Let It Rock W/ Kevin Rudolf
lil wayne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see your dirty face, high behind your collar
What is done in vain, truth is hard to swallow
So you pray to God
To justify the way you live a lie, live a lie, live a lie
And you take your time and you do your crime
Well you made your bed, I'm in mine

[Chorus]
Because when I arrive
I bring the fire, make you come alive
I can take you higher what this is, forgot?
I must now remind you let it rock, let it rock, let it rock

Now the son's disgraced
He, who knew his father
When he cursed his name
Turned, and chased the dollar
But it broke his heart
So he stuck his middle finger
To the world, to the world to the world
And you take your time and you stand in line
Well you'll get what's yours, I got mine

[Chorus]

Yeah! Wayne's world
Planet Rock, panties drop
And the tops and she gonna rock 'til the camera stop
And I sing about angels like Angela (rock) and Pamela (rock)
And Samantha (rock) and Amanda and Tamara
I'm in here up like bitch what's up
Mechanic, me, I can fix you up
I can fuck you up, I can fuck you down
Shorty we can go wherever just pick a town
And the jewelry is louder than an engine sound
Big ass rocks like on the ground
Dirty like socks that's on the ground, Weezy

[Chorus: x2]

Just let it rock
Let it rock, let it rock, let it rock, let it rock

I'm back like I forgot something, I'm something
Rollin' Rock rubbing rap running
Miles like I'm trying to get a flat stomach
Like Wayne the personal trainer
My aim is perfect I'll fuck ya, period, like the reminder

I wish I could be, as cruel as you

And I wish I could say, the things you do
But I can't and I won't live a lie, no not this time

Overall Meaning

In Lil Wayne's song "Let It Rock," the lyrics tell the story of two individuals, both living a lie and looking for justification in their actions. The first verse is clearly directed toward someone who is living a double life and trying to justify their actions through prayer. The lines "What is done in vain, truth is hard to swallow," suggest the singer knows this individual is trying to justify something that is not justified. The chorus then comes in with a shift in perspective to the singer, who is arriving to bring fire and take things to a higher level. The lines "I can take you higher what this is, forgot? I must now remind you let it rock," indicate that the singer is challenging the person from the first verse to let go of their lies and embrace the truth.

In the second verse, there is a shift to a new character, the son who is disgraced by his father. The lines "He, who knew his father when he cursed his name turned, and chased the dollar," suggest that the son is disappointed in his father for chasing material possessions rather than staying true to himself. The chorus then comes back in, with Lil Wayne rapping about a world where "panties drop" and he sings about different women. The final bridge is a combination of Wayne and Rudolf rapping and singing together, with Wayne saying he could be as cruel as the person in the first verse, but he chooses not to live a lie.

A Sensory Superpower

As it turns out, getting chills from music is not as common as you might think. Researchers from USC released a study that suggests that only about 50 percent of people feel things like shivers, a lump in their throat, and goosebumps when they listen to music. What's more, those people might have very different brains than those who don't experience those feelings.

First, they gathered 20 people and had them listen to a selection of their favorite songs. Whenever they felt a chill, they pressed a button. All 20 were then given MRI scans — and the 10 that reported reactions were obvious standouts. Their brains turned out to have a much higher volume of fibers connecting their auditory cortex to the areas that process emotion.

More fibers mean that those two areas of the brain can communicate much more effectively. It also means that, because their emotional processing centers are beefier, those people are more able to experience extreme emotions.

A Feeling of Frisson

This study might shed a light on the causes of the phenomenon, but it's been well documented for years. Actually, it even has a name. The phenomenon of chills or goosebumps that come from a piece of music (or from any other aesthetic experience) is called frisson, and it's been one of the big mysteries of human nature since it was first described.

That's because even if we know the actual mechanism that causes frisson — a close connection to the emotional processing center — we don't know what purpose it could serve us. But other studies have suggested some potential benefits of this kind of behavior.

One report from 2007 found that individuals who experience frisson are more open to new experiences than others, and other studies described higher levels of creativity and intellectual curiosity. In other words, the appreciation of beauty is central to what makes us human, and frisson is just a super-charged version of that appreciation.
