Time Stood Still
guardians Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Light fails at dawn
The moon is gone
And deadly the night reigns

Deceit

Finally I've found myself
In these lands
Horror and madness I've seen here
For what I became a king of the lost?
Barren and lifeless the land lies

Lord of all Noldor
A star in the night
And a bearer of hope
He rides into his glorious battle alone
Farewell to the valiant warlord

The fate of us all
Lies deep in the dark
When time stands still at the iron hill
I stand alone
No one's by my side
I'll dare you
Come out
You coward
Now it's me or you

He gleams like a star
And the sound of his horn's
Like a raging storm
Proudly the high lord
Challenges the doom
Lord of slaves he cries

Slowly in fear
The dark lord appears
Welcome to my lands
You shall be damned

The iron crowned
Is getting closer
Swings his hammer
Down on him
Like a thunderstorm
He's crushing
Down the Noldor's
Proudest king

Under my foot
So hopeless it seems
You've troubled my day
Now feel the pain

The Elvenking's broken
He stumbles and falls
The most proud and most valiant
His spirit survives
Praise our king
Praise our king

Praise our king
Praise our king

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "Time Stood Still" by the band Guardians describes a world in chaos. The light fails at dawn and the moon is gone, making the night deadly. The word "deceit" is added as if to imply that something sinister is happening within this world. The second verse describes a character who becomes a king of the lost in a barren and lifeless land. This character questions why they have become this leader and hints at the horror and madness they have seen during their reign.

The song then shifts to the story of the High King of the Noldor, who is a star in the night and bearer of hope. He rides into a glorious battle alone, bidding farewell to the valiant who came before him. The fate of everyone is at stake when time stands still at the iron hill, and the High King stands alone with no one by his side. He challenges his opponent, who is referred to as a coward, and declares that it's now "me or you".

The final verse reveals the identity of the High King's enemy, the dark lord. As he appears, he welcomes the High King to his lands and declares that he shall be damned. As the two engage in battle, the dark lord swings his hammer down upon the High King, crushing him. Despite being broken and stumbling, the High King's spirit survives. The lyrics end with the repeated phrase of "Praise our king", perhaps as a way to acknowledge the High King's bravery and sacrifice.
