Band frontman and principal songwriter Oh Hyuk was born in South Korea, moving to China with his family at only 5 months of age and spending most of his teens in Beijing. He returned to South Korea in 2012 to study Fine Arts at Hongik University, but has since taken a leave of absence to focus on the band's promotions . The majority of songs from Hyukoh's first EP 20 were completed by Oh alone while he was living in Beijing, and was recorded with session members while Hyuk performed in different Seoul venues as a solo artist under the name "Hyukoh". Wishing to perform with a band he sought up the other three members and officially formed the band Hyukoh in May 2014, holding their first performance in June 2014. In time they experienced large success in the underground music scene, often selling out small-scale venues and signing on with the small but well known management company DRDR AMC.
In summer of 2015, the band became widely known in South Korea after participating in the 2015 Infinite Challenge Summer Music Festival on the popular Korean variety program Infinite Challenge. The band received positive responses from critics and the public, even breaking the top ten of the Billboard World Albums Chart two months after the release of their second mini-album "22". Their sudden success is often credited to their appearance on the show, the band's musical talent, or a combination of the two."
On July 21, 2015, renowned Korean rapper and record producer Tablo revealed Hyukoh as the first act to sign with his independent label HIGHGRND (pronounced as High Ground). HIGHGRND is financially backed by Tablo's current management company, Korean music conglomerate YG Entertainment, but its operations are autonomous from its subsidizer. Hyukoh remains under DRDR AMC management.

Dead friends are behind you and me
Hands with the fire, jump to the sea
Only go higher you and me
We haven't fight just trying to survive
Anyone alive? You and me
Hands with the fire (fire), jump to the sea
Everyday is yesterday
We don't look back
Go forward with no regrets, we, the young
Forever mercy (ooh, ooh)
Everyday is yesterday
We don't look back
Meaning's always meaningless, we, the young
Forever mercy (ooh, ooh)
Everyday is yesterday
We don't look back
Go forward with no regrets, we, the young
Forever mercy (ooh, ooh)
Everyday is yesterday
We don't look back
Meaning's always meaningless, we, the young
Forever mercy (ooh, ooh)
The lyrics of "Young Man" by Sunset Rollercoaster convey a sense of struggle and survival in the face of challenges. The first two verses talk about the fight for survival, with the imagery of dead friends behind and the metaphorical leap into the sea with hands aflame. The repeated line "Only go higher you and me" suggests a determination to keep pushing forward despite the difficulties.
The chorus reflects on the passing of time and the fleeting nature of both joy and sorrow. It emphasizes the idea of not dwelling on the past but moving forward without regrets, particularly highlighting the resilience and adaptability of the young. The phrase "Forever mercy" could symbolize a hope for compassion and understanding in the midst of turmoil.
The Korean lyrics introduce the concept that sadness always comes in waves while joy passes fleetingly, capturing the transient nature of emotions. This sentiment is echoed in the repetition of the chorus in English, underscoring the idea that meanings are fleeting and ultimately insignificant for the youthful generation who are focused on living in the present and looking towards the future.
Overall, "Young Man" seems to encapsulate the themes of resilience, impermanence, and the relentless march of time. It speaks to the experience of facing challenges, navigating through fluctuating emotions, and finding a sense of purpose and direction amidst the chaos of life. The song portrays a poignant reflection on the journey of youth, with its struggles and moments of fleeting joy, all while embracing a forward-looking attitude and a sense of grace in the face of uncertainty.
