The rose

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
And you it's only seed
It's the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dyin'
That never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been to long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose
The song "The Rose" by Bette Midler was released in 1979 and remains one of her most iconic and popular hits. The song is a powerful and emotional ballad that speaks to the complexities of love and the human experience. The first stanza sets the tone for the song by exploring various perspectives on love. The lyrics "Some say love, it is a river / That drowns the tender reed / Some say love, it is a razor / That leaves your soul to bleed / Some say love, it is a hunger / An endless aching need / I say love, it is a flower / And you it's only seed" suggest that love can be both beautiful and painful, depending on one's perspective.
The second stanza shifts its focus to the reasons why some people don't fully experience love or take risks in love. The lyrics "It's the heart afraid of breaking / That never learns to dance / It's the dream afraid of waking / That never takes the chance / It's the one who won't be taken / Who cannot seem to give / And the soul afraid of dyin' / That never learns to live" suggests that fear can prevent us from truly experiencing the power and beauty of love.
The final stanza offers a message of hope and perseverance, encouraging listeners to remember that the seed of love is always present, even in the most difficult and dark times. The lyrics "When the night has been too lonely / And the road has been too long / And you think that love is only / For the lucky and the strong / Just remember in the winter / Far beneath the bitter snows / Lies the seed that with the sun's love / In the spring becomes the rose" suggests that love is everlasting and will always find a way to bloom, even in the darkest of times. This message of hope and perseverance has resonated with listeners for decades, making "The Rose" a true classic.
