One detail no one has mention yet. When the main theme starts playing the instrument playing is a mandolin, that mandolin is been played by the creator of The Legend of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto himself.

I always found Wind Waker really interesting, beyond just being my introduction to the series. It has this really upbeat and colorful world and characters, but the intro and backstory is surprisingly one of the darkest in the series with how it relates to Ocarina of Time. How the Hero of Time saved the world but then wasn’t able to return, and this centuries later nobody knew their hero was effectively gone forever and had to learn this when he didn’t return to save them. Then you get to Hyrule Castle later and learn that the Gods of Hyrule basically flooded the kingdom and just kinda left, abandoning the people of Hyrule to a flooded world where they live on tiny disconnected islands.

It was a really interesting aspect of the game that worked really well when juxtaposed against the main bulk of the game being more cheerful than the past two titles. Great game overall, definitely one of my favorites.

i loved watching this whole sequence and story as a kid, but since i was about 6 and lacked a consciousness it didn't click for me that it was telling the story of ocarina of time in the adult timeline

This theme was amazing recaping all of ocarina of time. I got that the second of aeeing the intro and seeing the events in hyrule castle in the sea. But i then started seeing the realty of this game's canon. This is Ocarina of time TWO. this is the FUTURE you as the hero of time Fought Steadfastly for. And your userper stands on its REMAINS.

As i played again the game with this in mind and seeing that part of the intro, "the hero did not appear"...i wept. Like a boy.

Hero of Legend has gone through like 3 different adventures. A link to the past, Links Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages. There is no other Link that went through 3 whole games/adventures as far as I know.

OoT Link's story is the most tragic and horrid. Leaves the timeline he "grew up" in because of some misguided kindness by Zelda to "give back" his childhood, which doomed an entire timeline-- the one that remembered his heroism, and one he was forever locked out of after OoT... which allowed Ganondorf to return and take the lands without resistance.

Then OoT Link arrives in the Child Timeline, and none of his exploits are remembered-- because they never occurred in this world. Not even this world's Zelda knows what he did for the one in the other timeline.
He just can't win.

Then, he dies... an elite knight of Hyrule, but not the hero of legend that we know him as. He has so much regret-- especially that he never passed on his skills to his children-- but he eventually does redeem himself, and it is through his teachings that his descendant uses his secret technique to end the King of Evil.
