Spooky
in V.I.T.R.I.O.L. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Waking up, feeling strange
A look in the mirror confirms the change

All of my powers are out of control
Another host is carrying my soul

I am not myself today
I'm trapped in another body
I am here at the academy
To prepare a new shell for me

I'm not sure about that idea
The old one was really a part of me

I am not myself today
I'm trapped in another body

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to V.I.T.R.I.O.L.'s song Spooky describe a feeling of disorientation and confusion, as the singer wakes up feeling different and realizes that their powers are out of control. Looking in the mirror, they see a new host carrying their soul, which leads them to question their identity and sense of self. The first half implies that Specter Knight is giving the listener the choice to become undead of their own free will. That implies some moral nuance that you don't often see among undead characters.

@Idontlikeanyonehere

@PersonaLover249 we those are people HE killed, I think that the listener has trespassed and he’s giving them the choice to leave or be killed and join the lich yard, and he gives that choice to everyone who enters the lich yard.

Or I could just be dumb

@shadowbladeandlightin8889

Spitball take here

Could it be possible spectre knight is simply following the status quo of the graveyard? I mean the beings there probably had the mindset to destroy any living that disturbed them, you can't simply change the view of an entire kingdom that easily, however there is a definite superiority complex with the phrase "no pity from those who've transcended life" the undead might simply want to be left alone by those who won't respect the graveyard, any any trespassers (shovel knight for example) need to be swiftly removed in one way or another, it's an isolationist policy, and shovel knight is trespassing on every account as well as robbing valuables and disturbing the dirt the undead call home, it's no wonder they want people out if people like shovel knight are considered heros

@kvnclrksn100

I'll just become part of the lich yard and do what I have to do even if I need to defeat shovel knight

@CyanicCore

That seems to be the idea, though given the ending half, I have to wonder if they're somehow pushed to that choice.

@aubreyathame

specter knight is actually a pretty nuance character in shovel knight,
(spoilers for all 4 campaigns but)
in just the base shovel of hope campaign and plague of shadows campaign, you dont see this at all, as he's (or in this video's case she's) just another knight in the order of no quarter, but in specter of torment and king of cards you can see a lot more nuance to his character

in specter of torment, it's revealed that he's only undead by his choice to save his best friend's son from dying to the enchantress, and is actively working along with black knight to try to usurp the enchantress but to no avail, and in king of cards he's seen to be only fighting king knight due to king knight's cockiness and not heeding his warning to not become the joustus king (as it was a setup by the enchantress to get another member of the order of no quarter),
this implies that specter knight either knew that king knight is be the kind of person to join the enchantress at promise of his own profit (as seen in the ending) or just didnt want him to face any dangers that may lay ahead, as he is the ""tutorial"" boss, and only reluctantly gives king knight the standard joustus deck after beating him in combat, seemingly proving to specter knight that he may be stronger than expected
