Jefferson is my favorite President in the 1st Century of the USA. (*)
This is one of the most important actions/explorations in recorded History, and it gets maybe 3 pages in a History Textbook.

Truely an underrated piece of History. To imagine them actually making a successful roundtrip journey is amazing in and of itself. To do so with all the materials, supplies, necessities, boats, and People, is mind boggling!

It deserves a complete set of Books that follow the Journals, provides the Profiles and Biographies of Lewis and Clark, all the men that participated, from birth throughout their lives.

It is one of the most Successful endeavors of its level, ever.

The energy involved: Physical energy, "Thought energies", and Emotional energies, all being the success, but the Thought Energy is the actual point of the subject and it success, ("Universal Law of Attraction"). and *it having been "under the Presidency of Jefferson", an ethical, intelligent, and highly educated, Founding Father of this USA.
▶ (Our personal lives are fully a seperate and private subject.)
▶ (Unless one is causing abuse, involving children, a threat to the wellbeing of Country, it is none of any other person's business and no judging is appropriate, particularly when one has limited facts and zero experience regarding the subject.)

There was no mention of Patrick Gass in this biography ,he coined the the term" corps of discovery " in his book about the expedition written in 1807. Gass was their master carpenter he led the building of the forts ,he built the dugout canoes and wagons for the journey. There many great men in this expedition that without them this journey would have failed.

I was going to read the comments but then I realized there are none. I think this journey was absolutely crazy for it’s time, but their journey is absolutely incredible. I almost wish I could see the amazing landmarks before they were famous today. Imagine being one of the first colonizers to see the rocky mountains? Niagara Falls? My best friend, growing up in the1960s, was a 5x great nephew of Meriwether Lewis, His mother’s name was Meriwether Lewis. He was a great adventurer too. When he was 16 he got between his mom and his stepdad and was shot and killed by his stepdad. If he had lived, my life would’ve been a lot different. We would’ve had lots of adventures. How amazing it must have been to explore a land none of your countrymen before you had explored and traveled. To see animals none of your countrymen had seen before from the Great Plains to the rockies to the desert to the pacific.. we all owe these men a tip of the cap.. whether you agree with "manifest destiny" and all it brought with it or not, you still have to be thankful it happened, otherwise you wouldn't be here anyways. Things had to happen just as they did for you to ever experience life.

There’s no mention of John Colter at all in this biography. He was my 4x great grandfather. He was sent out ahead of the expedition to scout the land before the rest followed along. Was the first to see the geysers at Yellowstone. He made a few more trips out west, guiding fur trappers along the way.

Maybe he is mentioned in the Ken Burns “Corps of Discovery” documentary. Technically this video is a biography of L&C, where as the Burns doc details the whole trip and several of the other individuals on the journey. You should check it out! Perhaps he’s in there!

Huh? I’m from Oregon and Washington and never heard anyone say this ever. They’re legends and honored for their travels. I lived in seaside where they set up salt works and walked back to ft clatsop. The lack of fights with natives says a lot about how things were before mass migration of Europeans

Hardly,, 34 men started the trip in 33 men returned that's amazing!
There is nothing sad or tragic this is an epic moment in the history of our country where these men made it all the way across the continent! They didn't get eaten by a grizzly bear!
The average male in 1804 in the city lived about 40 to 45 years old .......mountain men lived about 65 because they ate mainly wild game and a few herbs and roots .
Without Lewis and Clark you wouldn't be here! If you live in the usa!

The weapons that the native were most impressed with were air rifles. It took forever to pump up, but when filled they fired rapid fire with great effect. Can be found in “undaunted courage”.

Each night they would plot their position with the stars. They knew where the Pacific Coast was, and where they were. The distance from St. Louis was way, way more than the distance to the coast, and they knew there were mountains ahead. They (actually, Clark) calculated that there MUST be large falls somewhere up river, and soon. Lewis went overland (quicker than by canoe) to find them - and he did!

Traveling on a river may at first seem a faster more lucid means of movement, but NOT always! Also when you totally rely on a river, you become a prisoner to it, because it becomes your ONLY road! But, traveling on land allows for adjustment(s) to be made, such as speed of motion, change(s) in direction/routing, and when to be stationary!
It can very illusory to simply assume that river travel means ~ease of motion~ !!! Fascinating history! Sadly this very important part of American history isn't made part of at least junior high school studies! There's so very much great information within it's content! Cultural differences which are very important, is just ONE of the many important lessons that school kids can benefit from!!!!

A great adventure, indeed. But this territory proved to be hostile to permanent settlement. Bitter, cold winters (north near Canada), rain was scarce, few natural resources, hostile Indians, the L.T. land has low populations today. Most travellers continued on to the West coast, after climbing the Rockies. Only After the railroads were built, and some gold found, did the easterners come (often to shoot the bison).

Im a huge fan of Edward's and hunt. Bidwell was an inspiration to everyone. Heartbreaking when pratt resorted to cannibalism tho. Shows how unforgiving nature can be. It's a shame they don't get the recognition they deserve. They were technically the first to reach the pacific thanks to the heroics of Mr hunt.

History has anointed Lewis and Clark and those in the corps. as heroes. There is no doubt what they accomplished was heroic. But history gives very little credit to the Indigenous peoples who they encountered. Were it not for Sacagawea and other native peoples along the route, Lewis and Clark and the Corps. of Discovery would have perished in the wilderness.

I come from the Ordway line, my last name should be Ordway, but my paternal grandfather changed it, we don't know why he did this. Sgt John Ordway who was the U. S Army soldier in charge of logistics during the expedition, and second in charge overall, is my 6th cousin, 6x removed. My 4th great Grandfather, John Ordway b. 1764 d. 1813, and Sgt John Ordway b. 1775 d. 1815, were cousins. There is a memorial statue for Sgt John Ordway at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

A little known fact: When Sacajawea (Tsaka’-ka-wia) reunited with her people, guiding the Corps of Discovery, she learned of an orphaned nephew Dear Robe (Basil,) by her deceased sister (Red Willow Woman.) She immediately adopted him. Her own son Baptiste, the one with her on the journey, was later educated in St Louis; as per a promise made by Captain Clark.

I visited the reconstructed Fort where Lewis and Clark wintered on the Shore of the Pacific Ocean! Interesting fact about locating the Fort was the use of a metal detector! V.D. in those days was a common disease as it is today. In those days the patient was treated with Mercury! yes, the same thing used in thermometer

Not sure what you mean by that. Clark grew fond of the infant as Sacajawea took him on the trip with her but the father of the boy was the French fur trader Tousant Charbanaeau. Clark later after the expedition was finished asked permission from Sacajawea to take the boy and raise him, which she granted. The boy was taken back east and educated.

Lewis and Clark got along with the Native Americans because they had no choice. They were the minority... and their mission was to get to the coast, not to do battle. Most tribes they encountered were so under-clothed and under-fed to do much fighting either. So they got along pretty well, out of necessity.

It sounds as if we owe a lot more to Jefferson that we understood at first. He had vision, imagination. He was instrumental in moving America forward. I'm impressed with him the more I learn about him.

He also had the insight to step outside his own box intellectually and set in motion a series of events that would end the 11000 institution of slavery in his very own penned declaration of all men being created equal knowing full well that as a rebellious subject of a distant king that it slavery could not logically last in such a republic he and his fellow colonists proposed. They were looking for a water route across the continent of North America. I suspect that they were convinced that they would need to follow the river to find that and test it’s navigability. Also in play was the fur trade which took place along the rivers. There were wagons for transport across the land but the rivers were still the major travel routes until the railroad was built.

When I was in school back in the 1970’s we learned a lot more about the founding of America than they do in school today.

Traveling on the most prominent river is a guaranteed trip to the top. You could waste years in the forest, and never carry the necessary tools and supplies.

Was watching Ken Burns Baseball doc series. And it stated that Lewis and Clark even played a game of ball with certain tribes. Idk just thought that was cool

Define "a lot", "far more" and "civilized". It's not history that leaves out their nature, it's that americans just retain certain parts of the native/settler interaction. Natives, like all humans, were warlike. They had peace in some areas but did not hesitate to take lands from each other.

The PBS doc “Journey of the Corps of Discovery” is much better detailed.. It’s almost 6 hours long and in 3 parts, and if you can find it, it’s a must see..

Actually, we have little clue of the past facts, particularly since the early 20th Century allowed for the Corporatists to Own and/or Contract Agencies and other branches of the US Gov, ie: "Federal Reserve Bank Corporation"

The global Y chromosome tree is the key to human history.
But it only goes back four or five generations found in men before your ancestry can no longer be traced deeper back in time.
Archeologists have pieced together an actual history with names, dates, places, events of a people in America speaking five languages (a lot harder than English and Spanish) had built and tamed and cultivated America before Columbus.
If we plot the Y chromosomes movement in the American southwest and superimpose it on Lewis ad Clark’s expedition of the Northwest with artifacts found there will be more to the official story handed down to us by Lewis and Clark of what they really saw and encountered of the people already here.

The shame of us entering the west was not living in peace with the Indians. Certainly colonist farming ability along with new herd animals would have been suitable trading partners with Indians in the north in particular who faced harsh winters. I mean think of us unleashing the Sioux and Comanche on the Afghans?
