Not worrying about a thing
Or which lane I'm in
They cleared out as the bell was rung
Standing in an empty room
Cause they all had a plan
I thought there would be more
I thought that I could be someone
Is this it
Baby
Is this it
Let's go for a drive
I've never had the fuel
And everything's so hard
To find
Need there be more
Need we be someone
Let's forget the score
What would we need it for
Cause I don't think
This is it
Baby
That's not it
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
But I can make it work
The lyrics of Friends' song "This Is The Start" tells a story of the uncertainty and restlessness that often come with being at a crossroads. The singer longs for the simplicity and care-free nature of their youth, where they didn't have to worry about the stresses of the world or the future. They all had a plan, and the singer thought they would have a place in it, but now they are unsure. They are questioning if this is all there is, if this is the end of the road for them.
The idea of taking a drive is presented as a way to escape from the pressures of the world and find clarity. The singer has never had the fuel, both literally and metaphorically, to take a drive before. Everything feels so hard to find, and they wonder if there needs to be more to life, if they need to be someone else to find satisfaction. They offer to forget about the score, to stop putting pressure on themselves to succeed, and just enjoy the journey.
The repetition of "But I can make it work" at the end of the song reinforces the idea that while the singer may be uncertain about the future, they are ready to take on the challenges that come their way. They are determined to make everything work, to find meaning and purpose in their life, regardless of the roadblocks they may encounter.
