The Trapeze Swinger
iron and wine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please, remember me
Happily
By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin
The time when
We counted every black car passing
Your house beneath the hill
And up until
Someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range
A piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention, but

Please, remember me
Fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then
They went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like 'We'll meet again'
And 'Fuck the man'
And 'Tell my mother not to worry'
And angels with their gray
Handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry, and

Please, remember me
At Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white
By midnight
We'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came
I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world
And then returned
And now you're lit up by the city, so

Please, remember me
Mistakenly
In the window of the tallest tower call
Then pass us by
But much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Leave and resonate
Just like the gates
Around the holy kingdom
With words like 'Lost and Found' and 'Don't Look Down'
And 'Someone Save Temptation', and

Please, remember me
As in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees
And fast asleep
Aside the lions and the ladies
That called you what you like
And even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see
A trapeze
Swing as high as any savior, but

Please, remember me
My misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain
And chasing trains
The colored birds above there running
In circles round the well
And where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter's
So bright with cinder gray
And spray paint
'Who the hell can see forever?', and

Please, remember me
Seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees
You turn from me
And said 'The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last'
The clown that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs
The parking lot
Had an element of danger, so

Please, remember me
Finally
And all my uphill clawing
My dear
But if I make
The pearly gates
Do my best to make a drawing
Of God and Lucifer
A boy and girl
An angel kissing on a sinner
A monkey and a man
A marching band
All around the frightened trapeze swingers

Na na na na na

Overall Meaning

The Trapeze Swinger by Iron & Wine is a song about memories, a recollection of various moments that have seemingly lost their significance but nonetheless still lingers in the singer's mind. The song starts with a request to be remembered happily, despite the bruises on his chin, as he recounts the time he spent with a lover counting black cars passing her house. The imagery evokes a sense of innocence and carefreeness, until they were caught in the kitchen with maps, a mountain range, and a piggy bank, something too removed to mention. The song continues to reminisce about Halloween, where they painted their faces white, and the morning after, filled with shame. The verse about the carnival speaks of the time they watched a trapeze act, only to be disappointed when the clown passes by. The chorus, "Please remember me," then repeats throughout the song as a gentle and subtle reminder to not forget these memories.

@Gandaleon

Interesting to read how people have favourite parts of the lyrics. My heart always jumps in my chest when I hear:

"Please, remember me
Seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees
You turn from me
And said 'The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last'"

Especially "never meant to last" ... to me, it says something about learning to let go especially of the things we love and that we cling to. I might be completely off here, but I prefer to understand it that way.

Halloween parties, piggy banks, planning childhood adventures on a map and counting cars passing by - all these little pedestrian moments that seem to mean nothing, but ultimately make up a life. What a weird, amazing dance we’re all part of. I’m 21 years old and am regularly brought to incredulous smiling laughter at the prospect of seeing where it all goes. Peace and love.

@amyfoss9078

PEACE AND lOVE TO YOU!!

@dianerobinson5336

Beautifully articulated thoughts. You so perfectly stated it when you said, "all these little pedestrian moments that seem to mean nothing, but ultimately make up a life." It is the absolute truth!! Keep that curiosity, the smile and the laughter as they will get you through life, regardless of the speed bumps you will encounter in the road, even when they will sometimes feel like mountains. Just one old ladies advise. It certainly has helped me. Have a wonderful life!

@jipsigal

Keep that feeling of incredulity. It will help you weather the storms and lulls of the years ahead of you. 😊

@@dianerobinson5336 You sound like a lovely old lady haha :)

@@andrewkeen3129 Thank you. I would like to think so :) Have a good one!

"I heard from someone you're still pretty, and then they went on to say that the pearly gates had some eloquent graffiti like 'We'll meet again' and 'Fuck the man' and 'Tell my mother not to worry'" is one of the best lines anybody's ever written, I think

@jackiemamamill2280

Right? People say his lyrics suck —- just means they don’t get it.

@paulbancroft2812

I’m right there with you... at least I’ve never been so thoroughly fucked in all manner by words before
