idle talk
iamamiwhoami Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where are you, my long lost love?
It feels like yesterday has parted
I held you closest to my thrusting heart
Now the withdrawal seems to be starting

You’re not like anyone I’ve known
With you, I flourish into greatness
Extend my arms into immense delight
Making my future passing weightless

Quite an undertaking of fair promises
I stopped hearing you crow
Quite an understatement when harm surfaces
That is hidden in snow

I should have kept you safe
Shielded from a Trojan war

Where are you, my parted sun?
The last I saw of you was sinking
Into a giant hole of nothingness
As my desire started shrinking

Or if I choose to take you back
If I stand up for my believing (if you can steal while I laugh)
Can we make up for all the joy we lack? (it was the motion you were breaking)
Can we start giving and receiving? (what is the purpose of me giving?)

Quite an undertaking of fair promises
I stopped hearing you crow
Quite an understatement when home surfaces
That is hidden in snow

Where are you, my long lost love?
It feels like yesterday has parted

Overall Meaning

The song "Idle Talk" by iamamiwhoami is a melancholic reflection on a lost love. The singer is desperately searching for their long lost love and reflects on how they held them close to their heart. However, the withdrawal seems to be starting, and the singer is feeling the negative effects of the absence of their love. Despite this, the singer recognizes that their long lost love was unlike anyone they had ever known and was someone they flourished with into greatness. The singer reflects on the promises that their love had made and the harm that is hidden beneath the surface, just like snow can cover up dangerous ice.

The song shifts to addressing the lost love directly, asking where they are and reflecting on the last time they saw each other. The singer acknowledges that their desire for their love is shrinking and that they are unsure if they can make up for all the joy they lack. Despite this, the singer is willing to stand up for their beliefs and question the purpose of giving, suggesting that the relationship may have been unequal in terms of giving and receiving.

Overall, "Idle Talk" is a complex and emotional reflection on a lost love, and the lyrics suggest that the relationship was perhaps strained and unequal from the beginning.

No one has ever understood how much I love iamamiwhoami, and why. I’ve tried to show people where to start, given them possible interpretations, told them significance of lyrics/objects/presences/etc in the videos... No one cares as much as I do. I started listening back in early 2010. I remember sitting at a desk, staying up late to watch the first live concert and being absolutely entranced. I’ve kept up with all the new music throughout the years since then. It’s still just as magical as it was to me then. ❤️
