Earl Grey Tea
griff Lyrics

You're so scared you're aging faster
So you drink Earl Grey tea 'cause you heard that's the answer
And you're so scared of dying slowly
But why aren't more scared of dying lonely?

Because I'm slipping away by the second
So aren't you gonna save me, too?
And before you make it to Heaven
How you gonna save me and you?
And you're so concerned about everybody
You get up, go to work, and earn more money
So that when you go, you got something to show for it, yeah
Well, you'll have everything, but no one to hold on to
Because I'm slipping away by the second
So aren't you gonna save me, too?
And before you make it to Heaven
How you gonna save me and you?

Yeah, you're so scared of getting cancer
(Aren't you gonna save me, too?)
So you drink Earl Grey tea 'cause you heard that's the answer
(How you gonna save me and you?)
And you're so scared of dying slowly
(Aren't you gonna save me, too?)
But why aren't you as scared of dying lonely?
(How you gonna save me and you?)

Oh, and if we haven't taken our last dying breath
Then I'm here and I'm waiting to save anything that's left
So don't give up just yet (how you gonna save me and you?)
Oh, so how can you just start counting down from ten?
Oh, without me? I'm waiting to start this all over again
Oh-oh, I ain't give up just yet

Yeah, you said you're scared of getting cancer
So you drink Earl Grey tea 'cause you heard that's the answer

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Earl Grey Tea" by Griff delve into the feeling of fear and loneliness that comes with aging and the realization that life is fleeting. The first line expresses the fear of aging faster and the subsequent line suggests that drinking Earl Grey tea is seen as an answer to prevent aging. This line is quite interesting because the singer is not necessarily condemning the choice of tea but pointing out the irrationality of it as a cure to aging. The chorus is an invitation to save the singer, who seems to be slipping away by the second, but questions why the idea of dying lonely isn't as terrifying as dying slowly.

In the second verse, the singer explores the idea of earning money and having material possessions but not having someone to hold on to. This line is powerful and touches on the idea of loneliness despite the accumulation of wealth. In the bridge, the singer encourages the listener not to give up yet and asks how they can count down from ten without her. This line suggests the idea of the singer being someone to hold onto and suggests that one does not need to go through life alone.

To summarize, "Earl Grey Tea" by Griff is a poignant and thought-provoking song that explores the fear of aging, the irrationality of solutions to it, and the importance of having someone to hold onto in life.

I think Earl Grey Tea is one of Griff's most underated songs, I mean its so heartfelt and beautiful, one of my all time fav songs from her, though its hard to pick because litterally all her songs are on my playlist

@threemileallan

Yeah, its underrated! I love that she recorded it on her childhood piano. What a great choice, gives the song so much more nostalgic emotion with all the rattles and squeaks of that old thing. Only reason this song doesn't get more love is that the rest of her songs are so ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Imagine: you wake up in your car, which has been your home for the last seven months, steep some earl grey tea at the gas station, pop on YouTube and search โ€œearl grey teaโ€ for the hell of it, and you find this masterpiece as you look at the Colorado mountains from your driver seat in an empty parking lot.
