😂. But the first part is true in my case; the two instruments I have are a Saturn acoustic guitar, and a Kirk Hammett Signature guitar.

I am hoping to eventually get a lute and/or a bass guitar. And I’m planning to give the electric to my little sister once she’s old enough.

I’m a simple man, with simple tastes, instrumentally speaking.

Here are my three guitars (two I’m hoping to eventually get to go with the Saturn):

An Alembic Spoiler bass (due to the fact that I first heard about it from the story of Cliff Burton’s stolen bass [a Spoiler], and have only heard the sound a handful of times).
But also because I’m an “against-the-grain” kind of guy, and want to start as a bassist, with something different (the traditional Squires, P basses, and Ibanezs just don’t roll with me, y’know?)

A Renaissance lute (they’re just so beautiful to both look at and listen to; my interest was kindled thanks to Brandon Acker).

And of course, my treasured Saturn acoustic!! 😎🎸

I have 40+ guitars and have owned over 100. The trick is to change the strings of the few you actually play, and leave the rest in cases. It’s the oil from your fingers that really corrodes them especially combined with the air, and when you own a lot of guitars you really only play a handful (at least in my case). On the ones I don’t play a lot, I honestly change the strings every blue moon.

@vilstef I know this is a bit old, but I'd say go for it! Really a lot of people's struggle is that they start with the wrong kind of instrument, or go for a really expensive one. As he said in the video, it doesn't need to be expensive and most you can find good second-hand. But for me personally, I had to try out multiple instruments (recorder > viola > ocarina) before I settled on the drums, and realized I had a much better time on percussion. As long as you put the time and effort into learning it should come to you if you pick the right one. And it's best to start out with less complicated instruments (which are also usually cheaper, so less money wasted), such as a Cajon if you want percussion, a plastic recorder for woodwinds, etc. Then get a teacher and/or look up resources online to learn (I straight up started learning drums by mimicking performances/covers, and when I got stuck only then did I look at sheet music, and also slowing down videos helps as well). This turned out really long and I'm so sorry for rambling but basically I say go for it!

Hey there, Rob! I'm from Ukraine, and we have an awesome national instrument called 'bandura'. I guess you should try it out sometime, it would be a cool addition to your collection. It's got around 60 strings and sounds absolutely gorgeous, I'd bet all my own instruments you'll totally love it.

So true.
Learn to play on whatever you have. Become a master on whatever you have. Then when you get something better, you'll make what's better sound EVEN BETTER because it's being played by a master of the art.
I've been trying to drill this into my son's head here lately. Even though he doesn't remember the THOUSANDS of dollars in gear that I had to sell to keep us afloat during the 2008 recession, he sees the expensive bass and vintage acoustic I have now and thinks he needs expensive things to sound good and that's simply not true.
I started on pawn shop instruments...and not very good ones.

When I was younger I wanted to make a youtube channel kind of like this one, but for brass instruments. It's been a few years now. I've recently bought and started playing a new instrument again. A ukulele. I feel like I'm falling in love with music all over again. Then I find this channel, and it's great. I ask my mom if I can have her old guitar, and I ask my sister for her keyboard. They aren't using them so they say yes. I'm learning with books and I'm practicing about an hour a day on uke and maybe 15 minutes each with the other two.

A part of me wants to get out my trumpet and start practicing again.

Idk if I'll ever start that youtube channel, but I'm glad that the music found me again. For now I'm content to sit alone in my room and jam out while I learn the ropes. Er.... strings.

As for the ethics of exploiting animals for human consumption, I would just suggest that you ask yourself if your moral system is philosophically well-defined (do you have a consistent way of telling if an action is right or wrong), and why you think that the well-being of animals should not be considered in questions of morality. My system, for example, is some form of utilitarianism, or maximizing the amount of well-being in the world. Since it is well-documented that animals suffer, exploiting them decreases their well-being and thus any action which unnecessarily imposes suffering on animals should be considered immoral.

You don't have to respond but that's just my perspective on this issue.

@Vladimir Pootis Some of them still exist yeah but there's law to protect those endangered species that require Erhus to have a certificate from the State Forestry Administration that certify that it wasn't made with wild pythons but from farm-raised pythons.
You may be mad at using animal skin but it exist on way more thing than instrument.
I wouldn't call is inhumane to use animal product since it's what human did since they exist on earth.

@NoobieLandCity The vast majority of Erhu manufacturers still use traditional python skin. Just because they have synthetic options available doesn't mean that those have replaced the traditional materials in popularity. Professional players do not like synthetic skins because of the difference in sound quality, so most orchestras still use the inhumane option.

@Vladimir Pootis Ok so I've google this and those instrument weren't made from wild python but those being in a farm since 1988 to 2005 also The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra found an alternative to python skin which substitutes python skin with Polyester Membrane since 2005, they also received the Ministry of Culture Innovation Award in 2012 for this.
So yeah it's not made like it used too, you can blame the past for this but the one he got probably made from Polyester Membrane and not python skin.

That is an awesome collection. There are obviously some quality instruments in there, however it is nice to see someone using instruments from all ends of the pricing spectrum. It just goes to show that you do not need the most expensive instruments to make quality music.

Love all the guitars man. I started playing years ago when I went in the service and eventually saved up enough money and got lucky enough to find a pre lawsuit ESP explorer and loved that thing with all my heart. Sadly it got destroyed a couple weeks ago when my house burned down. Now it’s time to rebuild again. I doubt I’ll ever find another guitar like that one. It was so special to me. I started binging Rob Scallon when he did Metallica covers on the banjo. I like the sound of the banjo but I really don't like the music people have traditionally been making with that instrument so it was a wonderful thing for me to hear metal music on the banjo, it was so awesome!!!! I uhhh... theres this old harmonica that I found in a bin of legos at my house... It was a bit musty and I decided not to clean it off before using it, so if not a rare instrument at least I got a rare disease.

I’m hoping to find something cool at an antique shop, 2nd hand at a music store or something one day, but honestly if I do I’ll probably be in a different state, I love where I live but living here makes traveling especially appealing.

Awesome collection. Mine is not nearly as expansive, but I'm getting there... FWIW, my favorite videos are the ones that talk about older or less common instruments. Stuff like baroque guitars, hurdy gurdy, koto, theorbo, and so on. Would love to see you try out an arpeggione or a guitarviol.

My very first guitar was a Samick Greg Bennett series Dreadnought in wine red. Gifted to me as a birthday present from my godmother for my 10th birthday. I'm sure it's just nostalgia, but it'll always be my favorite guitar. I'll put my Taylor and Martin back in their cases all the time just to play my "cheap" guitar. 😆
