drivers license
jxdn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got my driver's license last week
Just like we always talked about
'Cause you were so excited for me
To finally drive up to your house
But today I drove through the suburbs
Crying 'cause you weren't around

And you're probably with that blonde girl
Who always made me doubt
She's so much older than me
She's everything I'm insecure about, yeah
Today I drove through the suburbs
'Cause how could I ever love someone else?

'Cause I know we weren't perfect
But I've never felt this way for no one
And I just can't imagine
How you could be so okay now that I'm gone
Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me
'Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street

And all my friends are tired
Of hearing how much I miss you, but
I kinda feel sorry for them
'Cause they'll never know you the way that I do, yeah
Today I drove through the suburbs
And pictured I was driving home to you

'Cause I know we weren't perfect
But I've never felt this way for no one
And I just can't imagine
How you could be so okay now that I'm gone
Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me
'Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street

Red lights, stop signs
I still see your face in the white cars, front yards
Can't drive past the places we used to go to
'Cause I still fuckin' love you, babe, babe
Sidewalks we crossed
I still hear your voice in the traffic, we're laughing
Over all the noise
God, I'm so blue, know we're through
But I still fuckin' love you, babe, babe (babe)

I know we weren't perfect
But I've never felt this way for no one
And I just can't imagine
How you could be so okay now that I'm gone
Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me
'Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street

'Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street

Overall Meaning

The song "Drivers License" by jxdn is about a heartbroken girl who recently got her driver's license, but instead of feeling the freedom of the open road, she is driving around her ex-boyfriend's neighborhood, reminiscing about their past relationship. She is crying because he is not there with her, and she feels insecure about the fact that he may be with another girl who used to make her doubt herself. She cannot understand how he could be so okay with their breakup while she is still in love with him.

Throughout the song, the girl is torn between her lingering feelings for her ex and the reality that their relationship is over. She cannot help but think about all the places they used to go together and the memories they shared. She is still in love with him, despite the fact that all her friends are tired of hearing about it.

The chorus repeats the theme of the song with the girl admitting that they weren't perfect but she has never felt this way for anyone else, and she can't imagine how he could be so okay with their breakup. She questions his sincerity in their relationship, wondering if he meant it when he sang about forever. The girl concludes the song by admitting that she still drives past his street, even though it hurts, because deep down she still loves him.
