American Dream
m.c. love Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I was dreaming in my sleep
Saw through you all
And I was dreaming still on my feet
Saw through you all

And I saw what you could be
And you just don't feel free
And I saw what you could be
But you just won't be real to me

So let's blame this excess
On an American dream
So let's blame the success
Of an American dream

Are you confused by the chaos
In everyones wandering eyes
Do you dream of running naked
In warm rain
Are you confused by the chaos
It's no, it's no surprise
We all stand next to Jesus
Close to Satan we're both the same

These birds can't fly away away
These birds can't fly away

So let's blame this excess
On an American dream
So let's blame the success
Of an American dream (x4)

Feeling so high and low
It's the American dream (x4)

Overall Meaning

In the song "American Dream" by M.C. Love, the lyrics suggest that the American dream is something that people are chasing, but it's not real. The first verse talks about how the singer saw through everyone while dreaming, both while sleeping and while awake. They saw what people could be, but they don't feel free to be themselves, and they won't be real to the singer. The chorus suggests that the excess and the success that people blame on the American dream are not the real thing, just a dream that everyone is trying to achieve. The second verse talks about how everyone is confused by the chaos in the world, and how people have dreams that they can't achieve. The line "We all stand next to Jesus, close to Satan we're both the same" suggests that everyone has goodness and evil in them, and the American dream might be the reason why people can't tell the difference anymore.

The lyrics of "American Dream" are open to interpretation, but it can be seen as a commentary on how people chase the American dream without really understanding what it is. It can be interpreted as a criticism of the capitalist system, where the pursuit of wealth and success is seen as the ultimate goal. The song is a reminder that the American dream, as it has been marketed, is not attainable for everyone and is not necessarily the key to happiness or success. The chorus "Feeling so high and low, it's the American dream" suggests that people feel both highs and lows while chasing this ideal, and it's a constant struggle.

We broke down, trying to leave town
Flying down the road to change
We were born to run
Cali, here we come
Escape from Nowhere, USA

Say goodbye to white picket fences (bye)
Say hello to palm trees and Benzes
They say you got to fall to have it all
Now, we don't want two kids and a wife
I don't want a job, I just want a life
Sometimes the underdogs rise
And the mighty fall (And the mighty will fall!)...

This ain't the same summer song that you used to know
'Cause Jack left Diane thirty years ago
The world is spinning too fast for you and me
So, tell me, whatever happened to the American Dream?

I know a girl, I met her last night
She was fresh off the plane
She whispered in my ear
"Baby, come here, I'll do anything to make a name"

Honey, take my hand, follow me, 'cause
I don't want to hurt you, but he does
I just want to give you some real advice (listen, baby)
Never take candy from a stranger
And keep your eyes open for danger
'Cause this right here is a twisted paradise

This ain't the same summer song that you used to know
'Cause Jack left Diane thirty years ago
The world is spinning too fast for you and me
So, tell me, whatever happened to the American Dream?

This ain't the same summer song that you used to know
So, baby, let's live and die before we're getting old
You know that nothing is the way it used to be
So, tell me, whatever happened to the American Dream?

Na na na, na na na na, na na na na na na
Na na na, na na na na, na na na na na na
Na na na, na na na na, na na na na na na

We were born to run
Cali, here we come
We gettin' out of here, baby...
Let's get out of here (oh whoa)

This ain't the same summer song that you used to know
'Cause Jack left Diane thirty years ago
The world is spinning too fast for you and me
So, tell me, whatever happened to the American Dream?
This ain't the same summer song that you used to know
So baby, let's live and die before we're getting old
You know that nothing is the way it used to be
So, tell me, whatever happened to the American Dream?

Na na na, na na na na, na na na na na na
Na na na, na na na na, na na na na na na, oh...

I really do have so much nostalgia for this track, especially from hearing it being played on The Thundermans back in 2014 and its crazy to think that this incredible track is almost an entire decade old! It still is such an amazing track after all those years
