Honeyhoney made their studio debut by issuing the Loose Boots EP in early 2008; the musicians then hit the road with Lifehouse (another band on the Ironworks roster) while finding time to work on their debut album. First Rodeo was released later that year, featuring varied influences that ranged from crossover jazz to neo-soul to engaging alt-country.

We worked so hard and sold the fun
Oh mama look at my heart
I'm useless now that it's dark
We're praying for rain a thunder of change
And lightning to lighten my way
My word is gone and is never coming back
Honeyhoney's song "Oh Mama" is a bluesy and melancholic tune that reflects on the pain and difficulties of hard work and the longing for change. The lyrics paint a vivid image of exhaustion and toil, with the line "All covered in mud the day is done" indicating the physical demands of manual labor. Despite the hard work, the singer still finds themselves feeling useless and hollow at the end of the day. The words "we worked so hard and sold the fun" indicate that whatever work they were doing was supposed to be enjoyable or at least satisfying, yet it has left the singer feeling empty.
As the song progresses, the singer turns their attention to the sky, hoping for a storm - a "thunder of change" - to come and shake things up. The metaphorical use of lightning to "lighten [their] way" indicates a desire for clarity and direction, a sense of purpose beyond the endless grind of hard work. However, despite this hope for a new start, the singer believes that something essential has been lost: "My word is gone and is never coming back." This line highlights a sense of loss or trauma that the singer has experienced, leading to a sense of disconnection from their own self.
Overall, "Oh Mama" is a powerful and moving song that speaks to the struggles of blue-collar workers, the desire for something more, and the existential crisis of self-identity. It's a commentary on the consequences of hard work without meaning, and the deep-seated hope for change and renewal.
