Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lady Gaga's "Dope" express a deep desperation for a lost love. The song starts with Gaga acknowledging that she has made mistakes and has lost her only friend. She is asking for forgiveness for her sins and pleading for her love not to leave her. She then sings about how much she needs this person, more than any drug (hence the title of the song). I actually think this is my favorite album. It doesn't have my favorite lady gaga songs (marry the night and more) but overall the entire album is great. The best way to explain it is it can listen to every song in this album and jam while her previous albums had fewer great songs. People now just care for the singles.

People: the meaning of the cover is simple. The teeth and injuries reflect the harm that drugs (or whatever) left on her, a permanent reminder of her sins. The hood that covers her eyes means she's ashamed of doing what she did. She uses her raw voice because she s displaying herself as a simple human who makes mistakes. I've recently become a Gaga fan, or a Lil' Monster and I have to say that even though it was Gypsy and Dope (and several other Artpop songs) that made me a die hard fan of hers, I went back and listened to all her other music and I am so ashamed that I didn't see how absolutely BRILLIANT this woman is!! She is so remarkable. Her talent exceeds anything I've heard in years. I went out and bought all her albums and I am now proudly a certified FANATIC and spreading the word to everyone I know about how amazing she is! LOVE YOU LADY Gaga!

Just the same for me, just that I got to listen to several of her songs in the summer, and then it started. I was thinking: Wow, 2011 the last time she came out with new music, too bad, she's amazing! I had no idea Applause were to come out a month later :D hahah!!

the fact that this song is placed after mary jane holland (a song about weed and her alter ego) in the tracklist hits harder. i feel like dope is about gaga regretting of using too much drugs that it really affect her life, health, and her friends. what a powerful song and this shows how gaga has been through a lot during this era and she had to marry the darkness on her side.

This song is just beautiful, I've been listening to it again lately. This is an apology for letting your problems, such as addictions, push the people you love away. I just walked down that path and it hurts like hell. I let my fear of abandonment, my self-hatred and my mood swing, pretty much like a BPD, hurt the person I love the most. And when I saw him withdraw from me, I couldn't help beating myself up... It hurts so much, like your soul is decaying... I've sent him several sorry letters but still no replies yet... So I decided to work on myself and wait for the best outcome. I pray to God everyday. And thank you, Gaga, for this beautiful song.

I love gaga so much. Even if you don't like her music, just appreciate what she's done for society - she's broken boundaries and expectations, and also was a huge contributor to the repeal of DADT. She's beautiful and I'll always be her little monster <3

I absolutely love this song, the lyrics are one thing but the quality of singing and her voice is simply phenomenal! :D xx She can do chart-topping pop but also monumental and memorable songs.
