Helpless
k.d.lang Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There is a town in north Ontario
With dream comfort memory to spare
And in my mind
I still need a place to go
All my changes were there

Blue, blue window behind the stars
Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
Throwing shadows in our eyes
Leave us

Helpless, helpless, helpless
Helpless, helpless, helpless

Baby, can you hear me now?
The chains are locked
And tied around my door
And baby will you sing with me somehow

Helpless, helpless, helpless
Helpless, helpless, helpless
Helpless, helpless, helpless
Helpless, helpless

Blue, blue windows behind the stars
Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
Throwing shadows in our eyes
Leave us

Helpless, helpless, helpless
Helpless, helpless, helpless
Helpless, helpless

Helpless, helpless, helpless
Helpless, helpless, helpless

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of k.d.lang's song Helpless tells a story of a person reminiscing about a town in northern Ontario that has brought them comfort and memories. The town seems to be a nostalgic getaway for the person, as they can still picture it in their mind, and all their "changes" were there. The lyrics mention colors such as "Blue, blue windows behind the stars" and "Yellow moon on the rise," which contribute to the song's dreamy and nostalgic tone. However, this dreaminess is interrupted by the mention of "big birds flying across the sky" and "Throwing shadows in our eyes," which may be interpreted as a metaphor for challenges or obstacles in life. The lyrics conclude with a plea for help and comfort, as the person feels trapped and "helpless."

One possible interpretation of the meaning behind the song could be that it is about the importance of having a safe and familiar haven to return to during difficult times. The town in northern Ontario serves as a place of solace and refuge for the person, where they can escape from the struggles of everyday life. However, the song also acknowledges that even in such a place, challenges and obstacles can arise, making the person feel trapped and helpless. The chorus, with its repetition of the word "helpless," seems to represent a cry for assistance and support from someone who is feeling lost and alone.

This is my favorite version of this classic song. It sends chills up and down my spine literally. So grateful and proud to have these two great artists as Canadians, eh.

I don't say thisΒ lightly, but I truly believe that K.D. Lang is the next link in the chain of the greatest singers of the 20th century.Β  She is carrying on the tradition of total credibility when she sings every song and the ability to transcend musical genres that was established and moved forward by singers like Patsy Cline, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and George Jones.Β  Lang has that natural ability (it cannot be learned or taught) to make you believe every word and touch your soul with the musicality of how she sings the lyrics.Β  She was gifted not only with an amazing voice, but also with the ability to use it to its maximum effectiveness, and that is very, very rare.Β

In short, K.D. Lang could start on page 1 of the phone book and sing every name with such feeling it would move me; AND she would have me believing she personally knew every person whose name she sang.

Legendary, iconic, natural, authentic, hypnotizing, almost haunting at times. All she has to do is be herself. She never seems to be trying to compete. She is just a gift.
