my Army days. I did see a Tu-134 from the Bulgarian airline at Frankfurt Rhein-Main once. Interesting times.

Thanks for this video. I didn't know all that about the Russian supersonic plane, especially that it operated only for one year while Concorde operated 27 years!
I lived near an airport and I remember Concorde was allowed to land at only a few airports - too noisy! Of course, it gulped fuel like crazy - just when oil costs were rising like crazy. It was the wrong time for such a plane. I wonder if it would have done better today.

TU 144 remained in commercial business till 1983 and for research purposes till 1999. It is not as bad it sounds in this video. Infact, NASA chose TU144 over Concord for its Eclipse mission. The engineering and maneuverability was much better of TU144 than the Concord.

NASA Chose the TU144 probably because it was available, all the Concordes were in use. As for the TU144 being Engineered better.. yeah, ok, that's why they had so many mechanical issues and two crashed? - Remember the French Concorde crash wasn't due to any failure on the plane, but a scrap bit of metal dropped of an American DC10. (If memory serves)

Well, this plane was intended for those who needed urgent transportation at affordable price, not for luxury fancy-shmancy time-killing in flight. In modern planes you don't really get much luxury either, in fact, I was very surprised by how tight the rows are packed in economy class nowadays (as compared to what it was when I first boarded a plane in 1988). It is even tighter than in a bus now! Comparison Tu-144 vs Concorde is the same as economy class vs 1st class, there is no surprise here, it was intended to be that way.

Seems like the fix for the MAX death dives would be simple enough. Fix the sensor(s), make adjustments, find an open area to perform a huge battery of tests. But alas Boeing is SO CHEAP they want to just say things are ok without proving it and putting the divers back in the air! Fly on one of these death divers? - no way. A shining example of US Corporate greed.

If you went driving out on the highway with known bald tires and no brakes and killed a family on the road we are criminally liable.

On top of that the software was designed in a way that the instruments from the pilot and copilot didnt check what the other was doing. Next, Boeing told everyone that you could fly this plane with standard 737 certification so no one would need to be retraining, then they change some systems. Then we have the faa having the companies self-certify whether or not planes are safe to fly or not.

I honestly believe if the designers at Tupolev took a bit more time with the 144, I am certain it would have been a game changer. Because Concorde had 'super-cruise' this allowed it to have a decent useable range that the 144 lacked.

A new modification of the Tu-144D (D - Dalniy - rus. long distance) was in development. The engines and the aircraft with them were developed and tested. This aircraft successfully completed a pilot flight Moscow - Khabarovsk (~ 6140 km). But due to the accident of the fuel line in another experimental flight (this is mentioned in the video), the top management decided to close the project before its completion, and with it the operation of serial Tu-144. Subsequently, engines for the Tu-160 were created on the basis of engines for the Tu-144D, which were also installed on the Tu-144LL (LL - Letaushaya Laboratoriya - rus. flying laboratory) for NASA experiments.

Of course they could've improved the design to match or exceed the Concorde's performance but that would really be a mistake because SSTs are pointless. They cost far too much to operate, generate unbearable noise pollution and the speed benefit over transonic airliners is negligeable all things considered.

One book I read said that the essential part of the supersonic ability of Concord was the sophistication of its adjustable air intakes which the Russians just could not match. The testing was amazing and I seem to remember there was a story of a Hustler pilot in the cockpit going ashen when they slammed the throttles off whilst supersonic. He said that would have been the last things they would have done in his aircraft.

TUPOLEV TU-144 and CONCORDE: The two planes are fundamentally different. The TU-144 had double delta wings which allowed the installation of "slats" all over the leading edge of the wing which was straight. Those of the Concorde were in ogival delta which would make the installation of "slats" too complicated if not impossible. On the TU-144 having the engines close to the fuselage and a wingspan of 28.8 meters (compared to 25.6 for the Concorde) this made it possible to have the significantly larger flaps helped by the ailerons which acted as flaperons. All these devices combined with the retractable "canard" wings of the TU-144 allowed it to have take-off speeds but especially in approach and landings significantly lower than those of Concorde and which made it possible to make the approach circuits and landing integrated with the other planes which was not the case with Concorde. The big problem of Concorde was even its very high speed to take off which generated an enormous energy of projection during a burst of a tire. Another serious design flaw was the very great exposure of the kerosene tanks to projections from the landing gear were even the cause of many incidents but three accidents with significant leakage of kerosene, two in 1979 (one in Dakar and the other in Washington/Dulles). In November 1981, the American National transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sent a letter of concern to the French BEA that included safety recommendations for Concorde. This communiqué was the result of the NTSB's investigations of four Air France Concorde incidents during a 20-month period from July 1979 to February 1981. The NTSB described those incidents as "potentially catastrophic," because they were caused by blown tyres during takeoff. During its 27 years in service, Concorde had about 70 tyre- or wheel-related incidents, seven of which caused serious damage to the aircraft or were potentially catastrophic. The most serious accident was in July 2000 in Gonesse (France) that caused 113 deaths and marked the end of the aircraft's prestige. On the TU-144 such an accident would be impossible or would not have had the same consequences, the landing gear, parts of the engine nacelles and the critical places were made with titanium, but at the time titanium metallurgy was unknown in Western Europe, reason why all the structure of the Concorde was in steel and aluminum this material is very light but very fragile to the shocks. Engines are also different, those of TU-144 were double flux turbo-fans, those of Concorde are simple turbo-jets. On landing, its very high speed implied a very special approach and landing procedure, it was necessary to create a vacuum in front of Concorde, which prevented several large aircrafts from landing. The French and British governments paid the airport for the loss of revenue for each plane prevented from landing because the arrival of Concorde, which amounted to extremely expensive operation. Normally this too high speed on take-off but especially on approach and landing would not have allowed him to be certified for the civil service of public passenger transport, it was necessary to obtain a dispensation obtained at the political level (meeting between Nixon and Pompidou in 1973), prestige and the Cold War required. Air traffic controllers had to give full priority to requests from Concorde what add to glamour and prestige to travellers but made procedures extremelly expensive. To comply with standard approach and landing procedures the early supersonic project of the Boeing 2707 had wings of variable geometry. The engines are also very different, Tupolev's engines are turbo-fans, those of Concorde are pure turbo-jets.

Like the fact that French and soviet researchers were sending samples, chemical analysis and reports regarding the metals that were used on their planes, so basically they were cooperating, also in a video it says that additional frontal wings were added because of poor wing design, and Concorde was better in that are for low speed flights...but soviets added those extra wings because of their gear design, they designed tu144 to be able to land on more rough runways which would put more stress on gear system, that is why they made it stronger and placed it lower, because of such positioning tu144 had lower longitudinal loads during landing. But because of such gear placement angles of attack had to be lower for tu144 therefore those extra wings were added so that plane didn't have to raise its nose high which would result into tailstrike. Moreover engines could work at lower power modes and speed could be decreased for landing. Even a former Concorde pilot John Hutchinson told that I was a great detail for a plane and that they would probably add it up to a new Concorde if it had to come..

So yeah, there is much more to tell about the history of the plane.

Little correction: they didn't know early on that it would be a commercial failure. more than 15 companies were interested in the place. But the rise of the price of oil after the 1973 crisis change the game for good and discouraged all of them. In the end, only the french and british national companies were probably forced to buy it as they were state owned back then.

Concorde was occasionally used to ferry extremely time-sensitive or otherwise extremely valuable cargo around. A French Concorde was once used to ferry a rare anti-venom from France to somewhere in Africa for some poor patient who had only hours left to live; amazingly, they survived, and they put part of it down to the time saved by the Concorde.
British Concorde's, equally, were sometimes used to carry transplant organs, diamond shipments and certain forms of currency, with a safe in the back of the plane for this purpose.

The Paris Air Show disaster was a total responsibility of the French. They sent another plane to photograph the TU-144 during its flight and never told the Soviets. That small plane suddenly appeared in front of TU and the pilots had to maneuver the plane out of its way. The heavy TU-144 was flying too low and couldn’t complete the maneuver.

The Concorde wing and engines were developed for the TSR2 - with military money. Also, the TU144 crash at the Paris show was caused by the French military sending up a reconnaissance plane to photograph the canard winglets in action. The French did not inform the Soviets, so the pilot over-reacted when he saw a French fighter very close to the TU144 and overstressed the airframe in taking evasive action. Afterwards, French fighter aircraft had canards and the French government gave the SU a trade deal on condition that the matter would not become public.

This is an urban legend, the other one is that knowing russian spies will try to steal concorde blueprints (two russian spies were arrested with airframe, landgear and brakes blueprints) french and english engineers intentionnaly placed flaws on the blueprints. By the way french fighter aircraft had canards since 1968 (check for the Mirage IIIRS), 5 years prior to that incident... Some informations from the crashed Tu-144 flight recorder are now public and nowaday the most admitted explanation is that russian pilots/engineers desactivated some securities to push the Tu-144 to its limits to show his "superior manoeuvabrility " over the concorde.

Well, my mom flew Tu-144 when she was a girl together with my grandma. And I recall her stories about that. How super cool it was. She also said that engine noise passed when the plane gained supersonic speed. Actually she did not complain about noise only said about supersonic speed quietness. I think it's like an attraction to enjoy supersonic speed at supersonic age feel the engine for some time and then observe the sonic boom phenomena and much less noise. I think anyone who flew it would recall it with admiration. It's not like you fly to space and say well it was super comfy. It's not about that. Relative danger makes the flight even a greater adventure and fun. May be I'll ask my mom about her memories of this flight when i talk to her again. My grandma was a teacher btw and granddad was a miner both never drank alcohol in case you want to mix some racism here.

P.S.: spoke to mom. She visited cockpit in flight as a child. Will post more info soon. May be she remembers pilots or some interesting details. I think at that time children and curious people in the western countries too were allowed to visit cockpit sometimes.

Soviet production was geared for heavy industry and defense. In these fields, they were equal or better than anyone else in the world. When they tried their hand in consumer products and services, the result was, at it's very best, "almost as good" as western stuff, but usually it was far, far below par.

Given the history of Soviet engineering, it's not that they cut out "unneeded" stuff, it's more like they couldn't get more desirable advanced systems working, so they cut those out and then just pretend it was always designed that way. The Tu-144 engineers in this video would've probably loved to have the same supercruise technologies and highly optimized wing designs as the Concorde, but instead had to make do with gas-guzzling afterburning engines and a deployable canard (adding yet another layer of mechanical sophistication to the Tu-144 that the Concorde on the other hand didn't need).

It is strange to hear the author's story about "brutal landings" because of the speed when the landing speed of the Tu-144 (270 km / h) was lower than that of the Concorde (300 km / h). The Tu-144 needed a parachute due to the lack of suitable airfields and for emergency situations.
Also, the author did not mention the reason for the crash of the Tu-144 in 1983 in Paris - this was not the cause of a malfunction, but a forced maneuver due to an unexpected flight interference.
In general, the Tu-144 was simply not needed by the USSR, so its operation was curtailed, and not because it was "backward," as the author says.
So, the USSR has not existed for 30 years, and Western propaganda, denigrating its achievements, is still working. Applause.

TU-144 Was a vanity project from at the time head of state Nikita Cruschov. Soviet designers and engineers knew and told to Cruschov that it didn't made sense to create such aircraft for the "daily use", but comrade Cruschov insisted. Of course creating this aircraft gave a great deal of experience and knowledge which I am sure was used in other projects.
I remember seeing one standing in some airfield near the city of Kuibishev (Samara) in 1992. It looked magnificent.

I just returned from Russia where I lived for two years. In my last two weeks I was finally able to visit the Monino Air Force museum where they have many planes on display... among them the Tu-144. I have to say it is a beautiful plane but definitely fits into the “Soviet” clique of aircraft. It was probably one of the most golden days of my life.

They were doing test runs on the nose and canards while I was there too!

Years ago, in a previous life, heard a story about the TU144. As the clip shows, the Soviets stole a lot of technical data, drawings etc. But, the Brits and French knew this so some of the drawings had very subtle aerodynamic changes made to them, which may go someways to explaining the poor safety record of the TU144.
As for Concord being for the rich, I did win a flight of fantasy on Concord between Heathrow and Charles De Gaulle in 1990. All that fine champagne and caviar, literally, felt a little tired and confused when I disembarked in CDG.

As far as I know, the prototypes of the Tu-144 were laid in 1965 and for Tupolev it was not entirely new technologies, since they already had the supersonic Tu-22, which had been in operation since 1962.

The scrapping of the Boing SST wasn't only because they were having difficulties with stabilizing the hydraulic retraction on their advanced wing design that would have dramatically reduced the drag at supersonic speeds thus dramatically decreasing fuel consumption, but also when a bill was passed in congress that prohibited supersonic flight over the Continental United States. It would have been a far superior plane than the French built Concord but it's purpose of being able to fly from L.A to New York in less than 2 hours was killed with the deciding vote by California's Democratic Senator Alan Cranston, who proudly stated that the stopping of the Boing SST would not effect his California Constituents since this was a Washington project. Then thousands of jobs were then killed in Southern California (Cranston's constituency) because all the sub-contracts to Northrop Aircraft (who were going to build the wings), North American Aviation (Who had the main fuselage or it could be the other way around), along with many other Southern California contracts. All Washington was going to do was the final assembly. The last time he was voted back into office he was latterly senile. As an ex Southern Californian, The political agenda in that state is a big reason that I moved out!

Should have mentioned that in practice, the tu 144 wouldn't go supersonic for passenger flights as the Soviet union had banned supersonic travel over land, and as mentioned it only flew one route over land. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Crazy fact: NASA (Yes, the space agency) bought a TU144 to use as a test bed to push the limits of supersonic aircraft technology.

It used parachutes not because of the bad wing. It wasn't bad. There is no shortage of bad things with this plane, no need to find them where there was none. :-)
It used parachutes as a temporary substitute for reverse thrust.

Tu-144 had to be designed to fly significantly higher than Concorde, full 2 kms of difference, in fact (to make a sonic boom a bit weaker: it was flying over Soviet heartland, after all).
At the same time, unlike the Concorde, it had to make do of Soviet runways, not the best runways in the world. Just compare their chassis systems. Parachutes(and reverse thrust) are a part of the original concept.

They should have used more sound insulation for the passenger cabin, then they would have been just as good. And that crash in Paris was because of a Frensh Mirage passed the flight line of the Tu-144, but of course the frenshmen arrogant refused

The canards are not so much for added stability at low speeds but they're an 'early warning' against a stall.
If the plane becomes too slow, without canards it would slow down till the entire wing 'stopped working' causing an inevitable crash.

With canards, the nose will drop first when the airflow over the canards becomes is not enough anymore to keep the little wings operating.
The nose dropping makes the plane pick up more speed and the pilot can then safely level off the plane again.

On defence of the TU-144.
It only recently came out that the crash during the Paris airshow was attributed to interference by a French fighter plane that was flying above the Tupolev to gather photographs that the pilot was not told about.

As he did a manoeuvre to show the TU's climbing rate, he noticed the french plane and took a sharp nosedive to avoid collision, a manoeuvre that was beyond the TU's designed capabilities.

It's because the crew of the Mirage IIIR photo aircraft was told to stay away while Concorde displayed at the show. No such luxuries for the Tu-144, though. 14 people died because of that.

1:30 most importantly there was neither demand/rationale for using Concorde nor Tu-144. The number of passengers on both (long haul, fast flights) to the airports which could provide special Concorde and Tu-144-rated fuel was vanishingly small.

You would need several hours for that ..... the prototype Concorde on its very first flight was far safer than any Tu-144 ever was. It looked impressive for sure, but was a long way from being a safe commercial airliner. The soviets lacked the technology to make it so.

The Russians have always claimed that the Concordski(TU144) was somehow sabotaged into crashing. I have no data to support or dispel that, but they were flying from an airport that was their arch-rival, so who knows? The key to that design was whether it could economically super cruise; otherwise, the fuel consumption would make it untenable. From the presentation, all the subtle development fine points were missed by the Soviet industrial spies, so the plane was only great on paper, as was the case with many Soviet outright copies of western tech. Makes me wonder about the Soviet space shuttle, too.

Good video, I'm a TU-144 fan. Saw the model of it 50 years ago at EXPO 67 in Montreal. The Paris Airshow crash was not the fault of the aircraft, that's another story.

It was the fault of the aircraft though! Intentionally faulty designs planted by the concorde team were used which caused the crashes. On top of that, if the lazy soviets had actually investigated what they were stealing they would have caught the problems. Communists don't care about people's lives, people exist only for the glory of the party, losing lives provides convenient victim heros for the party's use. The soviets bragged about stealing technology, and that's part of what brought them down.

The TU-144 has been upgraded dramatically with modern equipment and still in service in the Russian air force, so in the end the TU-144 is the winner.

When Concorde crashed russian engineers sayed with sadness "if Concorde had its engines in the place Tu-144 has, the tragedy could have been avoided". As we know it was the engines that set fire to the fuel leaking from damaged wing.
