Insatiable
helmet - aftertaste demos Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When you're worshiped and adored
Attention starved, inflatable
An ego that is insatiable
You've always been so superior
Avoid eye contact with the mirror
I still admire your toned exterior
I need somebody to hate
The attention that I crave
It's self-esteem that I can almost save
The song 'Insatiable' by Helmet talks about the complex nature of human ego and the need for validation. The lyrics deal with the singer who has experienced adoration and worship in the past but is now being ignored. The song starts with a line "It's never easy being ignored/ When you're worshiped and adored," conveying the feeling of neglect and insignificance that can come after experiencing fame or success. The song goes on to describe the insatiable ego of the singer, who craves attention and admiration, and becomes a slave to their own inflated sense of self-importance.
The lines "Avoid eye contact with the mirror/ I still admire your toned exterior" describe the singer's constant need for validation from others, as they cannot find it within themselves. The lyrics also reveal the need to have someone to hate and imitate, which shows the struggle with finding a sense of self and identity. The line "The attention that I crave/ It's self-esteem that I can almost save" highlights the underlying fact that the singer's need for validation stems from low self-esteem, and the song implies that the singer has recognized this but is still struggling to overcome it.

Love the Sardy mix and it's probably closer to that "Helmet thing" - after Betty's ultra-gloss production, I think a lot of fans wanted to get a bit more of the "Strap It On" noisy vibe. Now, with that said... Terry Date made this band sound absolutely freaking huge. More polished? Yeah, I mean - he was working on Around The Fur, $3 Bill Y'all, and the Handsome s/t right around that same time and it certainly had "that TD thing". But I've never heard Helmet's guitars crush it quite like they do on the finished Aftertaste release.

Hey darkototalgeek, I am wondering if you also have the demo for the song "(High) Visibility", which I believe was included in the same Aftertaste album demo sessions as this track here? I used to have the demo for (High) Visibility, years ago, but my computer's hard drive crashed and I lost that track, and my first iPod which I put that song on also broke... I've looked all over the internet, but all the download links for the Aftertaste demos that I've found are expired or removed...
@darkototalgeek
(High) Visibility wasn't included on this German Magazine CD promo release, just "Insatiable".I have the aborted "Aftertaste - Dave Sardy Mix" on CD somewhere. I'll have a look and let you know.
