Out There
i-94 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you could only see yourself, the way I see you
Would your world remain a stage, or would it break you
Is it you or someone else, who chose to stay inside your universe
And hid behind the mask you wear again

I hope you find yourself, out there
I hope you see yourself somewhere
And when the conversation's thin and growing shallow
You put on your plastic grin, and they will swallow
Well is it you or someone else, without a friend
No one gets to know you while you hide behind the mask you wear again

Just how many lessons can you learn, until the show down
Just how many bridges can you burn? Burn them all
Don't count on me to be there when you fall, out there

If you could see yourself out there

Just how many bridges burned, just how many lessons learned
Just how many bridges burned out there, out there

If you could only see yourself the way I see you
There'll be nothing left to say

Overall Meaning

In "Out There," i-94 reflects on the struggle of self-discovery and the tension between one's public persona and inner turmoil. The singer wonders if the subject of the song, likely a friend or loved one, would be able to handle seeing themselves as they truly are, rather than the mask they put on for others. The question of the origin of the mask is also raised, as the subject is asked whether they chose to stay within their self-contained universe or were forced there by external forces.

The chorus serves as a rallying cry for the subject of the song to venture outside their comfort zone and find themselves. With lines like "I hope you find yourself, out there" and "If you could see yourself out there," i-94 urges the subject to take risks and expose their true self to the world. The bridge furthers this message by warning against burning bridges and relying on others to catch you when you fall.

Overall, "Out There" is a poignant reflection on the cost of hiding behind a mask and the importance of finding oneself. The song urges the listener to take risks and put themselves out there, even when it is scary or uncomfortable.
