Say You Will
friends Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw the world in a dream
As it sailed around the sun
As it searched for a home to claim
To join in
I saw man and his plan
To fly across the sea
He left his own family
To join in
It was the best thing he had
It was the best thing he had
I saw the world
And it changed me
And those who came
Were consumed by their own fame
They joined in
And now you struggle with the choice
Would you leave and save your voice
Would you try again
And join in
It was the best thing we had
It was the best thing we had
It was the best thing we had
And oh how we labored there
Oh how we labored there
Oh how we labored there
Oh
It was the best thing we had
It was the best thing we had
It was the best thing

And oh how we labored there
Oh how we labored there

Overall Meaning

In "Say You Will," Friends take us on a journey through the lens of someone who has seen the world and witnessed humanity's quest for belonging, purpose, and fulfillment. The opening lines set the tone for the song, as the singer describes seeing the Earth in a dream, as it circles around the sun, searching for a place to call home. The image of the Earth as a sentient being, capable of longing for a place to belong, speaks to the universal human desire to find a sense of belonging and purpose.

The next verse takes a closer look at humanity and our desire to explore, discover and conquer. The imagery of a man leaving his family to fly across the sea reflects the romanticized narrative of adventurers who pursue their dreams at any cost. The line "He left his own family to join in" suggests that perhaps there is a sense of communal belonging that transcends our individual needs and desires.

As the song progresses, it takes a darker turn, as the singer reveals that those who pursued fame and success were ultimately consumed by it. The chorus "It was the best thing we had" is repeated throughout the song, offering a bittersweet reflection on humanity's pursuits and the sacrifices we make for them. The final lines "Oh how we labored there" convey a sense of labor, struggle and effort that underpins all human endeavors.

Overall, "Say You Will" is a reflective and contemplative song about the human condition, our search for meaning, and the sacrifices we make for our dreams.

This is definitely one of the biggest TV sitcom moments in history, I remember when this episode first aired in the 90s, everyone was talking about it for weeks after and it was all over the TV guide magazine covers the week it aired lol.

Henry

@Sophie Loves Sunsets yes , this episode aired in the month of May and it was the end of the season 4 , the season 5 started in September and during the that time everyone was talking about the " i Ross take thee Rachel" , mainly because Ross and Rachel were "the dream couple" and of that time they were the most loved characters at the time.
