It Only Takes A Moment
hello dolly! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It only takes a moment
For your eyes to meet and then
Your heart knows in a moment
You will never be alone again

I held her for an instant
But my arms felt sure and strong
It only takes a moment
To be loved a whole life long

Isn't the world full of wonderful things?
I have lost so many things, my job, my future
Everything that people think is important
But I don't care

'Cause even if I have to dig ditches for the rest of my life
I should be a ditch digger who once had a wonderful day
I missed it, do you mind? I came in late, right after, 'It only'

Takes a moment
But his arms felt sure and strong
It only takes a moment

He held me for an instant
But his arms felt safe and strong
It only takes a moment
To be loved a whole life long

And that is all that love's about
And we'll recall when time runs out

That it only took a moment
To be loved a whole life long

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "It Only Takes A Moment" from the musical Hello, Dolly! speak to the power of love at first sight. The song suggests that when two people's eyes meet, in that single moment, they will have found a love that will last forever. The lyrics suggest that, in the moment when they first connect, two people can feel an incredible sense of safety, surety, and connection. The singer seems to suggest that, no matter what else he has lost in life, the love he has found in this moment is enough to sustain him.

In the second verse, the lyrics continue to emphasize the strength and safety that can come from a single moment of connection between two people. The singer suggests that, even if they only held each other for an instant, their love has the power to last a whole lifetime. The final verse suggests that, no matter what else happens in life, the love that two people can find in a single moment will be the most important thing they ever experience. When their time runs out, they will remember that it only took a moment to find love that will last a lifetime.

May I - with sincere respect - offer a slightly different perspective?

I am 85 years old. I still live an active life, socially and in a career I love. During those years I have made some horrible mistakes. I will never lose my sense of guilt and regret about them.

But I also have had days, or even moments of accomplishment, that I knew right then for certain, whose excitement and glow would never fade. And they haven't. Maybe it's because I told myself at the time that they would always be mine.

Someone once asked me, when we were talking about mistakes and regrets, if I would like to be 20 years old and start all over again so I could pursue missed opportunities and avoid the mistakes. My answers stands, "I would not want to give up one single day of my life, no matter how bad some were, if it meant I would lose even one of the bad days that made the good ones even sweeter."

For just a few examples, I would not give up prison in a banana republic for three weeks. Or the time someone I loved, trusted and admired to my core, used me, exploited me and threw me out when she got what she wanted. Or consider my two weeks in a gritty, urban, homeless shelter, not because I abused drugs or booze, but simply had some bad luck, with not a penny to my name or a job, in my late 50s.

I would keep all of it, the good and the bad, before I would give up any one of those special days and moments when I achieved something I've always wanted. When Sinatra sings, "I ate it up and spit it out. I did it my way." I know exactly what those words mean.

I hope you remind yourself, when the special moments happen, so you keep them close. Just one of them can warm all the cold winters.

I get teary eyed when I listen to this song. When I was 10 Wall-E was my absolute favorite movie, I could not stop watching it. That summer (11 years ago), my grandfather's cancer rapidly went from mild to terminal and he was moved to hospice in July. I remember visiting him frequently and not fully comprehending that he was going to be gone forever soon, but knowing that his cancer would kill him. (actually began crying while typing at this point bear with me) This song was my favorite from Wall-E and now every time I watch this movie I think of him, and especially when I hear this song. He died in August, and it took four years to truly grasp that I would never see him again. I miss him every day, and I miss my childhood every day.

To all the kids who will read this, I want you to hear this: don't let your childhood pass you by. Don't take your grandparents for granted. You are only a kid once, you only get one shot. Enjoy it. Don't spend it wishing to be an adult. Spend time with your family. I heard this growing up, but my biggest regret is that I did not listen and missed out on good times that I can never have now that people I loved are long gone and I'm just too old to do some things. In fact its why I made my channel to begin with, to preserve the memories of good times I had with my dad long, long ago. Before you know it, you will be an adult. Live each day to its fullest.

That was beautiful, my great grandad died literally 2 days ago, he was the only man who ever treated me with love as a kid, so this made me cry a little 😅💔

@whydowehavethesehandles

The dumbest thing a kid can do is wish he was an adult.
