Bittersweet
geneva.b & Joel Siméus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes I wonder if you leaving was a blessing
Yeah, you saved me from some lessons
That my heart could never keep
Oh, I only got a glimpse of what we could've been
If we had made it, and I hate that it feels so bittersweet
There's still a trace of you
In every little thing I do
God, I wish that wasn't true
But I'm letting go
I'm letting go
I'm letting you go
No, you can't hurt me anymore
I'm moving on
'Cause I am stronger than you ever thought I'd be
I can see clearly now you're gone
Stay gone
It's bittersweet
Do you remember?
How you promised me forever and ever
But your love changed with the weather
There's still a trace of you
In every little thing I do
God, I wish that wasn't true
But I'm letting go
I'm letting go
I'm letting you go
No, you can't hurt me anymore
I'm moving on
'Cause I am stronger than you ever thought I'd be
I can see clearly now you're gone
Stay gone
It's bittersweet
I know the scars you've left will fade
Might take a few more days or years
But I know they won't stay
I know I've said it all before
But I'm not that girl anymore
Whose heart you left bleeding on the floor
I'm letting go
I'm letting go
I'm letting you go
No, you can't hurt me anymore
I'm moving on
'Cause I am stronger than you ever thought I'd be
I can see clearly now you're gone

Stay gone
It's bittersweet

On my first watch it felt like the girl was there but not actually there, a placeholder for the other person during more heart-eyes moments because when they're together as a 3, she's there but they don't interact with her.

It's edited as though to show they're both thinking about the same memories with 'the girl' - but Mingyu was never shown at the bar or at the convenience store, so it wouldn't make sense for them to be thinking about the same thing if they weren't both there.

Wonwoo returns the hat the girl was wearing to Mingyu while Mingyu is wearing the airpods they were sharing in the convenience store.

"Avoiding the rain" is a very common trope in romance dramas (made famous by the story Sonagi where the girl and boy take shelter together in the rain) but in this case when Mingyu steps out into the rain, it's also a sign of bravery. He knows exactly what is out there: the heavy downpour and darkness (as a representation of society and its attitude towards non-straight relationships) and still chooses to come out into the rain and encourages Wonwoo to do the same. It's obviously not pleasant being out in the rain, but at least they have each other to get through it.

or maybe it's just a love triangle with the girl, idk

The song “Bittersweet” expresses the conflict between the sweetness of newly-discovered love and the sting of friendship among a group of three longtime friends by tracing the delicate trails of emotion to the place where they cross. WONWOO and MINGYU helped write the lyrics, which illustrates the dilemma “between love and friendship.”Featuring in the song with her unrivaled vocal timbre is artist Lee Hi, adding a sense of maturity to WONWOO and MINGYU’s masculine vocals. The result is such perfect musical chemistry that this highlight is not to be missed.

so basically they both like the same girl and they decide to give up on her (im not sure if they give up on her or on begin with her because they’re all friends so) to protect their friendship, which they think is more important

IT'S ALREADY 2024 BUT I STILL CAN'T GET OVER FROM THIS MASTERPIECE

As a person who writes based on observations I can see that mingyu and wonwoo loved a girl who were their friend. They imagined their hangouts with the girl as dates. When they finally decided to confess to her, we can see from the lyric "eyes meeting but hearts apart so sweet and so bitter" that the girl see's them as her friend and likes their friendship and nothing else. This obviously breaks their heart. As in the last scene we can see that they moved on from her and happy with each other. Most of the people think that rain indicates sadness, its actually used to represent the last step of clearing your mind from something that hurt/bothered you or your life. (I was rewatching this mv almost 18 times to write this)
Edit: i think..I'm wrong but everyone has their own point of view

@entyalta

Yess, I think soo. And at the end that they still chose to keep their friendship....
