2:40 Quick Question.

So, I do sometimes get a certain "fetishit" desire. It happens once every few months or so. I have these really vivid fantasies that stay with me for days.

Are they good or are they bad?

Unlike plain desires, like lust, gluttony and the like, these are very complex fantasies, that, where I to attempt, would take a lot of planning and dedication to arrange.
Sure, the ultimate benefit of them playing out would be a temporary pleasure, but unlike other hedonistic pursuits these require the level of dedication a creative project would. They like engineenered experiences. In that sense I guess they could be seen as a positive.

I guess if they didn't relate to carnal pleasure, they would be the equivalent of spending a few weeks preparing to climb Mount Everest. Booking the tickets, getting the gear and finally doing it. Sure I would reach the peak for only a few minutes and would have spent a lot of time and money.

I know it would be a worthwhile experience to me. But from a stoic perspective, would it be virtuous or not?

Starting off with one with nature is a problem .
Because it refuses the inclination of humans to create.
Now, you can create, but how?
To draw a picture means you derive the colors and utensils from where?
From the earth.
Let's go on. To make a building to house your family, or members
of a community means you used geometry other than that earth. You cut down trees, or dug up mortar, using metals which were refined by fire.
To smith an auger, or shovel would take digging in the earth, smelting by fire (fuel first by wood), and generally taking down some portion of nature.
Should we be as the animals?
What? They compete with or kill each other.
I think the idea of being one with nature as a first cause disagrees
with human existence.
Did Henry Ford, or Benz sin the most because they created the internal combustion engine? Many lives of plants were ended by metallurgy.
Plus without coal, the early people would cut down trees for warmth.
How does ecstatic joy have to do with seeing someone fail?
To me it's learning a mathematical language or musical scale, or finding a love.

Awesome video, man! Thank you, your videos help a lot. As someone who deals with chronic depression and all kinds of inner demons, Stoicism and philosophy in general have helped me to live a bit more wisely, virtuous and have been a useful tools to clear my head from the negative connotations that are often capable to worsen my condition.

The video is great and I find myself agreeing with a whole lot of what the Stoics had to say about those three states of mind. I only think that one can be way more useful to society if he stays out of politics and simply help and serve others through more effective ways.

I have had an accident and a near death experience.. Before that time Is in 2018, I was in bad shape anxiety and depression. I have overcome that thank you to David Hawkins, but I maintain a lot of my mental clarity with a daily dose of this channel. There is not A-day goes by that I do not listen to at least 4 episodes sometimes over and over

Ataraxia: "The ability to reduce the number of wishes, needs, longings (not extinguish desire as budhism) in order to reduce suffering.

I know this is an old comment. But a question: is it only a difference over quantity? ...the stoics want to keep desires low in number while Buddhists feels there should be none at all?

@magnamia Budhists want to "extinguish the fire of desire (longing+outcome of action); stoics equanimity is about not letting what happens unstable your emotional life. And apatheia is about not losing control of our passions (controlling passions with self-control; it's not against desire, we may desire to be virtuous.)

Politics have become so toxic these days that I’m inclined to agree with the Epicurean viewpoint on that. But I still respect & apply Stoic philosophy in my life as best I can. Honestly you probably shouldn't have to read so many Stoicism books. It's better to have few books you actively recall on than have many books you can barely remember. Those two books alone are probably the best you really need

Thank you for sharing this video. This time I'm reading meditations from Markus Aurelius, and I often see your videos. Markus usually says to avoid the hedone, as you discribed it, but he doesn't say at which point a romantic relationship with a person is providing us hedone. That I'm saying, is that I feel like he wants to avoid any emotion, including love for other people. Can you make a video about the emotional wealth described in the Stoic philosophy? Thank you. You know, these Greek words sometimes are used in the negative sense. I mean that those words have either positive meanings and negative ones. For instance, apathy is used predominantly in the negative sense, ataraxia is also something from the "medical circles".

Eudaimonía- (The ultimate goal in life is to live a good life guided by our virtues, fulfillment of ones true nature.) This produces wellbeing and inner peace but these are not the end goals but rather the result of virtuous living.

Apatheia - (Without passions, equanimity, living virtuously) Those who bridle their emotions with reason are in a state of “apatheia”

Ataraxía - (Without mental trouble, unperturbed) Ataraxia is not a positively-defined state such as “happy” or “excited”. It was believed by the Hellenistic philosophies to be a “resting” state of serenity.

I might be off, but my understanding is that by 'practice' of apatheia and ataraxia you reach eudaimonia. You practice moderation and virtue little by little until you reach the correct state of mind. I say this because I had the impression from the last minutes of the video that you have to reach eudaimonia first to live in ataraxia and apatheia.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the following: what if we have so much on our to-do list that we feel almost permanently overwhelmed and sometimes completely paralysed because we experience an imbalance in 'what needs to be done' and 'the time we have', often panicking that there's not enough time. Is this linked to perfectionism and wanting to do every little detail right? Or is this just a creation in our mind caused by our thoughts that fear a lack of time? Why do we feel like we need to do something within a certain timespan? Is it to gather wealth and feel safe? When does our 'need to evolve' become unhealthy and how can we find a healthy balance? Are there ways to change our thinking to not feel so overwhelmed all the time? Thank you!!

here are some thoughts. Like Jordan Peterson once said: a schedule is not a bloody prison. Wright down a to-do-list for a month, break it down to weeks, to days, even to hours, if it´s nessesary. What are the most important things and how much time is waisted by thinking about problems that cant be solved in that very moment? Take a certain time (mine is in the morning between 7 am - 10 am) this is where you take care of all the things you want to get done for this certain day. After your timeframe, you stop yourself from thinking about all the other things and you stop working on them, since you already did everything for this day you had in mind and you probably have to do other things for the rest of the day anyway(like going to work, school, university....whatever)! Now be proud of yourself and chill out, be patient. Feeling overwhelmed in these kind of situations could be a sign of overthinking and bad time management. Are you constantly thinking about all the stuff you want to get done? Why would you waist your time on thinking about anything you cant control or take care of in this moment. Try to figure out, when it is reasonable for you to think about your to-do-list. What kind of thoughts are going trough your mind anyway? Are you thinking in a constructive way or are you constantly afraid of all the negative aspects? The way we think and perspective is very important, because the way we think determines the way we feel. If someone is afraid of not having enough time, he is waisting the time he fears to lose. It also leads nowhere, except feeling bad about yourself. Perfectionism can lead to the creation in your mind you are mentioning and this creation is toxic, when it gets to the point, where you create fear of something that shouldnt be feared. Learn to befriend the things you are afraid of, because these fears you have are the best mirrors. They show you who you are and who you are able to become, when you overcome them. Eat breakfast, it has a profound influence on your mood. If you take care of yourself and your mood, it will be way easier to get all the things done, that leads to the feeling of being overwhelmed and stressed. The balance can be found by listening to yourself, your body and mind. Do not identify yourself with your body and mind, but listen to them and observe.

According to the stoics, a human is a rational and social animal. As such living according to nature means living as a rational and social being. Nature is a poor translation. Living according to nature means to live in a way that leaves you and others better off, as would be the case with a rational and social animal. Virtue is those qualities that support that.

Is it Tōmato or Tamato.......Potatō or Potato.......Neēther or Neither......this was an excellent rendition about Eudaumonia, Ataraxia and Apatheia.....these experiences of Equanimity, Tranquility and the Sublime are gateways to our own recognition of how they come about in our lives....Academia sometimes misses the mark when it puts more bearing on the pronunciation of a word than what it is pointing to so that we ourselves may taste a bit of ataraxia......and see for ourselves how that affects our psyche.

@Melville Richard Alexander Philosophy is not an esoteric wishy-washy where everyone holds hands and feels one with the cosmos. Ataraxia, Apatheia, and Eudaimonia have to be worked out intellectually, they are not for free and certainly can't be "felt". Reason is the opposite of gut feelings, and clarity of thought begins with small things – for example, the correct emphasis on foreign words. Those who use or pronounce words incorrectly can easily give the impression that they have not really penetrated their meaning either.

Hape Philosophy is a way of life and the most important part of it is to apply it to our way of living so that we may understand Eudaumonia, Ataraxia and Apatheia as a personal experience. Quibbling over the spelling and pronunciation is secondary......talking about philosophy is also not as important as living it, though both do occur. Excellence of character (Virtue) is the key that opens the door to explore and discover just exactly what Epictetus, Seneca and Marcus Aurelius we’re pointing to. Our time is in desperate need of a Renaissance of sorts that brings these ideas to the forefront ....because there is a hunger in humanity to find and live the “Good Life” ……… since where modern life is heading is a dead end........Intellect and Emotion are NOT two separate things, they are 2 sides of the same coin i.e. they are intertwined so I am not saying to feel our way into the philosophical life, because “Reason” is the sharp tool that leads the way along with Attention and Understanding.....so I am not endorsing a “feely” “wishy-washy” approach as a means to living Philosophy, but I am saying we don’t need to be overly concerned if we are NOT in Academia’s orbit for philosophy to make a difference in the “felt” quality of our lives.

Eudaimonia is flourishing of a human being. This is an action not just something merely felt. As such benzodaizepines cannot artificially induce it. Further, only temporary apathia can be achieved through it, as your body becomes used to the drugs. True apathia cannot be changed by outside circumstance.

You are incorrect. Apathy has its roots in apathia. Apathia means without passions, which are that which disorders a mind and prevents rationality according to classical philosophy. Modern apathy means uncaring.

If you are going to say someone else didn't do research, you might want to double check Wikipedia before you look silly.

@Cyberwar101 go and compare the wiktionary entries for apatheia in English and απάθεια in greek wiktionary(if you can read greek). They mean the same thing. And by the way, wikipedia is not very reliable and certainly not suitable for valid research.

The Stoic concept of apathaia does not mean the same thing as the English word apathy. Apathaia means freedom from negative passions - not all passions. As it is carefully explained in the video the Stoic recognizes a set of positive passions - and believe that a major task in life is to transfer the negative passions into their positive counterparts. Read Margaret Graver's "Stoicism and Emotion" for more information on this.
