I stumbled across this video and I have to say, your title was great!! Having been a collector of luxury wrist watches for 44+ years, spending 18+ of those in the biz, with the last 9+ as a Certified Master Horologist and co-proprietor of a luxury vintage/pre-owned shop in the REAL horological world, I had never seen anything as worthless as 97-98%+ of the virtual horological world YTubers, most of whom didn't even own a mechanical watch 8-10 years ago, much less a luxury piece.

You touched on 5-6 areas that are very prevalent in today's horological virtual world. I spend a good bit of time on FB, am pretty active in a number of groups and this video would be a great primer for those new to the hobby or even those looking to buy one or possibly two nice watches.

I got into vintage watches because of their size. For years it was impossible to find a new watch between 35 and 37mm, larger watches I find too obvious on my 7 inch wrist. Indeed, after many expensive mistakes (the learning curve) I finally know what to look for (and what to avoid) in a vintage watch. Now, all of a sudden, dinner plate watches are going out of style and there is a variety of 36 to 38mm modern watches available. I am having a field day - and an empty bank account :)

A watch is like a car — it’s functional. Gives you the time, gets you where you want to go. Collecting anything can become an addiction. What I like about this video is his fairly nuanced discussion of values — we may want something, but wanting is not needing. If we admit it is something we want, then we can evaluate whether the purchase fits into our values. Or time horizon. Delayed gratification is a skill many people lack. I’ve always thought the IWC Portofino Automatic Moon Phase is gorgeous, but I have not been committed to this potential purchase over other values (other ways to spend money).

I have never understood people who buy expensive cars then have to worry and baby it to keep its value, constantly having anxiety about every potential scratch and ding it could possibly receive. This may be less of a concern for someone who is very wealthy and has less concern with resale value.
This is why I like to stick within my means you live a much less stressful life that way.

Meh, putting Daniel Wellington and Gucci in the same sentence is ignorant, the Swiss made fashion labels like Gucci and Versace are completely fine quality wise for the price point with saphire glass and Swiss movements. Not really a difference to a Victorinox quartz (appart from their anti shock technology in some watches)

Great video. I was the same in the beginning buying just one brand Zeppelin. Now into this hobby about 5 years now I’ve concentrated on rare hard to find sport watches I have never liked luxury flashy, fashion watches. I tend to love watches with rare complications such as vintage Timex Time, Tide, Compass, linear chronographs and fly back chronographs. Yes I know Timex, but they actually have great watches. My more expensive that I love is the vintage railroad 60’s mint Bulova watches with tuning forks. And my latest is the Luminox brand. Anyway that’s my type of collecting. I’ve sold many of the Zeppelins and only kept the ones I “love”.

Dude it's 2021. Basically all watches are more looks than use. Buy watches you want, sure, but don't delude yourself into thinking you ,,need" one. I think generally this guy's advice is mostly spot on, you're going to end up wasting your time, money, energy and be ultimately disappointed with fashion watches or cheap junk. You won't be able to sell it for anything if you eventually want to get out of it etc.

Too right ! I don’t “collect watches” I buy them because I like them ....all of them and I wear all of them. I enjoy getting up and deciding which one to wear depending on my mood and the day’s activities...I have more than 20 watches... ranging from G Shock, Seiko, Parnis, Tommy Hilfiger, and yes a real Omega Seamaster GMT, as well as homages and I don’t give a shit about what watch snobs think about them ....a lot of them have great specs with sapphire Crystal, ceramic bezels etc ...I don’t buy them so that one day I can sell them. It’s not a hobby for me I just like watches ......and I like getting new looks the same as I like getting new looking shoes or jeans.... so don’t really agree with most of this except don’t spend money you don’t have. And who says what size watch is appropriate for my wrist size.....🤣

I thoroughly enjoyed the analysis and I think it's a good subject. I just have couple of concerns: 1. Grail watches are generally very expensive, which is rather prohibitive for trial and error but we all know that you don't really know if a watch is right for you until you try it and spend some time with it. Most people don't have the means to try and find out. It will be a decision base on faith or other people's word to large extend. 2. Me for instance, really like Seiko's diver's look and it is probably the only brand that you can acquire and later easily dispose if it doesn't work out. Micro brand is nice and all but resell is probably going to be tough. Mid tier brands such as oris, Tissot, mido, rado... All have the same problem. Cheaper than grail but you can get stuck with it or lose big chunks of money on resell as they are not that easy to sell if it doesn't work out. Seiko for some reason are very easy to sell in secondary market which makes them better choice for trying out your preferences.

Good advice 👍🏽.. I own 7 fashion watches that I got for around $150 each, and I recently bought a Seiko Presage (which I know is small beans to watch people). However, the quality of the Seiko makes it painfully obvious that I wasted about $1200+ of my money on stuff I’ll never wear now that I have the Seiko. Looking at the total figure, I could’ve bought a beautiful Hamilton or Junghans 😭. I’m crying real tears.

That’s the exact mistake most of us make during our watch collecting journey.
I’ve learned to not burn my wallet on cheap 150 Euros watches apart from my G-Shock 5610 which I adore.
I recently got a beautiful Hamilton Khaki Automatic for just 520 Euros and my next purchase will probably be a Longines or Oris

Very good feature, although I probably bought the Seiko 5 that you bought before the Hamilton Khaki. For sheer reliability, the Seiko is probably more than a match for the khaki. Although only a hardlex crystal and non hacking or hand winding movement, they are nonetheless good watches, that you can make money on if bought from the right place and sold on at a profit. I know I made a few bucks/quid on doing just that, if you’re talking a Seiko SNZG15.

My Grail piece as of right now would probably be a Rolex Daytona. Pretty much probably always going to be out of my reach though. But I love the chronograph look, and luckily there are lots of variety in that market. So while I may never get a Daytona, I saw a Hamilton Jazzmaster Lord Auto Chrono, and fell in love with it. I'm just looking to get started in this hobby, but as of right now, this will probably be piece number 1

Great video. However, I have to disagree with you about settling on a watch that’s not your first choice. They’re many factors to consider with this decision, such as income, your age, and other items that you need/want to purchase. For me, waiting 3-5 years to buy the watch I really want doesn’t make sense. I just had a similar situation with a cabinet I loved and needed. I looked at its price and how long I’d have to save for it and decided against it. I purchased a much cheaper one that I like and am very happy with the decision. I might always think about the other cabinet it but I’m very happy with the decision I made. The same is true for watches in my case.

3. Is a great piece of advice - don’t buy compromises. Spot on in saying you never forget the watch you really wanted, and the compromise will ultimately cost you more money also owning something you only “like” (in my case, at least). Really like how you followed up with some financial rationale too - saving and investing in something that will hold value in the long term.

All-in-all: Only buy a watch you love, make sure you’ve saved and can afford the watch you buy, buy a watch that will have lasting value for some years to come 👌🏼

When I started my collection, I wanted to stick to "affordable" watches, and planned to purchase certain categories:
Beater watch, Dress watch, Dive watch, Solar watch, Chronograph, GMT, tool watch. I wanted to have a mix of Quartz and Autimatic watches, and that was easy. Two other categories I wanted were Power reserve watch, and completely manual watch. I finally found a manual wind power reserve watch in the affordable category, but I hesitated for a day to make sure that was the one I wanted. The next morning it was sold out everywhere. So, I signed up for a notice when the watch would be available. A month later, I got an email at 8am saying it was back in stock, and at 9am I tried to buy the watch but it was sold out. This created a pitfall I think is easy to fall into. Panic buying because you think the watch you want will become unavailable. So far, I have been able to resist buying a $600 watch that keeps getting sold out, but I fear the next time it comes available, I may lose my focus and jump. I am not even sure if it is a watch I want or need, but I like the looks, and am tempted. I hope I can learn to resist.

Just remember, you will end up wanting something else. And something else.

The ability to resist such temptation is a valuable skill, perhaps more valuable than that watch.

Great video, thanks! It's amazing how these rules can be applied to other collections too. I collect anime figures (which can get pricey REALLY fast), and a lot of rules I have for myself are similar. For example:
Does it bring you joy?
Do you use/display it?
Get it if you're going to regret getting a cheaper one later.
If you're not completely satisfied, don't get it.

I have amassed more than a few watches, the initial ones were workhorses (Seiko, Casio) in my twenties. The Casio's came in handy while in the Navy (as I could leave an RCA on my nuclear-powered boat without losing it due to higher than background radiation levels from a luminescent dial...lost a Seiko diver once for this reason).
After business school, and while still single, I bought my first grail watch (investment grade)...a Rolex Submariner 16613, which I enjoy to this day. Another five years down the road...a Glashutte Senator (18kt, 39 jewels) dress watch.
Both of these watches are special to me, but I do not wear them daily anymore and tend to save them for special occasions. Given their higher value, I find them impractical while on travel; especially to less secure venues. Bottom line...I value my arm more than any watch.
Today, my daily drivers are typically homages (SteelDive, etc) with Seiko NH35A movements OR watches my late father had collected 10-15 years ago. Most of his watches were "Swiss Made" micro brands with VJ7750 or ETA movements; fine pieces acquired before Swatch Group constrained sales of its VJ and ETA movements to non-Swiss brands. My dad had amassed quite a collection of these watches from sub-luxury houses like Invicta, Philip Watch, Chase Durer, Renato, Android (now Aragon)...most with Swiss (automatic or quartz) movements. I tend to wear his collection the most these days. Some of these pieces have maintained or increased in value, given the origin of the respective movements. Others have lost value as the brands themselves have lost appeal. Don't care, they have greater sentimental value to me.

Great video! Completely agree with faux vintage and limited edition watches not holding value in the future. I too have purchased way too many $500ish watches. They are easy to pick up instead of the seemingly daunting tasj of saving for a more expensive piece. I’m in the stage now of selling them off to fund larger purchases. Just seems to be a common trend in collecting! Stay healthy buddy!

Amazing advises on the right time. I'm currently searching for watches...or one watch. And I actually had in mind to buy one perfect but expensive watch or several low- or mid-range watches *also consider Seiko 5). But as I know myself I could be unlucky for long term und by me an expensive watch anyway. Which would mean paying twice.
The same point I agree to the watch sizes. I have a very small wrist. The perfect size would be 38mm. But the smallest giod watch I could found was 40mm and the others are even bigger. Which looks like a tower clock on my wrist. But unfortunately these days the watch sizes became all quite big. The only watches fitting on my wrist are quartz watches.
So I will check and overlook my plans.

New subscriber and new into watches (besides my many Timex Marathon watches which were the best watches during my 30 years of running). The Hamilton Khaki Auto you mentioned is the first watch I only just recently purchased after weeks of research and agonizing over what would be my first quality piece. I was very pleased that you mentioned it as it confirms, ( along with a few other reviewers) that I made a good choice. I wont be a serious collector but I'd like to get one or two others over the next few years. I work outdoors and do a lot of outdoor activities year round so I'm looking for watches to fit that lifestyle. Thanks!

Well...2 years later, your video still is very useful, some predictions were spot on..except for larger watches. They are still around, not just Invicta either. With my 23 cm wrist...I don't wear anything under a 45 mm...and besides my vintage watches...95% of my watches are 47mm+. There are lots of guys & gals who still like the larger watches...and as long as demand is high for them...they will be made.

Spot on advice.

In regards to the lots of affordable watches vs. 1 or two grail pieces, I think the most important thing is to have your end goal in mind. If you really have your heart set on a luxury watch, then yeah, save up and go for it and pass on the lesser affordable options. But if you're on a budget and would rather have some more variety, I don't think there's anything wrong with aspiring to a collection of affordable pieces. The other thing is, I think the "affordable phase" is actually a really helpful phase to go through as a watch collector. It might not be the quickest or most efficient route to getting to a luxury timepiece, but I think learning personally from collecting mistakes is a valuable thing that can help you hone in on what sort of luxury watch you really want to invest in.

The problem of saving up to a "Grail" piece that you can't normally afford is the cost of ownership. I will always agree with the notion that watch collecting and Luxury watch collecting are two different hobbies, and every enthusiast out there should have that in mind.

As a female watch lover, I would have to agree with what everything you said. Although, I do not have really expensive tastes. In saying that, I still only buy watches from WATCH companies and not fashion houses. I know they are not high end, but I do love them. I have a Seiko a Michele, an Invicta Sub Aqua, 2 G-shocks, 2 Bulovas and a Tissot.

@ratdad48 Yes, female watch lover here. And I just upgraded my Samsung Cell phone and it came with a free smart watch (yikes)! I know, I know....it's not a real watch. But it was free! Anyway, Samsung smart watches are round, so they can somewhat pass as a regular watch. Especially when I changed out the band, a silicone diver-like band that has an attached bezel and there are dozens of different faces you can swap out. Heck, you don't even have to use the smart watch as a smart watch, just a versatile, shape-shifting watch sports watch, like a G-shock or you can switch it out for a leather band and analog face for a dressy watch look.

This was a good video and pretty much followed the beginning of my watch collection.
Against all advice, my 1st watch was a $40 vintage Ricoh from India! I researched for a week, like I was buying, well something more than $40! And guess what? When it arrived it was beautiful! A magnificent green fumé dial, applied indices in gold tone and matching hands. That applied Ricoh brand at 12, an applied Ricoh maple leaf at 9 and a vertical day/date at 6. I was told everything was original and it certainly looks like it externally. I haven't taken a look at the movement, but it still performs reliably to this day. One of my dress watches now 🙂
I moved into an Invicta Pro-Diver next - Coke 'Omega' shaped bezel over a pearlescent white dial. I didn't know that I was buying a Subby Homage at the time, I was just buying a Dive Watch that I liked and could afford. Again - still wear it (on a rally style tropical). Next was a reverse panda Invicta Speedway - silver tone subdial surrounds and a stainless tachemetré bezel. I still wear that too, on a vintage leather strap.
Then I got into vintage Vostok, found a seller on eBay with good feedback and bought a Komandirskie in a Ministry case with a maroon 'spider' dial. Paid about $60, and again it arrived in great shape, so I started dealing with him direct and have quite the collection of Vintage Soviet era time pieces. Some of which are very beautiful examples of Amphibia and Komandandkie that you don't see every day and the only 2 I've had trouble with were broken by me and my inexperience with Vintage watches and that quirky Vostok crown.
Since then, I've really settled in to a good formula.
I don't have alot of money due to being a single dad with a daughter who needs full-time care at home. So I buy watches on the cheaper end. $300USD-ish is the most I've spent on a single piece (Bulova Lunar Pilot & Certina DS Podium) and I've got a number of $100 - $150USD pieces. I'm a collector - I don't flip & I've broken every rule in the book and luckily - it hasn't come back to bite me in the arse!...and I wear every single watch I have.
The only watch I regret buying is a Chinese 'Peter Lee' Milgauss homage. I don't regret it 'cause It's a crap watch. I like the watch, & it's got great specs (in fact it's on my wrist now!) but it looks so close to a Milgauss I'm too scared to wear it outside of the house, even after putting it on a green leather rally strap!

Extremely helpful video. 🤘 Started my journey with a knock off classic G Gucci watch from a street vendor in PA. Loved that watch when $50 is what I could afford. Now i'm more of a Hamilton Open Heart kinda guy. It's a slow process and there's no need to rush it. 😉 This video will save a lot of people time. Get what you love, couldn't have said it any better. But, really that should apply to everything in life. Do things for yourself without any concern for input from others. 💯 Especially when it comes to what you like to wear.

All pretty solid advice in my opinion. I also bought a Seiko 5 thinking it would be enough to keep me happy, and instead ended up buying the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date that I wanted originally. On the other hand I picked up a C65 Trident Auto to "substitute" for a BB58, and now I love the C65 so much I may not bother spending the extra cash for the Tudor.

My uncle gave me his seiko chronograph back in 2018. He's been using that for years before he gave it to me. Still looks and works flawless to this day and I only needed to change the battery once!

I completely agree with you. When I first started my journey, I was only able to afford pagani design, seikos, orient, etc. Even though I have attained substantially more expensive pieces, I still enjoy wearing them.

good list. :) I already have my holy grail watch and now I am constantly searching out watches who can just be fun. sometimes opting out big change for something which has just a perfect color combination and everything around it is great. and sometimes I opt out for an homage, because I don't think it is necessary to buy the "real" thing to get some satisfaction out of it. an example would be the Seiko Willard. the vintage piece is highly outdated and the modern prospex line is not my type. I wanted that 70s feeling but with a better movement and overall wear quality. so I opted out for a small change for an homage with the same rubberstrap and overall vintage movie look instead of paying a premium for a vintage watch I would be to scarred to wear like military did back in that time. so it is more of a beater.

with homage I don't mean replica. that would be totally silly. ^^

I agree with you to a degree. As a WIS for the last 15 years, and interested in watches since I was little, I can say that knowing what you like is not always something people just know. Tastes often evolve via experience. I'm an Affordable Watch guy but I have owned higher end watches. Owned a Rolex and sold it for a variety of reasons including the ADs attitude problems and the antics of the company. Own Seikos, and wear them regularly, because they are great watches. After working through a variety of affordable watches, and several higher end like Rolex and Omega, I finally figured out what I wanted and liked and bought a Sinn 757UTC - and lo and behold I was on the Watch wagon for 5+ years as a result. So, I agree about fashion watches, replicas, living within your means and delaying gratification, and trendy watches (50mm is too small??? seriously I saw that comment more than once) but affordable watches from reputable companies can really help you appreciate what it is that you want, what you are willing to pay, and through the process give you a lot of enjoyment. The best watch I own is a Dutch "Swiss" Prisma from around 1970 with a 6-sided (honeycomb shape) case. Paid EUR 1,50 for it in barely running condition plus 70 on restauration. Not worth the money I spent, but just love the look and have yet to find as much as a picture of it online. So rare and yet worthless... well, not to me ;-)
My second favorite is a 50's one from Eastern Germany. Started running after I hit it a few times and never stopped.
I have many watches (over 100) including proper Swiss ones and commercial brand ones. Rarely pay more than a Euro each. Yes, you can find running mint Armani for a Euro, box included. Not fake. Or a used condition running good brand Switch watch from the 40's for a Euro.

I think the cheaper homage watches, like Pagani Design, have come a long way, especially when you compare them to overhyped watches (Moonswatch). That said, I agree that it is better to save up and buy 1 or 2 top quality watches than a whole pile of cheap watches. I'm saving up for a used Omega Speedmaster Reduced.

My personal tip is to write down all the watches you currently want. Once per year. And see what sticks.
By seeing how my list has changed I've managed to keep from buying quite a few watches.

I saw the Tissot PRX 40 quarz online a few days ago and bought one in blue yesterday as I already was in Switzerland this week. I loooove It and I feel its design will hold up fine for decades. Also the process of buying it in the Store rather than online is something I can recommend. The lady who worked was very professional and good her job. Just made the experience that much better. And what is wearing a expensive, well made watch other than a experience we choose to pay the extra money for? Normally I have a Casio Gw-m5610 which is perfect as a tool to tell me the time and anything else would be a downgrade when it comes just to that function. I mean the Casio is accurate to the second all year around and has way more functionality. But the PRX just gives the this feeling of something that is engineered to a much higher level and is screaming quality every time I look at it. Switzerland is a dangerous country for my wallet, as I also love Swiss Army knives...

Your story is my story. All of my affordable watches are respected by the community, and liked by me, but I only wear/love 4 of them. I am focusing on grail watches moving forward. I only want to wear things that really impress me. I see watches that are tempting because I like them and buying releases endorphins but I’ve learned to ignore that urge, and focus on what I really want, regardless of cost.

I understand that I'm late on this video but I do have an opinion in the matter. My personal belief is that if I can find a cheaper watch (Under $100) that I love and know I'll use, I will get use out of it. I've just been using this as my personal watch-buying terms. I enjoy wearing different watches that match the clothing I wear. I also don't have to worry about having a $500+ piece of metal on my wrist at all times.

500$ is still very much entry level, but at around that point you get significantly better construction, materials and finish. Also there's actually a point in repairing it, should it get damaged. If you have experience with nicer watches and didn't feel any difference, great. If you have no experience, keep it that way since even a 500$ watch makes a 80$ watch feel like a joke.

Thanks for the advice. I purchased a vintage Zenith as the third to my collection. It was advertised as new-old-stock. Because it is now dry of lubricant, and because watchmakers are unable to get vintage Zenith parts, it has to go to Zenith for service. This might cost me over $1,000, to be determined. So be careful.

I fully agree with you on generally being wary of buying an "homage"/copy/knockoff...take that money and put it toward the real thing, maybe look for something used. Nothing black and white, and there can be exceptions. But in general aim for your goal, don't compromise, and make due with what you have in the meantime...Great video.

You had me at #2. Worst watch purchase (over $150, you get what you pay for) I ever made was a $400 Michael Kors. It even looked nice for a few weeks before I learned the hard way that the glass was not scratch resistant nor water resistant. I took it for a free repair like I got with my Kennth Cole watch (which is still going strong at 15+yrs) and they laughed at me. The crown was so poorly designed that I needed to carry a small screw driver to pull it out and adjust the time when I would land in a different time zone. Never again. I haven’t bought anything with a Kors label since.

lol....I just read "Michael Kors" and laughed. Sorry--most people dont realize those--fashion name brand watches have 99 cent "movements" in them. Ugh--the QUALITY vintage watch you could have gotten. I just got a 1920s Waltham in PERFECTLY new condition for 75 bucks. The band is going for 35-45 dollars all day on Ebay--let alone a prefect dial with Art Decco guilded numbers and winds and runs like a dream. I havent taken the back off yet but I am thinking this is 14k white gold. Not a filled gold, either. I'll find out later today. Im like a kid in a candy store and want to make a "big deal" of removing its back and seeing the movement.

While I agree with most of you points, I myself love a variety of different watches to match my mood of the day. I agree that you should never buy a replica watch , I do not mind buying a good quality homage watch that look similar to some high end watches that I can not justify spending thousands for. Sometimes I also like the quirky look of some of the less expensive Indian, russian, Casio and micro brand watches, but I am aware of what I am getting. My main point is to buy what you like and can afford. I do not run with a crowd thar are impressed with watches anyway so I buy for my own satisfaction. Peace all.

The most important watch I’ve ever owned was a relic watch. Fossil/ relic (same company) names their watches.. woman’s watches at least. I had the all silver version of the watch “Olivia” it’s an absolutely stunning watch and it was my first “real” watch. Everyone at work always told me not to wear it. I understood because of the type of work I did. However I couldn’t part with it. Felt naked without it. That watch survived warehouse work, swimming, camping, hunting, playing… fall of 2020 the crown/ stem fell out. I actually just shipped it to the company today for repair. I’m having the crystal cover fixed while it’s already there. 4 years of extreme ware and it only has just a couple deep scratches in it. By all rights should be more. To someone else it’s just a $100 watch that’s made to be affordable but to me it was so much more. Whether fashion, expensive, cheap, silver, gold, plastic… if YOU love it then buy it.

Great review! I just subbed. I’ve been rebuilding my watch “collection” over the past year after having a small but VERY nice collection I had to liquidate a few years back. While I learned not to buy fashion or fakes, I have been going down the rabbit hole of purchasing multiple $200-500 watches (quality brands you mentioned) after not having any real nice pieces for a few years🙃Being a watch fanatic my whole life I started buying all the Sieko, Orient, Bertucci, etc. that I could again start to afford that reminded me of the Grand Seiko Snowflake, the Rolex OP (which are reasonable with patience), and the Hamilton Khaki🤔THANK YOU for saving me from spending $thousands$ more on watches I only really “like” and don’t love👍

The problem, (for me anyway) with saving up to buy a really nice watch is that once I have the money saved I inevitably decide not to buy the watch and instead put more money to retirement, a large business expense, etc. With watches that are in the 1-2 week's disposable income category I just buy it and don't eat out for a couple weeks and have something I really like and use. If I ever did spend a year's worth of disposable income on a watch I know I'd immediately regret the purchase and feel like I'd just wasted a non-trivial amount of money. I wouldn't be able to enjoy having the watch for years, assuming I didn't just immediately try to resell it.

I can't imagine having 40, I feel like 8 is too much but the one's I don't wear, (Orient Bambino, a couple Seikos from early on, a Bulova quartz that was a gift) are too cheap to try to resell, so they just stay in the box. I would love to have an Lange at some point, but I would need to be a multi-millionaire to be able to justify it to myself. So instead I have a few watches in the 1-3k range that I really like that I don't feel bad about owning and wearing. Mon-Fri it's a nice JDM Casio beater, and then on the weekend or vacation I have a couple divers, a gmt, and a nomos dress watch. Squale, Lorier, Baltic, etc are my range atm, the Nomos was a stretch; that's where I'm at for this point in my life anyway. 10k spent on a watch I feel like is taking 50-80k out of my retirement 20y from now.

You touched on something that is a quirky neurosis of mine. With many different things I realized I didn't 'want it'. I wanted to want it if that makes any sense. Coveting something and getting it was the payoff, not having it. I'm not sure how terrible of a personal flaw that is unless it goes unchecked. I have to ask myself am I really going to have pride of ownership once I own this? I think the remedy for it is to take the things you already have and treat them like they're the most special things in the world. "That's just an old bucket but its my old bucket, dammit.' When you do that an inanimate object just seems to take on that energy. One pair of shoes but they're well polished and cared for. They become the special thing you were chasing with a credit card.

Great video! I do enjoy the thrill of the hunt for sure. Getting that killer deal is great. I’m at a point now where I don’t enjoy copy/ homage watches. My favourite watches are when they are hard to find and are its own thing. Never over pay for a watch! I research the shit out of a given watch and make sure that I would be able to resell it for what I purchased it for or more if and when I want to move on from it.

The most I ever spent was for the Hamilton Pilot automatic seen it the Interstellar movie. $650 was a good buy and it is still one of my favorites. I take it out and wear it when I am tempted to spend more than $500 on a new watch I don't need and rightly decide a new watch won't be better than my Hamilton. Good review.

I love living in South East Asia, it's really easy to get fashion watches at the prices that reflect their value on shopping apps. When I check the prices for the exact same model on the western market or the official websites, the markup is insane. Most of them are dropship, I'll see the exact same models where the main difference is the branding/logo.

I have daily worn a kinetic Yema Seaspider since 2003. A few years ago, the diode was replaced. I just wanted a change. I put the Yema back in the original box because of the rarity. So, I bought a Casio Duro and a Stuhrling Depthmaster. Both quartz. I love the Casio. I love the looks of the Stuhrling, but the Casio has it beat. The Stuhrling seems to be on the same level as the Invicta Pro Diver. BTW, I am the most frugal person I know.

in my experience the cheaper the watch the better. My first watch cost $60 back in the 80's. It lasted less than 6 months.
I kept buying a new one about every 6 month for a couple of year until I decided to go for a $30 one. It lasted about a year.
About 10 years ago I started buy $10 walmart watches and they've each lasted me over a year, all the way up to 2 years in some cases..
With watches your pretty much paying for branding.

For me, it took buying and owning mid tier watches to get an idea of what my grail watch would be.

If I'd started with the grail watch, I probably would have made a big mistake buying something I didn't like as much as I thought, or something that wasn't worth (to me) what I was paying for it.

If you only wanted to try one or two watches from a cheaper brand or homages, then that’s good. But most people once they started to buy affordable watches, they’ll kept on buying different styles in the same money range… Or triggers happy. After a year, you Now have 15 $150 watches that worth nothing. So, just be careful when you are ready to go down this rabbit hole of a hobby.

@Michael B. I don’t think a watch is an investment unless they are in the ultra-luxury spectrum. If you are willing to dig a little deeper into luxury watches even basic to entry luxury brands, you will find great values in pre-owned watches that are amazingly engineered and you will wanting to wear it everyday. And you can sell them back for even greater money or break even. This is why I said 15 of $150 watches that worth nothing, because they are. Plus, everyone will have their own price ranges in their purchasing powers. It’s hard to argue because of it.

At the end, if you are happy with trigger happy purchasing, then that is your choice. But if you wanted to go deeper into the luxury watches world, then, maybe restrain yourself to save for a killer watch that you wanted to wear everyday.

Great video and some sound advice for the noobie watch collector. I've been collecting for over 30 years and have 105 watches. My advice to the new guys is to buy what excites you. If you want to be trendy, then buy the latest fashion watch. If you want to show off then save some cheddar up and go for that super expensive Rolex that's easily recognizable (but pretty boring). If you want to stand out and be unique then there are TONS of choices out there that aren't that expensive (and some that are insanely expensive). Grab yourself a Tourneau magazine it will broaden your horizons. And also watch some, how a watch works videos. Education is your best friend. You'll learn about what makes a quality watch worth the money and keep you from wasting money on trash watches that are expensive just because of the name. .. Also learn how to properly pronounce the high end watch brands.. Jaeger LeCoultre, Ulysse Nardin and Vacheron Constantin are NOT pronounced like most of us Americans think they are. hahahaaaa. But most of all have fun with it. It's a great hobby.

So many years later I was searching around on offer up and I found it. The Replica watches today are amazing. I'm blown away by the quality every time I see one. The value is also amazing. You can get a 904L with a high quality automatic movement and Sapphire crystal for under $200. If the replica bothers you then you can get it to say Didun or Parnis. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like people trash these watches just to fit in.

I have had a few low budget nice ones in my time.
Recently I have been thinking I need a new watch, I don't have any at the moment. I have pretty much decided on a Vostok (Boctok) classic style, and they're pretty cheap, 80 or 90 quid.
I was tempby a Sturmanskie Gagarin but 40mm is too big and 33 too small.
I've just seen a Butex, from 1975, but un used, with papers but no box. I'm very tempted 🤔

I agree with many points, I went nuts buying micro brands that only cost less than “1000$” I must have well over a dozen. I enjoyed watching Tubers review them, pulling the trigger, waiting to get them, unboxing them only to store them in my tier 3 watch box. I’ll give them away as presents to friends and family. What a waist of money, for me anyway. Better wait to get top tier watches, which for me spans lowish priced Seiko’s all the way to stuff like H Moser, for me and in my collection.

Don't necessarily disagree with everything here but I do like my Seiko 5 Sport, also my "homage" Captain Willard Steeldive (wear it swimming, good specs, cost me little), a used Victorinox I got for $85 on eBay, love that one too. Great advise. It's always good to find your niche early in the hunt. I found that I enjoy Seiko watches. Sure a Rolex or Omega would be great, but for me, I will never let myself buy something that expensive. Like trucks. Sure a truck can cost $70 to 80K but I've always rocked the $5000 oldies with pre-loved marks. Even If I get a new one, it will be the $40k version. Just find what you like and make sure that you will be happy with your purchase from $10 to $10,000.

Unlike trucks or other vehicles, you can actually wear and enjoy expensive mechanical watches without destroying 90% of their value. Vehicles have been getting worse over time as more of their cost is more from electronic parts than mechanical, and the electronics go obsolete faster than the mechanical components.

@timewave02012 a good argument but a little bit out of context imo. A vehicle surely depreciated over time but it is a necessity that get you from point A to point B on daily basis to bring bread home. It is considered a working tool to provide a living. On the other hand, a luxury watch is a “want” and it is neither good or bad depends on your financial situation. However, a well known watch with lot of history can appreciate over time but that doesn’t mean it is a better investment than a depreciated vehicle that provide a living. And a range of vehicle makers, prices, and luxury is another long topic to tap into…

@Little Jackalo I have definitely fallen into that category. There are some inexpensive watches out there that I do really like, and I still wear the first few watches I bought myself. Though, now I'm much more interested in the mid tier luxury watches.

My only grail is the Santos de Cartier, any watch that I get that isn’t that, is gonna definitely be waaay more cheap. I don’t mind quartz or even homage watches. Currently looking at a $60 tank homage, haven’t seen it talked about much but I spotted it and since I have a small wrist, I thought It’d be a good buy just as a cheap throw around quartz watch that I can wear everyday and not care about messing it up. But I own other watches like the skx and the xnxs79, a few casios, a pretty nice Nixon dress watch (which was my first watch I’ve ever bought on my own without outside influence) I needed it for prom lol but it’s really nice and beats any fashion brand watch. I also bought a vintage seiko (I did my research on it) but other than that I don’t plan on wasting money on every cheap watch I see. I think I’m good with what I have now. Will definitely add the 35mm prx when it comes out

This is so true, I once liked watches and picked up a few nice ones (I never bought fashion garbage btw) However, as I've grown I've looked at some I have and probably won't wear one or two. My taste has now developed over time. I'm not prepared to go out and drop 15k on an over marketed Rolex but I'd now go for mid range swiss watches all day long...Oris, Certina, Omega, Panerai, Longines, Hamilton.....I could go on. He's so right though. Why have 4 average watches when you could have one real nice one. And don't think having a top end watch will impress anyone, you're limited on where you can wear it, if you have class you wouldn't mention it anyway and no-one really cares. Build a collection and go for quality over quantity 👍

Omega and their engineering clearly are better than Rolex. (I own 2 Rolex watches and 3 Omegas.) This statement has nothing to do with sour grapes. The Metas certification and continued development of the Omegas, blows away Rolex. And I do love my Explorer. But my Railmaster is sooooo much better.

I have a minor disagreement with your 'wait and save' assertion. I have a couple of direct examples. I really wanted a Bertucci Defender...$600-700 watch, but I had no experience with any Bertucci on my wrist. I did buy the D3 (with compass attachment) in the typified A-10 case, same strap material, same general look, for about $150. I found it amazing, relegated the lesser Bertucci to my frequent Algonquin trips, and, knowing it was a good purchase for me, purchased the Defender. I followed the same concept in pursuing the Rolex OP/Date style, and found a Tissot PR50 Titanium at my local B&M watch service for $100 as a drop off that didn't come back. I loved this watch before I bought it, had it on my wrist before, but not as a wear. Having some time with it, I determined purchasing it's equivalent style Rolex would work for me (currently 'watching' a few Tudor Princes)...and am keeping the PR50 as a general wear. Spending a reasonable amount, for a good quality watch regardless, in order to find out whether to take the plunge is worth it. I could've spent thousands, found out I didn't like it, and lost the equivalent of the PR50 in value on a re-sale, instead, I'll have two quality watches that I know I like. I do understand if you're 'on a budget'...but realistically, if you're on a budget that limits you from spending $100 to get a feel...then perhaps you shouldn't be spending thousands + on a watch and instead consider some Retirement investment. :)

I would add something about point 4: yes, only buy if you can afford, when you can afford. But also look at the environment: are you very likely to get mugged for the watch you're wearing in your daily environment/city/region? You could probably afford a Rolex, but then get mugged immediately after leaving the shop, or on your first trip in public transportation.

I think that is good advice, but it depends on how deep you want to go. You didn't mention self builds, which are one of the most fascinating aspect of this watch thing. For the price of an £80.00 ETA movement, dial and hand set for say 30 and a case for another 45, you have a watch that, if done right, you will cherish forever as it has a bit of you in it. I have built a 14060 and I am just about to start a 1016 build, a watch that I would like that I cannot justifying dropping 20k on. If it breaks, I mend it. If I cannot, in goes another 80 quid movement. I even built a man on the moon with all original and brand new omega parts and had it put together for me by a master watchmaker, saving nearly £1000. It works and looks exactly as the one I bought from the dealer. As long as you are honest if you ever sell them. To me, building is just a stage you go through if you are really hooked, and it is one of the most pleasurable aspects of the watch game.

I am not a watch collector whatsoever. I am just interested in getting a single decent, budget-friendly automatic watch to wear daily and I want to do a little research. Regardless, I find this advice helpful and I think anyone can benefit from it. I've made some of the same mistakes as a fountain pen collector, and even putting that hobby aside, I found myself considering how I could be doing things differently from a budgeting standpoint.

Out of my collection of 12 watches, two are my favorites; a Winner 503 tank for $80 and a Oris that was much more lol. I wear these two the most, the next one in my mind is a Zeppelin.

I'm pretty much a watch person, I don't wear a lot of jewelry but I've always felt naked without a watch. I've bought many over the years, cheaper one's to wear to work (factory) and more expensive one's when not at work. I love Anne Klein watches but recently bought an Invicta, which I liked and it worked fine. My big surprise with the Invicta, which never happened even with the cheaper watches I've owned is, in a little less than a year the battery died. This wouldn't have bothered me with the cheaper watches but for what I paid for the Invicta, having a dead battery that fast kind of ticked me off.

A lot of the watch collecting Youtubers usually suggest that you avoid buying Invictas. They are said to be terrible and not worth your hard earned money.

I was looking for a new watch. I found a watch I immediately fell in love with, but it was way over the price I was looking to spend. In the end I saved up for it and I couldn't be happier about doing so. It was a Seiko Alpinist (the Ginza edition).

Unpopular opinion: watches serve different purposes for different people at different times. Most of us start with fashion watches because we know the brands and they go with our outfits and they are generally cheap enough so there is no harm. Whatever gives you a dopamine hit and makes you fall in love with watch collecting is a good thing.

If it wasn't for Armani Xchange and Kenneth Cole watches i bought in college, I wouldn't have caught that bug that lead to a collection I'm thankful for everyday now that ranges from AP to G Shock and everything in between. The best watch is the one that you are excited to wear (unless it's an apple watch...yuck lol)

Good advise. I've been guilty of buying quantity over quality when I was younger and had less money, but now regret buying many of what I have during those days. These days I am very selective.
